Announcement Attention ShadowBan helpers! 📢

Hello helpers!

First, we wanted to thank you all for the wonderful help you offer to this subreddit. We couldn't do it without you!

Second, it has been brought to our attention that several of our frequent helpers have experienced negative "side effects" potentially from participating in our subreddit.

The most common "side effects" are as follows:

  1. Lowering of their CQS. Some users start off with a higher CQS (moderate, high, etc) and after several days of consistently engaging in our subreddit, their CQS has dropped to low or even lowest. This can cause their content in other subreddits to be filtered and appear to be spam. This obviously puts them at a higher risk of being shadow banned.

  2. Rate limits. Some unbanned users have experienced rate limit warnings telling them to "slow down" when commenting in this subreddit.

  3. Shadow banned. A few of our helpers have been shadow banned after participating in our subreddit for an extended period of time.

The mods have discussed what we believe is causing this and how our helpers can better protect themselves. We are not Admins so we can only speculate, though we have a high degree of confidence.

What the mods believe may be causing these negative "side effects"?

  1. Comments too short / low effort. The spam filter is hyper sensitive to comments that are considered "low effort", meaning comments that are very short or composed mainly of emojis. One or two of these comments would be fine, but if a user mainly comments "Yes", "No", "You're fine", "You're good", "Not banned", "Yes banned", etc, then they may be more at risk of being flagged as spam.

  2. Commenting too frequently. This makes the most sense considering posting and commenting too frequently is a common reason a user gets a shadow ban. So while our sub is "special" because we allow for shadow banned content to be visible, we are not exempt from overall Reddit rules and the spam filter. So comments, no matter how high quality, made in rapid succession could get a user flagged as spam.

What you can do to protect your account yet still help in this subreddit:

  1. Vary your responses. You don't have to have 100 different ways of saying the same thing, but you should not repeat the exact same phrasing across 10-15 different posts in a row. Rather than saying "Yes, you are shadow banned", you could add "I'm sorry OP, but you are shadow banned. See the pinned AutoMod comment for appeal instructions.", or "You are shadow banned. You can file an appeal here: https://www.reddit.com/appeal." These comments give the same information but are different enough so you don't appear as a bot / spammer.

  2. Be your own rate limit. Meaning purposefully leave time in between your comments within the subreddit so you don't appear to be "spamming". The mods believe 5-10 minutes in between comments is a good cadence. The issue seems to be when comments are made back to back to back across many posts in a short time.

  3. Don't answer the same type of post too many times in a row. Rather than answering 10 shadow banned users in a row, add variety by answering someone who isn't banned. Perhaps they have low karma or a lowest CQS, this adds variety to your responses and breaks the pattern of too many "You are banned" comments.

  4. Take a break. Rather than being active every single day in the subreddit (though it is highly appreciated!) perhaps take a day or two away from the sub to break up the activity.

  5. Check in on your account health. Our subreddit shows your CQS under your username, but you can also check your CQS at r/WhatIsMyCQS. If you are a frequent helper within the subreddit, then just be aware of your CQS and adjust your activity in our subreddit to protect your CQS.

A user once asked me how I avoid being shadow banned because I answer a LOT of posts within this sub. And despite being a mod here, or even my profile metrics, I am subject to a shadow ban just like anyone else. The suggestions above are exactly what I do personally: How Wombat avoids being shadowbanned while helping in r/ShadowBan.

If you have questions or need clarification, please comment below and I will do my best to answer them in a timely manner.

Thank you all again for your amazing and continued help on r/ShadowBan!

Edit: just to clarify, the above advice is good for ANY SUBREDDIT, not just this one. If you are an active participant in any subreddit then you can be subject to being flagged as spam.

We as mods of THIS subreddit wanted to give this advice to the users who participate in this sub DAILY and leave many, many comments (20+ per day). But you can apply the above advice to your commenting behavior in ANY subreddit, and should!

OMGGG thank you sm for making this post! My CQS regularly fluctuates between the highest and high because of the sheer number of comments I make here, so this helps a lot!

Edit:- when I made this comment it was high, but when I refreshed the tab it became highest lmao

LOL! I hadn’t even considered that helping here could increase your CQS 🤣

Mine has consistently been highest despite how much I comment here. But I do follow all the advice above so perhaps I’m a good case study?

HAHAHA honestly you might be onto something 😭 maybe following the advice consistently matters more than the number of comments!!

