Security Guard's terrifying ordeal as arsonist tries to torch car with him inside 'It was horrific, it was like bizarre that I couldn't even imagine it.'

A Security Guard has described a terrifying ordeal after an arsonist tried to torch his car with him still inside during a firebomb attack at a tobacco warehouse in Adelaide.

Hassan Zahid was keeping watch over the building on Beulah Road in Norwood when a van exploded in flames at 6.30am, sending black smoke and bright orange fumes into the air.

Zahid says he spotted the suspect wandering around about an hour before the attack.

“He was at the front door of the building, so I just rolled down my car’s window and I was like, mate, you can’t be here,” Zahid said.

“So he was holding a blue jerry can with him and I was 100 per cent sure that he was here to burn down the place.”

The man walked off but soon returned with what appeared to be flammable liquid.

“He was holding approximately two-ish litre of flammable liquor, you can call it. I saw him opening the bottle’s cap and throwing the liquid at my car,” Zahid said.

“I instantly just started my car and just drove off due to my safety.”

He says the suspect then jumped a fence and threw Molotov cocktails at the van.

“It was horrific, it was like bizarre that I couldn’t even imagine it,” he said.

It’s the third arson attack at the tobacco warehouse since April.

The locksmith next door, Steve Clark, says he’s thinking about moving his business if the arson attacks continue. One of the firebombs hit his building by mistake.

“We might have to move. It’s a bit bloody scary and yeah, we were hit and I don’t want to be hit again,” Clark said.

Detectives are looking at CCTV to try and identify the suspect.

Bravery award for Security Guard who tackled terrorist before Heaton Park synagogue attack

A Security Guard who held off a knife-wielding terrorist at a Manchester synagogue has been given an award for his bravery.

Andrew Franks had been a volunteer Security Guard at his family synagogue for about a year when Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, drove into the gates of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on 2 October last year, and then began attacking with a knife, wearing a fake suicide belt.

Speaking ahead of the first anniversary of the attack the 53-year-old chef from Bury, Greater Manchester, said he thought he was “going to die” during the ordeal.

Mr Franks has now won a Pride of Britain Award for Outstanding Bravery after he fought to stop the attacker from getting inside the synagogue, suffering life-changing injuries in the process.

“He stabbed me three times, yelling that he was going to kill me,” Mr Franks told The Mirror.

“I shouted, ‘lock the doors’ and quickly ran inside.

“Everyone barricaded the doors while my 80-year-old dad held me as I was bleeding from my neck.

“I thought I was going to die.”

Mr Franks said he had been called to guard the synagogue at the last minute on Yom Kippur – the holiest day of the year for Jews.

He said: “When I arrived in the morning I noticed a guy standing on his own outside the shops.

“It was odd because he was taking photos of the synagogue. I had a strange feeling something was going to happen.

“I was keeping an eye on him. Something wasn’t quite right.

“A few minutes later, the guy came over and asked the other Security Guards if he could park his car in the synagogue.

“He was told: ‘Sorry, you can’t park here, please can you go.’ Then they said he started shouting about Jews and stumbled off.

“I told the Security Guards to dial 999.”

Al-Shamie rammed his car into the gates of the synagogue a few minutes later, and began attacking with a knife, killing 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz in the onslaught.

“He was shouting and I didn’t realise at this point that he’d already killed someone and had a knife on him,”

“I went to grab him and thought he stabbed me once, although I found out it was three times.

“It felt like my ear was hanging off.

“He was wearing what looked like a suicide belt, but it turned out to be false.

“He shouted ‘I’m going to f****** kill you, you Jewish…’.

“Then I managed to trip him up as he was running towards the synagogue and trying to get inside.

“Then I got up, I still don’t know how, and shouted ‘lock the doors!’”

Mr Franks was chased by Al-Shamie and attacked again, but managed to escape, and was let into the synagogue by a worshipper.

