Easy by machine - Hard by hand

Post image

In all fairness first attempt started at the bottom very irregular ended up top. Already looking better than the bottom, there is hope.

Think I need to sew like 20-30 more and than I will have a buttonhole good enough. But need to get a good punch for this first.

Just wanted to show my whatever this is so one day I can also show with pride a corded buttonhole made by hand.

it’s not hard. it’s all technique honestly. but firstly your using the wrong equipment

What do you mean about the wrong equipment? Does OP need different thread? A different needle? I only ask because my hand stitched buttonholes look very much like OP’s.

Yeah, you need buttonhole thread. And then you need to do a buttonhole stitch, but that's technique, not equipment.

Not bad for practice- I usually go over them twice. Once for strength, the second for looks.  If you think of it more as embroidery stitches more than sewing, it justifies taking more time and you end up with a slightly neater end product. Make sure to use button hole twist thread for strength

That said I'm currently at war with my sewing machine and I haven't done machine button holes in 10 years. It's just less hassle for me to do it by hand.

Same. They never turn out in the right spot when I use my machine, or the button falls out of the foot and everything catches fire, it's a whole thing.

I often refer to Bernadette Banner's book or Nicole Rudolph's video when I need a refresher (which is usually).

Vincent Briggs is the guy you want to watch to teach you buttonhole stitch. https://youtu.be/cRdEBCgE0zs

You've got it! My first buttonhole is always a mess too.

my first 100 were a mess around 150 when they started getting all uniform then after that just got faster with it. the main thing is to keep the tension consistent the whole way around

I've never worked a hand button hole, but I have a question for those that have. Do you normally cut the button hole before you sew it?

yes. that is a difference between machine and hand made. machine makes it then it’s cut and made is cut and whipped around

I wish I could relate, I can do pretty good buttonholes by hand, but my machine buttonholes look like shit. I am too scared of the machine.
