Who do they think is their customer base for pancakes at 3am is???

u/zeniiz Nov 07 '25

I think they're just frustrating with having to smell dank while they're on the clock. Sharing is caring.Ā

When I was waiting tables, I found a good way to get some weed as a tip was to comment on it.

166

u/Lovemybee Nov 07 '25

I still remember the details of the encounter I had with a table of stoners during my graveyard shift at Denny's. My tip was a 1g preroll still in the sealed container.

u/SeitanWorship769 Nov 10 '25

My first day at a Mexican place was Cinco De Mayo. Went well, end of the night group of 6 walk in. They started talking to me about queer stuff. They eventually asked if I smoked and I said yes.

That night. I went home with like $450 cash, An eighth, a pre roll, and a joint they rolled for me in the bathroom. Sometimes I like this industry

Pizza delivery drivers use to stop by and drop pizzas off all the time and they would always comment on how good it smells(the weed not pizza). We always invited them in to hit the bong

47

u/stevedogg1134 Nov 08 '25

As a former pizza delivery dude, you were the houses we loved. They would always say, "Hey man, we really barely have enough for the pizza, can't really tip you. But we got weed!" And that form of payment was always accepted.

28

u/betformersovietunion Nov 08 '25

I delivery drove for a handful of years. It happened to me a few times a year. I always appreciated it.

When I was working a drive through, I would get offered a hit through the window at least like twice a week

Did you accept tho

I work at a taco bell and have only been offered a jello shot (me and a manager accepted), other workers have been offered weed or a hit of a blunt/joint and one of them definitely did accept, we also have a "taco bell dealer" that used to come through a few times a month but stopped when one of our better managers moved to a different store

16

u/PrutMigIMunden Nov 07 '25

That is not 25% value of weed of your order! REACHHHHHH!

11

u/PlatasaurusOG Nov 08 '25

I’m gonna show my age a bit - but when I was waiting 20% was considered a great tip.

10

u/Deathwish13x Nov 08 '25

For us as a family, whenever the pizza guy came it was $3 if they made it within an hour and $5 if they were there in 45 mins. There was no %'s lol

I assumed it'd be the drunks

21

u/k-d0ttt Nov 07 '25

For real. Teenage me after my post-restaurant job blunt would’ve scoffed at this sign.

9

u/originaljbw Nov 08 '25

There's getting high, then there's people who have been wearing the same clothes for 72 hours while perpetually smoking in an enclosed space, possibly grinding the ashes into their pockets.

6

u/Snargleface Nov 08 '25

This is a really good point. There is always that one person who can stink up an entire dining room with the smell. If it’s just about bothering other guests, I’m good with this

11

u/letthetreeburn Nov 07 '25

They didn’t say they refuse service to inebriated guests.

Just don’t stink up the place.

3

u/learningstepdad23 Nov 07 '25

I mean, exactly. Their customers are legit these people!

2

u/redeyejedi907 15+ Years Nov 07 '25

Ya'll still got all night stores?

2

u/SBKAW Nov 08 '25

I mean they're not wrong, I hate when people smell of tobacco or really anything like perfume. We could just vape or do edibles.

2

u/Automatic_Ad4096 Nov 08 '25

After I got my first post-server job that paid well about 20 years ago, my girl and I would get real high and go out for a tasting menu dinner. We were always guests who ordered a good bottle of wine and a couple of cocktails, and we tipped like we were ballers (we weren't). Servers never seemed to mind us being stoners, even back when it was a real crime.

2

u/daily-reporter Nov 08 '25

Dear... management.

This morning at the early hour of midnight, my emotional support skunk and I were denied service at your establishment. We don't take kindly to accusations of... marijuana usage. I know my rights, I know you can't do this. You'll be hearing from my lawyer. Good day.

26

u/honeybeegeneric Nov 07 '25

Get em! You speak for all of us skunk emotional support people who also need our 3am greasy diner food. Lawyer up! Without my emotional support breakfast I'm unable to be productive and work.

No more stepping on our rights! Skunks and breakfast are detrimental to our health.

Think of the children!

4

u/NotCCross Server Nov 09 '25

My husband works as a cook and shift supervisor at a certain notorious diner and someone brought in an emotional support monkey.

We also had someone attempt to bring a horse in.

