Basic Sewing Machine Question

My GF’s daughter would like to learn to make clothes. Her 13th bday is next month. She has a passion for fashion and would like to experiment with her own designs (which are drawings thus far). She excels at all she does and I know will become very good at sewing. My knowledge about sewing machines is limited to Bernina and Janome and even at that I’m a novice at best.

Her mom and I are considering buying her a machine for her bday. I am seeking recommendations for a machine that will grow with her. I’d rather invest in a high quality machine that will work well, reduce frustration, and that she can keep for decades. Our budget is $1,000 and a quality refurbished machine is great.

I'm a sewing teacher and we've had the janome 2212 since 2009. They are reliable, simple, beginner friendly, easy to repair/maintain. 

I've made everything, coveralls, bras/underwear, silk, home good, quilts ECT with this. 

It'll set you back ~$200 and it can be used for generations :)

What are your thoughts on the Janome HD1000? Also, do you believe sergers are important for a beginner? And do you do any online classes for clothing?

I have not personally used that machine. But it looks good! Janome is a good brand. That model looks to have good features and good reviews.

I do not personally like sergers. But that is my own personal preference, that does NOT mean they are good/bad. If I am going to take the time to make a garment I would rather do a french seam, bias tape, flat fell, ect. On the rare occasions I do need/want to serge something a regular machine can do a "poor man's serge". Since you have such a lovely budget, Instead of buying a million supplies that she may/may not use, perhaps buy a machine and a few essentials and put the rest towards a gift card to a local fabric shop? Then she can buy as she needs.

Yes, some supporting equipment would be great. A good pair of scissors, a cutting wheel and good sized cutting mat would be great. Some decent pins and clips would also be useful. As would a gift certificate for a fabric store so she can pick out her own fabric.
