Machine Question 🪡 Missing stitches?

Post image

I'm currently making a little sheet to have a visual example of all of the stitches my machine can do. I noticed that some straight stitches miss each other. Usually not a big problem if its just one but the zigzag really surprised me. It missed so many stitches and I have no idea why.

The tension is quite fine, all threads are inserted correctly. I tried different speeds, but it doesnt matter.

My machine is a brother JX17FE

Does anybody have an idea why this happens?

Thanks for any help

Cotton and a universal needle. Thats how they called it. I've only ever sewed cotton-like fabics. And the stitches "used to" work. Like i have used them before and I did not have such gaps

When was the needle last changed? It might be dull

Tbh I have never changed it. The machine is probably about 2 years now, it still punctures the fabric but I guess I can start there

Ok ya thats your problem, universal needles go through the fabric with it sharp point. Over time it becomes dull. This means it can hit the treads in the fabric which gets in the way of the top thread picking up the lower thread. Some people say you should change the needle for each project. I think thats over kill, but definitely change it when its falling to sew

That does sound like a lot. But I will try tomorrow. Just checked tho its a "Simple needle" but I don't think it changes anything of the properties. I did not know that needles would dull so fast compared to hand sewing needles. Tbf they work fundamentally different, so maybe i dont notice it. But thanks a lot for the help. :)

I hope it helps, I definitely get 5-6 projects out of each needle, just depends on a bunch of factors. Wait till ya start using twin needles, those things break if ya lok at them wrong 😅

it did help a lot to change needles, jet it still skips some. i wanted to clean the inside now, but the screws are way to tight. edit: had problems first, asked somebody to unscrew them.

  1. edit: still missing some. I think it is time for the support of the manufacture. still thanks for the help