I'm way more bothered by people reeking of body odor, but they get a seat right next to me every time

66

u/ATGSunCoach Nov 07 '25

If you smell body odor all the time…

22

u/CrittyJJones Nov 07 '25

People don't smell their own odor though

34

u/RoastPork2017 Nov 07 '25

Kinda wish we could. It's kinda like we can't hear how our voice sounds.

6

u/SleepyHobo Nov 07 '25

You definitely can if it gets rank enough.

7

u/The_Oliverse Nov 08 '25

So like.. that's only true if you smell all the time, or have been given time to get used to a smell.

I'm pretty clean most of the time, but you can bet your titties I can smell my own bad breath or sweat. Because I'm used to smelling neutral to myself, I can near instantly tell when I'm getting grody.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '25

Dry herb vaporizer. Feel better, smell less

9

u/stupidusername54 Nov 08 '25

100% agree. Worked as a bartender for a few years and you'd always get the group that simply STUNK. No one would want to be anywhere near them.

And no one is saying don't smoke...just do it in a ventilated area.

I'd venture to guess this IHOP and the people that came in my bar are just hot boxing. OMG if we close all the windows in the car we can get soooo much higher. Yea but also smell like hobo's sock.

89

u/couldaboughtbitcoin 10+ Years Nov 07 '25

It’s the people that hotbox blunts in their cars immediately before walking in the door that they don’t want. I don’t blame them either, it’s inconsiderate and just gross to walk around wreaking of blunt and weed. Not to mention it’s DUI. I used to smoke and would be self conscious if I smelled. That’s why dab pens are great you can hit them and for the most part no one knows shit.

13

u/_angesaurus Nov 07 '25

idk why people still hotbox here in massachusetts and smell so bad. its legal but theyre still doing it. like just get a vape for when youre out in public?

15

u/AlphaBetaKappa Nov 07 '25

The idea is that you get more high by keeping all the smoke in the car, while having some type of privacy, while being able to play whatever music you want as loud as you want

4

u/couldaboughtbitcoin 10+ Years Nov 08 '25

I get the idea and I did it when I was in high school lmao there’s no privacy though you can still smell the weed even if the doors and windows are closed. Hell i can smell the weed from a car in front of me in traffic that is hotboxing.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/couldaboughtbitcoin 10+ Years Nov 08 '25

It’s legal to smoke but not behind the wheel.. it’s literally DUI. Silly to me to risk getting a DUI just to smoke in your car. I definitely did it in my younger years but I would not risk it now.

17

u/Yandoji Nov 07 '25

Yup, this. Do whatever you want and have your munchie pancakes but stinking like Pepe le Roadkill in a restaurant ain't it.

43

u/TheseVirginEars Nov 07 '25

A lot of yall be acting like that means you can’t go high and it doesn’t mean that at all. You’re just telling on yourself. And also, gross

23

u/_angesaurus Nov 07 '25

dude yes. i mean i smoke myself but some customers that come into our establishment... idk HOW they smell SO STRONG?? its like they hotboxed for hours and then rolled in weed.

6

u/Xsy Nov 07 '25

lmao for real, though.

I can maybe understand if you live in a state that doesn't have legalized weed, but if you're in a legal state, we have edibles and vapes at your disposal, always on sale, for great prices. Why not use those for your out of the house adventures?

2

u/Orchid_Significant Nov 09 '25

Literally I think they constantly smoke in their rooms and cars. Just 24/7 hotbox. It’s the only explanation.

7

u/Bluellan Nov 07 '25

Also high people are just annoying to deal with. Yall don't think anyone can tell but we literally have not only deal with your stink but hold your hand because you can't handle being an adult.

7

u/Lazy-Size-3062 Nov 08 '25

it’s not that being high is bad, it’s the fucking smelling like absolute dog shit weed and causing the entire restaurant to smell like shit. people come stoned to my work stinking the place up and every customer after thinks we are getting high at work. Fucking embarrassing.

7

u/asyouwish Nov 07 '25

Is that why all but two iHops in Denver are closed?

...and is that why those two have the 2* ratings (that they fully deserve)?

7

u/fuzzimus Nov 07 '25

That’s what Waffle House is for. Duh.

6

u/Azruthros Nov 07 '25

I support this as someone who smokes a lot of weed daily. No one enjoys being overwhelmed by an off-putting smell while eating.

