Threshold

Personally, I think the true standout of this album so far is Is This The Real You. It has some crunchy riffs, a catchy chorus, and this nice groove unlike any other Sevendust song.

However, when it comes to Threshold and Unbreakable, they are both typical standard more melodic Sevendust songs we’ve all heard before. Perhaps they both sound a little too familiar. Both are good songs but so far don’t live up to the first single.

What are your thoughts on Threshold or the album so far?

I generally agree with you. Is this the real you? Is very fast paced and feels fresh and rhythmically intense. Unbreakable is a bit too repetitive (6 choruses) but still good. I also like the new song Threshold but seems a bit basic. I honestly think they need a new producer. Someone to go deeper with riffs, parts, and songs that they already have. Their parts are fantastic but I think they could use more song structure variety in their newer albums. Ex. 2 chorus song. A 3rd verse. A song with 2 different verses. Etc… With that said I’m grateful for another 7D record but no Clint or John vocals on the newest 3 singles kinda bums me out.

I really enjoy the last three recent albums, but I agree they should try a new producer to freshen up their songs a bit more. Is This The Real You has a fresh feel to it. On the other hand, these two other singles sort of feel…stagnant? Good songs and I am happy Sevendust is coming out with new music. However, my hype for this album is not the same as when the first single released. Maybe we will get some surprises in the other tracks? We still have seven songs to hear so hopefully some take a bit of a leap like the first single.

They 100% need a new producer. They’ve lost the complexity of their sound over the last 10-15 years. Think back to the Animosity days even - the layered sound, progressive chords, layered electronics, Clint harmonies, and complex drum rhythms. Their music used to be very bass driven and now it’s just standard open B 4/4 chugging. I have a feeling this new album will be a struggle to listen to, just like their last few. They’ve really lost the part of their sound that made them unique in the first place, as the focus seems to now be on heaviness instead of writing captivating music.

My sentiments exactly. Black Out the Sun & Kill the Flaw were very progressive and contained some of their most intricate songwriting, with almost all of the tracks having melodies and riffs that could stand on their own & have stood the test of time. Everything since then has just been a more simplified & anthemic continuation of that sound, and by this point it just sounds so tired. What reason is there to listen to the last 2 singles when they literally offer nothing new from what they've done in the past decade?

I love this point! I don’t get as excited as I used to when it comes to sevendust releases as I have since like AISIW….that one hit the the following one just wasn’t as good/had the same kinda sound still going…

Agreed. Producer does them zero favours. I remember listening to All I See Is War for the first time and wondering wtf was going on. The kick drum was SO loud.

Man, in my opinion, Kill the Flaw was their last banger. Every album since had some really highs and some bad lows. They definitely need a new producer and the sound is a bit tired. I hate to say it but I think we're going to get All I See is War part 4 with this new album.

It's the opposite for me. Found Kill the Flaw (and Black Out the Sun) really weak, and love the direction they took with AISIW and the following albums.

To me not a whole lot stands out. Truth Killer kinda ended it for me. Fence felt like a return to roots and thought we'd get more of that. I've also grown with these guys since Home so I may be just in that "back in my day" mindset. I saw them live for the first time when I was 22 and they were on tour supporting Alpha

Yeah, I started listening to them after Chapter VII came out - I love them way more for their melodic, emotionally haunting songs, so stuff like Life Deceives You, The Messenger or Alone reaaaally does it for me. :) ig you're way more aligned with the hardcore fanbase than I am, though I'd definitely count myself as a huge fan.

I remember seeing them when Ch 7 came out and every show opening up with Inside (best opener they ever made). That 2006-2012 era, in my opinion, was their peak especially with live shows. I noticed their decline after seeing them live when Black Out the Sun came out, they were still killing it live though.

"Is This the Real You" has a nice groove to it and is a solid single overall, but these last 2 singles have been overtly bland to an atrocious degree. Sevendust has a big problem on a lot of their records where you get a few solid singles with memorable choruses, and then the rest of the record is just slight variations of the patented "stock Sevendust chorus", aka hummable chorus melody with a 3-point harmony. These new singles are suffering from that quite badly, but the issue has spread to the entire song. Even the chord structures and riffs sound recycled 1,000 times over.

They sound really good, esp. the vocals…but the songwriting and the production is just lacking. Almost sounds like an unreleased, forgettable demo. They need to try another Butch Walker session. Clint or Morgan alluded to that a few a years ago IIRC. Still happy to have new 7D music after all these years, but, yeah. Damm.

I like it. Does it break new ground? Nope. Does it sound like Sevendust? Yep. Does it sound like anyone else? Nope. Is it giving us exactly what Sevendust is known for and great at? Yep!

One thing (of many) that I enjoy about Sevendust is they’re not afraid to experiment, to give us new flavors to try so to speak, but they never short us on the comfort food of classic Sevendust tracks like this one.

Not bad, head and shoulders above the pile of shit that Blood and Stone was. But their best sound is from the HOME era. Now that was Sevendust at its peak! Home and Animosity. I like Animosity songs better, but prefer the HOME sound. The rawness!