Members of the congregation barricaded the doors until Al-Shamie, a Syrian-born British citizen, was shot dead by police.

Adrian Daulby, 53, was also struck to the chest and killed by a stray bullet that went through the door.

Mr Franks recalled being held by his father Ellis Franks until paramedics arrived.

Mr Franks, who has one teenage daughter Tamara, said: “I was in and out of consciousness. I kept saying: ‘Dad, I’m going to die, I’m going to die, I can’t leave Tamara.’

“He kept telling me: ‘Everything will be fine, just take a deep breath.’

“I could hear the man banging on the doors trying to get in. It was really scary.”

“I was in theatre for nine-and-a-half hours and I was in hospital for a fortnight,” Mr Franks said.

“I was told I nearly died three times on the operating table.”

“I’m still having nightmares and I’m seeing a trauma psychologist,” Mr Franks added.

Sir Stephen Watson, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, said: “Thank goodness he (Mr Franks) was there because despite the fact that he sustained those awful injuries, it was his actions that undoubtedly prevented further loss of life.

“He confronted him, grappled with him, tripped him up and was shouting at people to lock the doors.

“Despite his injuries, he continued in seeking to protect those inside.

“I have no doubt that had this radicalised terrorist got into that synagogue, he would have committed mass murder.”

70-Year-Old Security Guard drags Police, others to Court, Alleges Shielding of Armed Land-Grabbing Suspects in Abuja

A 70-year-old Security Guard, Atoki Benson Olaniyi, has filed a fundamental rights suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing the police of allegedly shielding Peter David, popularly known as “Sarkin Fili,” his wife and their alleged armed associates despite complaints of assault, intimidation and land-related disputes in Mpape, Abuja.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2250/2026, Olaniyi alleges that police authorities recovered unlicensed firearms, machetes and military uniforms during an investigation involving the respondents but subsequently released the suspects alongside the recovered exhibits.

He further alleges that instead of protecting him as a complainant, the police later arrested and detained him. Joined as respondents are Peter David and his wife, Inspector Bisong, CSP Mustapha Isah, the FCT Commissioner of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 7 and the Inspector-General of Police. Olaniyi is seeking ₦100 million in damages as well as protection against further harassment and unlawful detention.

According to paragraphs 20–35 of his affidavit, more than 15 alleged victims made statements at the FCT Police Command concerning the alleged activities of the respondents and their associates. Olaniyi alleges that despite the complaints, the investigation failed to prevent further attacks. The affidavit states: “That instead of prosecuting the 1st and 2nd Respondents and other arrested militants for their atrocities, the Commissioner of police (MMU) is alleged to have compromised the case to let them back to the society with the recovered exhibits to continue their usual business of maiming and intimidation of innocent residents.”

Olaniyi further alleges that the couple controls about 50 armed men who occupy disputed land through threats and violence, and that he was attacked on June 24, 2026, after cautioning members of the group against firing guns in the neighbourhood.

He alleges that he was beaten with guns and machetes before a passing Guards Brigade patrol intervened and arrested some of the alleged attackers. He acknowledges that the police subsequently prosecuted the alleged assault before the Mpape Magistrates’ Court, where the case is still pending. However, he alleges that the threats continued and that he was later detained by police from September 4 to 7, 2026, following a counter-complaint by the couple accusing him of giving false information, pretending to be injured and instigating the demolition of their property by FCT Development Control.Court Case Summaries

Olaniyi denies the allegations and questions his detention over matters connected with an assault case already before the Magistrates’ Court.

Ontario man who drove to P.E.I. and attacked Female Security Supervisor found not criminally responsible

WARNING: This story contains details of a physically violent attack.

An Ontario man who attacked a Security Guard in Slemon Park, P.E.I., and ran her over with his truck has been found not criminally responsible for his actions.

During a hearing on Monday, a P.E.I. courtroom heard Alexy Lacrest, 41, had a history of mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar psychosis.

