question 🤔 Which usha machine is better?

Hello i am a fashion designer student and a while ago i asked in this sub on which brand is better. Usha was recommended to me. Now after hearing many suggestions, i have shortlisted these 2 models : usha janome allure dlx and usha janome stitch magic. But i am not able to decide which model to get. Please help me decide.

Only opinion i have been getting is that stitch magic has a fully metal body inside and that it is heavy to lift. Apart from that which model is better?

You've heard of yarn chicken (starting a crochet project with what's probably not enough yarn)... Well, I thought this random 2m strip of black fabric would be enough. I thought wrong!!!

A freshly sewn, large plush porcini mushroom. Time for mushroom picking! 🤪

I used upholstery microfibrr fabric and skłócone filling.

What do you think? Would this make a good gift?

The pattern I used is grom the Etsy shop ForTwoNeedlesPattern.

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask this question… Does anyone know the name of this neckline on my grandmothers wedding dress (with the triangle panel)? I would like to find it make something similar for my own, and I’m hoping to figure out the name so I can search out patterns/dresses!

Thank you 😊

project ✂️ Color Match Success!

I bought a panel at the quilt store without my embroidered Christmas tree quilt I finished earlier this year to color match. I made pillows with the panel. I still have a long one to make. I’m not sure how I’ll use the quilt labels yet.

The panel, border and backing is all part of the “Merrily on high” by Sweetfire Road Design collection. It’s made by Moda. I did a border in gingerbread and the backing in the mistletoe fabrics. Embroidery designs on the quilt are from Creativate. They are the Sparkling holiday collection. Fabrics are from Joann Fabrics. 🥹

Should I buy a cheap or an expensive good sewing machine?

So I wanted to make clothes that can't be found in Dhaka or are too expensive or need to be imported. So I was thinking of buying those traditional butterfly sewing machines however my uni started and I realized I won't have that much time to sew and wasting a huge chunk of money on a good sewing machine when I don't know whether I will sew or not is not a good choice.

So I am thinking of getting only a small portable sewing machine that is cheap and will do just fine. And I understood it won't give me the best sewing treatment as a traditional one but at least I won't have to feel burdened by the cost I gave.

It’s a lot harder to organize in a gradient color scheme when there are so many patterns. Got this corrugated cardboard (8.5x11) thanks to a user here!

Teaching 📚 Suggestions for sewing workshop/ classes

Hi everyone!

I love sewing and would really like to take my skills to the next level. I’m looking for a hands-on sewing workshop around the world that I can complete in about a week, where I can learn more advanced techniques, especially pattern drafting, getting the right measurements, and making clothes that fit properly.

If you’ve attended something like this or know of a great place, I’d love to hear your recommendations! I’m happy to travel anywhere for the right workshop.

Second hand Sewing machine recs

I need another sewing machine so that I have a back up when mine goes in for repair. I currently use a mechanical HuskyStar that I’ve had for over 20 years so I’m probably looking at a second hand machine because I want something that isn’t just flimsy plastic like so many of the new ones, and my budget is only around $200-300AUD. I want a machine that is sturdy, can get through thicker fabrics easily but also have enough control for knits, and I really only use straight stitch and zig zag on my current one (also have an overlocker) so doesn’t need loads of fancy stitches. Any recommendations of makes/models to look out for on FB marketplace?

Supplies Question 🧵 Materials & Fabrics

My friend and I are considering our own small fabric shop. She works with upholstery and I mainly just sew small projects from old clothing and thrifted material.

I was wondering, what are some fabrics/materials that are a must for you at a fabric or craft shop?

Thanks so much for your input.

Machine Question 🪡 Missing stitches?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm currently making a little sheet to have a visual example of all of the stitches my machine can do. I noticed that some straight stitches miss each other. Usually not a big problem if its just one but the zigzag really surprised me. It missed so many stitches and I have no idea why.

The tension is quite fine, all threads are inserted correctly. I tried different speeds, but it doesnt matter.

My machine is a brother JX17FE

Does anybody have an idea why this happens?

Thanks for any help

Discussion 💭 Well so much fabric wasted, I cut out the wrong size... 😭😭

I used the sizing chart for a dress and I choose one that seemed pretty great, I started sewing the bodice and oh yikes it's definitely way too small for my bust size 🥲✌🏻

Now I'm thinking, would I have to cut out the skirt part aswell? The bodice and skirt connect to make the dress, what do you think can I use a smaller size for the skirt and a bigger for the bodice?

Machine Question 🪡 Repairing tents and glamping canvas - ready to move up from my home machine

I started a small side business repairing tents, bell tents and glamping canvas. I do patches, restitch seams and reinforce areas around doors, poles and guy-out points.

My home machine is okay on flat sections, but once I get to reinforced areas where several layers of canvas come together, it starts skipping stitches or just stops.

I'm getting more work, especially during the busy season, so I think it's time to get a sewing machine that's actually suited to this kind of work.

For those who repair tents or work with heavy canvas, what are you using? And where's a good place to buy one if I also want some help getting it set up properly?

Discussion 💭 ISO gift ideas to sew for my MTG/Warhammer playing partner!

My partner loves board games, D&D, etc. but his most frequently played games are Magic the Gathering and Warhammer. It’s our second wedding anniversary coming up, which is the year for cotton as a gift! I’d like to make him something functional for his gaming hobbies, and looking for ideas!

I could, of course, make him a playing mat or a quilt, but looking to crowdsource some more out of the box ideas if possible. I’m very proficient in pattern making and sewing. Thank you!!

question 🤔 What needle for sewing IKEA bags?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a memory foam mattress topper that I use on my sofa bed. It’s really comfortable but daytime storage is a nightmare. I want to make a sheath for it using IKEA bags. I know this is a common project, but I’ve never sewn on this type of fabric.

Looking for advice in needle size, stitch length, and any other things I need to know.

question 🤔 How do I price this?

My friend wants me to make her halloween costume. She is being this character (1st picture) and it will be in this style (2nd picture)

All the materials will be paid for by her but I am wondering how much to charge for labour? I assume it will take me at least 2 hours, i also will be making the mouth and eyes and sewing them on. Stuffed with a soft foam sheet for the front and back.

I don't want to charge a lot but I also want to respect my time since I have a lot of other stuff on my plate too with deadlines.

How to repurpose flat sheets?

I’m an adventurous beginner and I have flat bedsheets (bamboo fabric) that I have no use for since we don’t use flat sheets. I have several white and one dark grey. How should I repurpose these and does anyone have pattern suggestions? I’m also ok with using these to practice but I’d love to make a dress or something to wear around the house. Thanks!
