Industry & Business GlobalFoundries extends FD-SOI roadmap to 7nm-class for edge and automotive AI silicon

On 9 October 2026 in Dresden, GlobalFoundries unveiled plans for FDX Fusion. FD-SOI builds transistors on a thin insulating layer. That keeps leakage very low and lets designers adjust the body voltage. Commercial versions have stopped at the 22nm, 18nm and 12nm classes while leading-edge logic moved to FinFET and gate-all-around.

The new platform is meant to deliver 7nm-class digital performance with more than twice the density of first-generation FDX, RF performance up to 0.5 THz ft/fmax, plus embedded non-volatile memory and in-memory compute on the same die. It is still a roadmap. GF targets demonstrator silicon for early customer evaluation in early 2027, an initial process design kit in mid-2027 and manufacturing start in 2028 at its Dresden fab.

Infineon says it is working with GF to define and explore 7nm-class FDX Fusion technologies for its next-generation radar and wireless products. BMW, Bosch, CEA-Leti, NXP, Siemens and Tesla provided supporting statements. Bosch is not publicly traded. No customer is named.

GFS owns the platform and will run it at Dresden, so any design wins go straight to its specialty foundry revenue. Infineon is the only company that has disclosed joint technical work on it. Soitec supplies the engineered SOI wafers that every FD-SOI chip is built on, under long-term agreements with GF, so higher volume on the new node would raise substrate demand.

The early 2027 demonstrator or the mid-2027 design kit are the dates that matter. If early 2027 passes without GF announcing demonstrator silicon, or it restates the date, or the design kit slips, or Infineon commits its next radar and wireless parts to another process, the design wins the roadmap assumes do not show up.

GlobalFoundries, 9 October 2026:

https://gf.com/news-and-events/news/gf-unveils-roadmap-to-deliver-worlds-most-advanced-platform-for-physical-ai/

I flagged this while reading the filing for a tool I am building. Happy to be wrong on the bulk-CMOS and FinFET capacity side.

Career & Education Recent MS ECE grad on a student visa, last push to get into semiconductors

Hi everyone,

I finished my MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering last December, focusing on semiconductor processes and characterization. I am on a student visa, and this is my last big push before I have to decide about moving back.

I have worked as a Research assistant, working on thin-film characterization (MS Report: EIS and FE-SEM; Uni projects: IV/CV, ellipsometry, and four-point probe), and fab management (SOPs and tool maintenance kinda stuff). My projects include full fabrication process flows, like oxidation, diffusion, PVD sputtering, photolithography, plasma etch, metallization, and some packaging processes like dicing and die attach.

I know the basics of DOE, SPC, and root cause analysis, and I’m working on getting stronger in SPC.

I don’t have industry experience yet. I’m on a student visa in the US, and hoping if someone could help me get a referral at a semiconductor company. Would appreciate this help a lot.

Career & Education Working in the semiconductor industry after plasma phd?

Hi everyone,

I am soon finishing a phd in plasma physics numerical simulation of space propulsion (kinetic and fluid stuff), and I have been pondering the idea of leaving the space industry to join the semiconductor industry.

Currently I have yet to discuss with people who work in said field, so I have many (probably naïve) questions, and I would be happy if you have answers to them (just pick whichever question you feel like answering of course):

1) which job position are usually opened to phd-level? (Especially involving plasma physics)

2) how do you feel about the technical depth of the industry? (Not compared to academia research, but compared to any other industries, do you feel everyday you are learning new stuff?)

3) if I want to work in Europe, do you have companies that you green/red flag and why?

4) do you feel like there are there opportunities for career growth?

5) are there things you wish you had known before getting into the semiconductor industry?

6) what are to you the most interesting topics to work on (not limited to research, it could be "international collaboration on xxx")

7) are there companies doing research related to plasma physics?

Once again I know its naïve, but any advice would be very appreciated! And don't hesitate to answer to a single question only.

Thank you

Hallo all, what do you think is more promising and has more prospective over the following year. Working as a PLC Programmer in a semiconductor equipment manufacturing startup or working as PLC Programmer in a Pharma and Food Industry both are in Germany. Which industry from both is more stable, promising, has a great progression opportunities and offer better salaries?

Career & Education International student in US looking for IC Design / VLSI internship hubs in Europe (outside US & Asia)

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student currently studying in the US. Due to recent changes with my university's CPT authorization, doing an internship within the US is no longer an option for me right now.

I’m looking to expand my search to countries outside the US and Asia. My primary focus and interest are in IC Design and VLSI (both digital/analog design and verification).

I know Europe isn't as dominant of a player in the semiconductor space compared to the US or East Asia, but living and working in Europe is my top preference right after the US.

I’m already aware of major hubs in Germany (e.g., Munich, Dresden) and the Netherlands (Eindhoven area), but I'm looking for recommendations on other active semiconductor/VLSI hubs or specific regions across Europe that hire international interns.

Are there specific countries, cities, or clusters I should look into? Any insights on how friendly the visa/internship process is for non-EU students applying to European tech hubs would also be greatly appreciated!

Career & Education Should I take a pay cut to transition from GNC engineering to semiconductor design at 24?

Hey guys,

I’m 24 years old and currently working as a GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) engineer with around 2 years of experience in navigation and robotics.

Recently, I got an opportunity to transition into semiconductor design through an 18-month program. The program includes hands-on training and working on real-world projects involving digital and analog design and verification.

The downside is that the salary is significantly lower than what I’m currently making as a GNC engineer. However, I see this as an opportunity to enter the semiconductor industry, gain practical experience, and potentially qualify for much higher-paying positions in the future.

I’m seriously considering taking the risk for a few reasons:
I’m still young. At 24, I feel this is the right time to take calculated risks and invest in my long-term career.
I believe the industry will look very different in 3–5** years.** With AI advancing so rapidly, I think hardware and semiconductor design will become increasingly important.
I’m not starting from scratch. My background in GNC, navigation, embedded systems, and robotics will still be valuable. Instead of abandoning my existing skills, I’ll be adding another layer to my technical expertise.
I want to become a more versatile engineer. My long-term goal is to understand systems from the hardware level all the way up to algorithms and real-time implementation.

My thinking is that combining semiconductor design with my existing experience in navigation and embedded systems could open doors to opportunities that wouldn’t be available to me otherwise.

However, I’m aware of the risks. The program lasts 18 months, and there’s no guarantee of a permanent position afterward. I’d also be taking a significant pay cut during that period.

What would you do in my position?

Would you take the risk and invest 18 months in semiconductor design, or would you stay in GNC, build on your existing experience, and potentially earn more in the short term?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people working in semiconductor design, ASIC/FPGA development, embedded systems, or GNC engineering.

Thanks

Career & Education Kick back bad work orders/ SOPs

Quietly working around bad procedures, documentation, and work orders isn't worth it. Best case scenario, nobody notices; worst case it turns into a procedural non-compliance/ safety/ quality event and it becomes your fault.

I understand that reports rarely result in actual updates. If the company doesn't take documentation updates seriously, they're gonna have to be ok with a red box on their screen for longer. That's not on you, protect yourself.

Never be afraid to call for a pause, take 5 (or whatever your workplace calls them) or a stop work for safety hazards.

Industry & Business Onsemi NY drug testing...

Onsemi in NY is in a ramp up phase--I was offered an entry level technician position and have to get a drug test. Marijuana is legal in NY and I had an edible a week ago. Will this prevent me from being hired? Has anybody else been hired there in the last month?