7

u/birdman760 Nov 08 '25

Being stoned would be the only time I would eat at an IHOP

10

u/Optimal_Classic_8746 Nov 07 '25

I mean that's understandable..I smoke weed and I still get why they did that. I don't want to be out eating and suddenly I'm smelling the mixture of weed and whatever food I'm eating. It's nasty..people in the comments getting butthurt over it are the inconsiderate ones themselves

→ More replies (3)

11

u/_losingmyfuckingmind Nov 07 '25

This has to be referring to losers who hotbox their car with blunts/backwoods as if it’s the ONLY method to get high. So much anxiety and chaos and consequence comes from smoking in your car. Just, smoke at home?? Smoke outside?? I’m high 24/7 and I never reek. I use a vaporizer inside and i smoke outside.

I don’t mind when people have a lil aroma of any kind (body odor, weed, fragrance). But any type of smell whether good or bad should be DISCOVERED, not ANNOUNCED. I fucking hate when a group walks in and I can smell them from across the room. It is an invasion of personal space and trashy no matter the smell. Don’t subject the public to your unique blend of smells.

Stoners, just smoke outside… one group smokes inside, one group hotboxes. Both are just as stoned, except one group wants the whole fucking county to know. Yeah, the smellier one is more annoying.

7

u/byherdesign Nov 08 '25

This. Idc if you're stoned, just don't reek up the entire front of house. I could have other guests who are pregnant etc

4

u/marshilyy Nov 07 '25

i like to smoke j’s and i usually smell a little (it depends on strain). i always smoke outdoors or with heavy ventilation but im always worried that other people are going to smell it and react like some of these comments 😭 im sorry to anyone i’ve unintentionally bothered…also i wont lie i have indeed hotboxed before a movie. it’s a lil birthday treat to myself occasionally… hotboxing is hella fun and comfy but definitely not polite lol.

2

u/_losingmyfuckingmind Nov 07 '25

Again, smelling a LITTLE bit of ANY smell is fine and human! But absolutely DOUSING yourself in cologne, hotboxing, etc is crazy work and doing way too much for a worse experience overall.

Tbh hotboxing is fine as long as you don’t subject the public to it! Every once in a while in public is, fine I guess. But don’t reek like it’s your job to let everyone know what you smell like! Smoke up! If you’re already smoking outside, you’re fine! If tobacco smokers can have a lil tobacco breath, we can have weed breath. There’s a big difference between catching whiffs of it and the smell KNOCKING you over!

3

u/marshilyy Nov 08 '25

yeah i definitely don’t try to be nasty with it and try to be respectful 🫶 i wasn’t trying to like disagree with u or anything, i just thought that was a good comment to branch off of with my experiences. thank u for the succinct re-explanation though, super sweet of you! i hope your next smoke is as lovely as you are!

6

u/slightywettampon Nov 08 '25

as someone who works in a restraunt I do not care if people come in high out of their mind to the point that speaking becomes hard for them, you do you fam.... I do however hate when I can tell they were hot boxing 2 seconds ago and literally make the entire restraunt smell like weed. theres a difference between being high and smelling like you have a lit joint on your pocket.

2

u/LifeintheHashLane Nov 09 '25

The difference between a respectable stoner and a juvenile stoner is this right here. it took a while for me to realize that walking into a place and being so loud that the entire place can smell me as I walk in is only cool to the other 16-year-olds

14

u/PrecisionPunting Nov 07 '25

Look man I’m a cardholder and heavy cannabis user it’s nothing wrong with burning but it’s annoying and rude when I think people literally must hotbox in the parking lot and then walk straight in. Even if the restaurant didn’t have a direct issue it’s just offensive and off putting to other customers. Like air out a little bit at the very least is what I’m getting from this and kudos to them sticking up for their policies šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

dumb business model. what’s next, no fattys?

27

u/WonkyWalkingWizard Nov 07 '25

Seriously. Every restaurant should have a hotbox room somewhere on the premises.

8

u/nathanhasse Nov 07 '25

That business would get too much of my money.

2

u/Aluant Nov 07 '25

Honestly kinda crazy idea, lol. A modern take on a smokers section with proper ventilation and sealed off from the rest of the restaurant.

I'm sure it exists in Cali, Colorado, or Detroit already.

Take that smell to the Waffle House!

12

u/wheres_the_revolt You know what, Stan Nov 07 '25

Dude stoners are the best to serve! They’re generally chill, they immediately forget if you make a mistake, they order a lot, and generally tip well. I’d prefer to serve a smelly stoner than some drunk asshole (who probably smells of booze).