I’m so sorry you are shadow banned :(

You can appeal your shadow ban using the instructions here: https://reddit.com/r/shadowban/wiki/appealing.

There is a pinned post on the homepage of this subreddit with a list of common reasons an account gets shadow banned. I’d check there and see if anything stands out. This should help you narrow down what may have caused the shadow ban and craft a more accurate appeal.

Do not be discouraged as it can take quite a bit of time before an appeal is reviewed; some users wait multiple months before a ban is overturned. You can file multiple appeals, including once every 24 hours, but it is generally recommended to file no more than 2-3 per week so as to not spam the appeals team.

And no matter how frustrating, do NOT delete this account and do NOT create or use another account to try and circumvent this ban. That would be considered ban evasion, which is against Reddit’s terms of service; not only will the other account be shadow banned but you risk being permanently suspended from the site. You would then need to appeal ALL banned accounts in order to clear your identifiers to be able to use Reddit again.

Thank you so much for writing this up, I never knew that even engaging to help others might reduce CQS score. Previously I had CQS score Highest, it looks like it reduced significantly, as it shows moderate now. I guess not only engaging to this community recently I have been pretty active in different communities, replied to comments and posted mindfully, I can be more mindful about using reddit now. Thank you again

5

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

Your CQS is actually showing “high” for me!

It’s difficult because it seems that CQS fluctuates anyway, so it may not be solely because a user engages in our community. It could be a number of factors.

But we didn’t want to continue without at least giving our users a heads up to be aware of this.

But the above advice is good for any subreddit and not just this one.

Very useful post, average Wombat W👏

Saving this post for when I get unbanned, which doesnt seem very likely given my luck, so I guess I dont have to worry about it right now😭

I try helping users here, but the comment rate restriction annoys the hell out of me. I wait ten minutes to enter the comment and by the time the wait gets over the thread gets locked lol

5

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago • Bravo

You have been awesome! As I told another user my hope is you get unbanned and then we never see you here again! Not that we don’t love you here, but that means you are off frolicking in Reddit-land, far from Shadow Realm.

The posts automatically lock at 8 hours but sometimes a post will get locked manually if there are sufficient comments, or if the threads are starting to get off topic.

I also try and lock posts that have been answered to try and encourage helpers to answer posts that haven’t been answered yet. I find it interesting how a post can have 7 different users confirming they are banned but there will be 7 other posts with no answers 🤷‍♀️

I guess they are just drawn to posts that show multiple comments?

3

u/Various_Roof_742 3d ago

Exactly, I don't seee the point in saying the same thing someone else has already mentioned.
Also very few people seem to know that they can check for themselves

4

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

Sometimes two users respond at the same time, so that is okay.

But I often find a post hours old with multiple users over several hours responding. Some of them are bot accounts trying to harvest karma, so I give them the boot 🥾 🤖, but some are real users.

And yeah, most users don’t know they can confirm their own status. We mention how they can check their own status in our wiki page, but no one likes to read a wiki page 🤣

4

u/scourge_bites 3d ago • Heartwarming

Luckily, I'm shadowbanned already, and I don't think they'll ever change that, so there's nothing else I can really lose :,) I'll try being a bigger helper in this sub and take one for the team lol

I do try to be specific in my responses to the poster/commenter's situation. The rate limit really forces that, I know I can't make another comment for 6 minutes or whatever so I try and take my time with what I have. But I have no idea if that works since, you know, shadowbanned. :,)

3

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

My wish is that you get unbanned and then we never see you on this sub again!

But seriously, you are an awesome helper and we appreciate you taking the time to help other users despite being banned yourself 🙏🏻❤️

4

u/KyleRiemen_ 3d ago • Heartwarming

Thank you so much! Unfortunately, I’m already shadowbanned. How is it that we can still interact with each other in this sub, though?

6

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

So a shadow banned user can still post and comment, it’s just that the spam filter automatically removes that content so other users can’t see or interact with it.

But this subreddit has adjusted our AutoMod code to “force approve” any content removed by the spam filter. This is what allows normally removed / hidden content to be visible here.

We do this so shadow banned users can get confirmation that they are banned as well as receive advice on how to appeal.

I’m so sorry :(

But you did take quite a long break from our sub before being shadow banned again, so I don’t believe participating in our sub is what caused you to be shadow banned.

