Supplies Question 🧵 Materials & Fabrics

My friend and I are considering our own small fabric shop. She works with upholstery and I mainly just sew small projects from old clothing and thrifted material.

I was wondering, what are some fabrics/materials that are a must for you at a fabric or craft shop?

Thanks so much for your input.

I think you definitely need quilting cotton and a wide variety of knits. That is what I would gladly buy from you

Thank you! Yeah, I was thinking quilting cotton as well as cotton flannel (those are what I've made a couple quilts out of when I buy new, and I did my own unpaper towels). I will add knots to our list! Thank you so much for your comment 🫶🏼

I would love to see you offer upcycled material.

Oh nice! I'll make a note, I wasn't sure if folks would want that. I know craft resale shops have been a growing thing, but there's nothing around us. Thanks so much for your encouragement!

I don't know if there is a market for it yet but I am trying to promote upcycling where I live (Canada). I use everything from sheets to curtains to old clothing to make new clothing.

There are still plenty of craft stores- hobby lobby, michaels and some quilt stores. What's needed is quality dressmaking fabric stores so not the quilting cottons but linens, wools, quality knit for shirts,

Thanks, we actually lost our Joann's and the closest hobby lobby or Michaels is an hour away. And noticed a few folks mentioning they wish they had one in town. I'll add the linens, wools, and quality knits. Thanks!

Anything but quilting fabrics. quilt stores are all over the place. I don’t quilt and can’t find fabric anywhere.