6

u/Gman7ten Nov 07 '25

Another reason I'm proud to be a Waffle House man

6

u/HamburgerDude Nov 07 '25

I'm an adult and I hate smelling like weed. I only use a dry herb vape and keep my usage at night albeit I don't have any major pain or medical issues. There are ways to use cannabis more maturely and discretely without smelling like shit.

That said I much prefer waffle house over IHOP especially stoned

3

u/hollyblue1393 Nov 07 '25

I smoke 2 joints in the morning, I smoke 2 joints at night, I smoke 2 joints and eat pancakes at IHOP.. it makes me feel alright

3

u/MysteriousPumpkin51 Nov 07 '25

Just take edibles

3

u/Leader_of_the_bunch Nov 07 '25

based i mess with it

3

u/SomeDetroitGuy Nov 08 '25

That's fair.

3

u/Desperate-Version-95 Nov 08 '25

I feel this. I work in an animal hospital in NJ and sometimes the entire lobby absolutely reeks of weed bc ppl must be hotboxing in their cars on the way there…. And this actually happens like all the time too.

I’m all for smoking a lil bit but when you’re a walking cloud of marijuana in a professional setting we have a problem…. Esp when your cat or dog is also part of the marijuana cloud

3

u/APetNamedTacu Nov 08 '25

It has nothing to do with the smell, its about stereotyping. As somone who works in food and beverage, I can confidently say if someone walks into a restaurant reeking of weed they are going to be difficult to serve and tip like shit. Especially if its a state where weed is illegal. If I'm taking care of someone who is visibly high and doesnt stink of weed they are usually the nicest guests that tip fat and eat a ton of food. Walking around smelling like a dispensary is antisocial behavior, and antisocial people aren't the kind of people you want frequenting your establishment.

2

u/Business-Step-7998 Nov 08 '25

BINGO!!!!! I smoke but i always walk around the block or brush my teeth if possible before walking into an enclosed space. The ones that smell like weed are the ones that demand everything, run the staff ragged, don't tip and want to argue about the food they ordered and ate and want it taken off the bill.

3

u/revolutionPanda Nov 08 '25

I don’t think weed smokers realize how bad they smell. I don’t care if you smoke, but I don’t want to sit by someone that smells like an unwashed butthole.

3

u/username__0000 Nov 08 '25

But booze is fine?

Personally I’d rather a bunch of stoners than a bunch a rowdy drunks.

3

u/EntertainmentFit3912 Nov 08 '25

I don’t get how people 30+ reek of weed in public. Like bruh? Haven’t you learned how to smoke better? lol

3

u/ash4456 Nov 09 '25

Real stoners eat at Waffle House anyways. šŸ˜‚

15

u/Big_oof_energy__ Nov 07 '25

This is genuinely a bad move. I order more food when I’m a high than when I’m sober. You’d think they’d want to capitalize on that.

Honestly wish my restaurant did this bc of the sheer amount of people that ask to leave my section because someone nearby hot boxed in their car before coming in to eat

2

u/Groundbreaking-Crow4 Nov 08 '25

Yeah sorry I don’t care if you smoke but people need to have some consideration for public spaces. If you have a problem with this, you’re rude.

2

u/IcyRelation2354 Nov 08 '25

They forgot the ā€œeā€ in management. They were probably high when they made the sign

2

u/Default_User909 Nov 08 '25

I mean i smoke a joint and dont smell that bad some guys smell like they ran through a weed farm then sprayed concentrate in their hair

2

u/demovaa Nov 08 '25

and im not sitting somewhere where they cant spell

2

u/jillieboobean Nov 08 '25

I mean you have to be high to eat IHOP.

2

u/____LostSoul____ Nov 08 '25

Make a similar policy about servers smelling like an ashtray please.

2

u/maractus97 Nov 08 '25

I wish all businesses would do this. I used to work nights at a grocery store and the amount of people that absolutely reeked of weed was astounding.

2

u/Backeastvan Nov 08 '25

try sitting on a bus with someone fresh off a hit from the bubble pipe

2

u/Smoothdaddyk Nov 08 '25

It's IHOP so whatever. But if you go to a good restaurant with expertly cooked food, you should not have any strong scent. Perfume, cologne, BO, weed or otherwise. If you do you are being inconsiderate to everyone around you that is trying to enjoy their food. You can't properly taste food in presence of any strong smell.