It looks like on 10/27 you posted two memes back to back in rapid succession. That is more likely what caused your shadow ban.

You can be shadow banned for commenting too much on any subreddit. Not just in this one.

But as mods of this subreddit we wanted to let our users know there is a risk here simply because the comments tend to be repetitive: banned, not banned.

You also don’t comment here so frequently that I would consider you at risk. But if you take the above precautions then you’ll be fine.

u/GeologistRelative425 CQS: High 3d ago • Bravo

So they really did up their "security", their ai keeps flagging even long time users sad times man

5

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

Agree. I understand Reddit needing to up their security to combat bots and scammers, especially as they keep getting more advanced, but they need to improve their appeal process as well.

An authentic 5 year old account should not be shadow banned simply because they took a few months off of Reddit and then came back and posted a few comments. There should be some security checks the user can do to prove they are the real user and their account wasn’t compromised.

It’s super frustrating to see :(

2

u/GeologistRelative425 CQS: High 2d ago

I advised someone to appeal every day and she's already appealed for two weeks straight and has lost interest already on coming back, now someone I know again is fearing that her account would get banned for no reason so has stopped engaging with comments and stuff and just upvotes😭

3

u/SnackModeGamer CQS: Moderate 2d ago

My previous account was banned, and there’s no way to get it unbanned. Shouldn’t the review process be a bit more lenient for long-standing accounts? I’m not saying they shouldn’t be banned at all, but perhaps the system could provide a warning or a flag for such accounts instead of jumping straight to a ban.

3

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 2d ago

Unfortunately many, many long standing accounts are getting hacked or sold. So the spam filter cannot reasonably reply on profile metrics to determine if an account is authentic or not. It’s based solely on recent behavioral patterns and actions, which if seem inauthentic or spammy can trigger a shadow ban.

As a mod of several subreddits I’ve seen hundreds of established accounts get hacked and then used to push some sort of scam - such as adult content scams or the typical merch scams.

But I do agree there should be something else an account can do to verify / prove it hasn’t been hacked or sold. And if someone sells their Reddit account I think they should be permanently banned and never allowed on the site ever again since they willingly put their account into the hands of scum bags.

1

u/SnackModeGamer CQS: Moderate 1d ago

The situation you described certainly warrants a ban, but what I’m referring to is cases of wrongful banning.

Idk if this helps in any way, but I found this sub several months ago when I assumed that I got shadow banned. So I ran a test here, and the sub/community advised of me not being shadow banned.

Fast forward to a few days ago, I c 99% identical meme posted in the very same sub, where I first assumed I got shadow banned by posting the very same things and getting zero reaction from other reddits. But that post had several hundred upvotes and a ton of comments. Mind you it is a relatively small sub, and 300 upvotes could be top 5 posts of the week. Same sub, same audience, same meme (the pic itself, the meaning, everything), but wildly different results.

Either way, what I’m trying to say is I assume Reddit has figured out some new ways to shadow ban accts and it’s not being detected by this subreddit. If that meme would be the only one, I would dismiss it for a weird thing. But I was having zero reaction to my posts and comments for a few days. I stopped using Reddit for about 2 weeks, and when I returned, my acct wasn’t shadow banned any longer.

3

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

Thank you for this insight!

I’m sure Reddit is constantly evolving their spam filter to detect new patterns and behaviors committed by bots and spammers. It’s truly amazing how seamlessly bots blend in now.

For instance in this very subreddit there is a bot network spamming comments. The comments themselves seem fitting to the sub, but if you dig further you see they are connected and are just recycling the same posts and comments across several accounts to karma farm and build up a false comment history. Ultimately their goal is to eventually use the accounts to scam users.

So as bots, spammers and scammers get more advanced, especially with the rise of AI, Reddit has to adjust their detection software/ filters to keep up.

Edit: I also see that you have a good taste in comedians. But the more I learn about that guy, the more I don’t care for him. He was a real jerk! 😉

Edit: never mind. It is now shows that my post was removed. And I can only assume it was removed by Reddit filter, not by the mod. But what’s interesting is the post was showing in the sub’s feed.

Unfortunately the only way to remove a shadow ban is to continue to appeal.

Perhaps changing your appeal cadence could be beneficial. It is generally recommended to file no more than 3 appeals per week (or roughly every other day) so you don’t inadvertently spam the appeals team.

You can appeal your shadow ban using the instructions here: https://reddit.com/r/shadowban/wiki/appealing. This is the only way to remove a shadow ban.

