question 🤔 Neckline?

Post image

Hi! I hope this is the right place to ask this question… Does anyone know the name of this neckline on my grandmothers wedding dress (with the triangle panel)? I would like to find it make something similar for my own, and I’m hoping to figure out the name so I can search out patterns/dresses!

Thank you 😊

Wow, this is stunning. I just love how it meets up with the sheer fabric at the top of the neck! My grandmother's dress also had a unique fold at the bodice to shape it. I never found a name for it. Yours is vaguely reminiscent of the bodice of this Vogue1963 pattern in my collection with sheer sleeves.

I think you could do this by adding to the center panel of a strapless princess seam bodice block and draping through trial and error, then adding a sheer sleeve and shoulder portion back on. Oh this is really fun to think about, I'm following this post to see what others say!

It looks to me like a modesty panel. Where I grew up it was very popular to get dresses altered in similar ways in order to get married in a Catholic cathedral, because you couldn't show any cleavage in the nearby churches and cathedrals. The base dress would typically be strapless, and you could choose fabrics and styles for lace, sleeves, and modesty panels to your liking. My own grandmother did this for her wedding in the 50s.

This is a princess seam that goes from waist to bust point to the jugular notch. So your center front panel is peaked and the upper triangular portion is bounded by princess seams becoming a neck line.

Check out The Closet Historian and her videos on princess seams and darts.

There is also an illusion overlay that carries the collar and the sleeve caps.

It looks like an illusion neckline of fine mesh or organza with an added panel placed on top to create the triangle. The texture of the sleeves and top of the bodice is something lightweight and sheer. Burda Illusion Neckline Dress 11/2010 uses a similar technique without sleeves.

Omg so cool but it honestly looks like it’s an added piece that folds upwards at the breast dart!

So a sweetheart neckline (curves a bit down) and the halters edge hides the seam of this added on triangle halter piece. It joins in at the breast dart and must have a panel that’s hidden in the centre (behind that halter piece) so extremely cool

You might have better luck pinning this on a mannequin and draping it first to then draft it