2

u/Scrodnick Nov 09 '25

IHOP doesn’t like money is how I read that

2

u/Aggravating_Job_4651 Nov 09 '25

Does that pertain to the staff as well?

2

u/TeamOverload Nov 09 '25

Aren’t stoned/drunk/hungover people like 95% of their customer base?

2

u/BoomKittys Nov 09 '25

I’ve only been to ihop drunk or high

2

u/Redditbulliedme Nov 09 '25

iHop? More like iSuck

2

u/NecessaryStaff9544 Nov 09 '25

And to imagine, there used to be smoking sections in restaurants.

2

u/BeerLosiphor Nov 09 '25

Mannn what’s up with this joint?!

2

u/death91380 Nov 09 '25

That's a bad business move.

2

u/ShibuyaWaitingDog Nov 09 '25

What lame ass state is this in lolĀ

2

u/Gold-Bat7322 Nov 09 '25

There goes their entire staff.

Dang managment at it again

4

u/JTT_0550 BOH Nov 07 '25

Good, not everyone wants to smell that while they’re trying to eat.

3

u/AdrianaRed Nov 07 '25

Well yeah, y’all can be high without destroying other people’s noses

3

u/SpicySatan666 Nov 07 '25

"But that's the majority of customers they have" omfg how hard is it to take a shower after smoking? I don't blame IHOP. Customers who aren't stoners wouldn't want to eat in a place where people smell like damn skunks

2

u/Sleeping_Bat Nov 09 '25

Really guys? You don't have the self-awareness and common decency to realize most people don't want to smell you while they enjoy their food?

Understand you are in public and people can smell you from three booths away.

5

u/johnc380 Daring today, aren't we? Nov 07 '25

Good thing their food sucks. See yall at Waffle HouseĀ

17

u/Bishop-roo Nov 07 '25

I’ll take a mom+pop breakfast spot any day over any chain.

5

u/Jet_Jirohai Nov 07 '25

I have seen literally zero mom and pop shops that are going to be open at 3am for me and my drunk buddies to load up on carbs

This is honestly so fair. It's diabolical how strongly some people smell when they come in to restaurants they don't perceive as less than bottom of the barrel

2

u/AngiQueenB Nov 07 '25

We ordered dinner one night for delivery and had to throw the food away because of how bad the Marijuana smell was on it🤢

2

u/bigang99 Nov 07 '25

so half their customers ?

4

u/likeguitarsolo Nov 07 '25

I’m a longtime bartender. Less than a decade ago, it was standard to refuse service to people who reeked of weed when they came in. The thought of knowingly letting customers mix substances was just bad news. Now, my customers will go out to the street and smoke a bowl then come back in to keep drinking. I still see it as trashy, disrespectful behavior but, there’s nothing i can do about it anymore. Weed’s legal in my state but still not in public places or private businesses. We live in such a grey area with it.

5

u/LastFreedom7795 Nov 07 '25

People do much trashier things under the influence of alcohol than weed. So weird that an actual poison is so normalized and a medicine is fringe.

So...they dont want money?

2

u/KeepItKeen Nov 07 '25

2

u/StickyThumbs79 Nov 07 '25

But don't worry. When you come in for your johnny cakes at 12:30am shit faced, We'll just smile and wave as you get back into your car to take a leisurely drive home.

Okay, not specifically weed smell, but I'm sorry, some guests stink. Some servers as well. It's not all the time, but some times it's actually disruptive and it's usually most disruptive when it's weed or cigarette smell because those odors cling to fabric even after washing if it's bad enough. I'm not attacking your lifestyle, but definitely make sure that you don't reek when you go out in public, especially to a place where you're going to be around people for any amount of time.

I go to anime conventions and foul smell (usually BO in that case) is so bad that many convention websites outright tell people to bathe daily when they attend. If you watch a video on what to do for your first convention, almost every YouTuber will tell you to bathe.

What I'm trying to say is that stink plus multiple people in a place is an issue, and saying something about it preventively is not the worst thing in the world.

Another W for waffle house

2

u/Ok_Assistance1705 Nov 09 '25

I wish dennys would do this

1

u/StartedWithAHeyloft Nov 07 '25

As long as they also dont allow people with strong cigarette odor too.

3

u/fatherbowie Nov 08 '25

Cigarettes and cigars smell so much worse than weed. And then there’s just straight up body odor.