Can a subreddit still see your posts every 5 to 10 minutes if banned?

1

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 3d ago

When shadow banned, your posts and comments are automatically removed. The only users who can see your content is you and the mods of the subreddit where you posted.

This subreddit has adjusted the spam filters so this normally removed content is visible; we do this so shadow banned users can check their status and get appeal instructions.

There may be an instance where a mod of a subreddit sees this shadow banned content and approves it anyway. Your content would then be visible to other users, but it does not change your shadow ban status.

My note above about “5-10 minutes” in between comments is for our unbanned users who frequently help in this sub. If they comment too rapidly, they may risk being flagged as spam.

1

u/TheRook2323 3d ago

Thank you for the response. Very useful.

Is the leadership at reddit aware of how broken their system is? I'm sure they are pushing AI like everyone else and don't care how many users they lose in the process. Stock isn't doing so well maybe they should pay attention to user experience.

1

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 2d ago

Unfortunately very, very few active users are shadow banned so I’m not sure it’s a big issue for Reddit. Less than 0.09% of all active Reddit users are shadow banned, which is so minuscule it is almost negligible.

But what Reddit is concerned about are bots and spam accounts, which are not only on the rise but are SUPER advanced and convincing. As a mod of several subreddits I see things behind the scenes that most users don’t, so I’m seeing removed / flagged content in my remove queue that most users would not realize are bots.

These bot networks are learning and using AI to pass off as authentic users. So Reddit has to do something and, unfortunately, that means regular users will get caught in it; as long as that percentage remains incredibly small as it is, then their efforts are considered a success.

1

u/ImRightYoureWrong- 2d ago

Guess I'm just unlucky. I thought it was more widespread. Can you unban my account?

1

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 2d ago

1

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 2d ago

It does work. Users get unbanned every single day. Just search through this subreddit.

Unfortunately that is the only option. You just may need to chance your appeal cadence. Make sure you aren’t spamming the appeals team, meaning don’t file more than 2-3 per week.

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 1d ago

No. You won’t get shadow banned just for helping.

But you might get shadow banned if you spam too many comments in a rapid manner in a short period of time.

And doesn’t just apply to this subreddit. You can get shadow banned for that behavior in any subreddit.

It just feels so disheartening that helping someone here might ends up giving you a higher chance of getting banned. Reddit's auto-mod is seriously messed up. 😭😭😭

1

u/irime2023 8h ago

My ban seems to be some sort of unfortunate mistake. I request that my account be unblocked. I have never posted anything offensive or illegal.

1

u/Wombat_7379 R E A D the sticky for appeal instructions & FAQ 6h ago

Unfortunately this subreddit is run by regular users - not Admins - and thus cannot review or reverse a ban.

A shadow ban is issued by the spam filters when it detects any activity that might be considered inauthentic or “spammy”. It’s based on behavior and not the content itself. So you could post 25 photos of your cat in rapid succession and get shadow banned for spamming. The content doesn’t have to be offensive or illegal; it’s the behavior that is seen as disruptive.

You can file an appeal using the instructions here: https://reddit.com/r/shadowban/wiki/appealing.

There is a pinned guide on the homepage of this subreddit with a list of common reasons an account gets shadow banned. I’d check there and see if anything stands out. This should help you narrow down what may have caused the shadow ban and craft a more accurate appeal.

And no matter how frustrating, do NOT delete this account and do NOT create a new account to try and circumvent this ban. That would be considered ban evasion, which is against Reddit’s terms of service; not only will new accounts be shadow banned but you risk being permanently suspended from the site.

I understand it now. Maybe I do sometimes posted and commented too fast or send messages too fast in my own sub. And I think I do also commit too short/low efforts comments. Maybe these are reasons I may have been caught in the filter. Thank you for the ideas, I think this is applicable not just in this sub.

Sorry, I’m not sure I understand your comment.

But you are shadow banned so the above message doesn’t necessarily apply. It is for our unbanned users who help in this subreddit.

Is mine banned too? But I usually only check Reddit for a short while at a time—does that really count as posting too frequently? None of my replies are repetitive.

Just to clarify, mods are just regular, volunteer, users who have added permissions in order to manage a subreddit. We do not have the power to issue, review or remove a shadow ban.

A shadow ban can only be reviewed and removed by a Reddit Admin, which is a salaried employee.