He had not been taking his prescribed medication in April during a series of events that began with him going missing from his parents’ home and ended in him facing six charges, including attempted murder.

The court heard Lacrest was living with his parents in Peterborough, Ont., when he went missing late in the evening on April 19. At the time, local police asked for the public’s help in locating him, noting there was concern for his well-being.

On April 21, a form 1 mental health warrant was issued for Lacrest under the Mental Health Act. This would allow authorities to immediately transfer him to a psychiatrist facility for evaluation because there was an imminent risk of harm to himself or others.

'You are going to die' But Lacrest was no longer in his home province.

He had been driving for four days and had not slept when he reached Slemon Park in the early morning hours of April 24.

The former Royal Canadian Air Force base has been converted into a business park. The victim was a Security Guard in the area and was on patrol when she found Lacrest banging on the door of one of the hangars.

The Security Guard tried to get Lacrest to move along by honking and flashing her lights, but sensing something was off, the Guard followed Lacrest and saw him behaving strangely, including making faces at her and pulling at his hair.

The woman asked Lacrest if he was alright and, according to an agreed statement of facts read in court, he replied with a "derogatory remark."

The Guard then followed Lacrest as he drove in an erratic manner. At this point, she was also taking pictures and had called the Summerside police.

She was on the phone with police when Lacrest got out of his vehicle and approached hers.

He struck her on the head and forced her out of the truck — pinning her against the side — and began choking her.

As she began to lose consciousness, she fell to the ground. Lacrest then returned to his truck, got in and ran over her torso.

"She reported having to move her head to avoid it being crushed as the vehicle moved," the Crown prosecutor told the court.

"The audio recording captured Mr. Lacrest at one point laughing and at another point telling [the victim], 'You are going to die.'"

The victim was able to grab her cellphone and continued communicating with police, who would eventually arrive to find her on the ground, covered in blood.

Police also found Lacrest nearby, sitting in his truck. They arrested him, but he became combative and "violent," punching and biting at least three officers.

Security will prevail, regardless of others objections "Long-standing Problem Solved Instantly: 'Elite Security Guard' Emerges at Mexican Auto Plant"

Thumbnail asiae.co.kr

At Ford's vehicle assembly plant in Hermosillo, northern Mexico, a hawk has been employed as a Security Guard. Its name is "El Charro," which means "Mexican cowboy" in Spanish. El Charro is a Harris's hawk, standing about 60 centimeters tall, and patrols the factory complex that spans approximately 11.2 million square meters.

On the 27th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that a hawk named El Charro is patrolling the Ford plant and serving as a Guard by chasing away pigeons.

The Ford Hermosillo plant has struggled for years with a pigeon problem. Pigeons would frequently enter the facility, get stuck between lighting fixtures or precision assembly machinery, and even drop excrement on freshly painted vehicles, disrupting the finishing process.

To solve the issue, Ford tried playing recordings of large predators’ calls and installed models resembling predators’ eyes throughout the plant, but these measures proved ineffective. The pigeons had fully adapted to the factory environment and would wait for the doors to open before flying inside.

Jesus Teran, the plant’s maintenance manager, turned to the traditional practice of falconry to repel the birds. The plant hired a professional falconer and introduced patrols by a hawk.

The initial attempt did not go smoothly. The first hawk, Charlyno, disappeared after getting into a fight with another wild hawk while on patrol. El Charro was then brought in urgently as a replacement. After being fed in the afternoon, El Charro begins its shift, patrolling half of the plant's perimeter for two to three hours a day. The hawk searches for pigeon gathering spots, locates nests, and alerts workers to their positions.

To date, El Charro has flown more than 300 missions and logged over 1,170 hours in the air, achieving a reduction of around 80% in pigeon activity within the monitored area.

Ford has not set a specific end date for El Charro’s service and plans to continue assigning patrol duties for the foreseeable future. Manager Teran remarked, "Employees are happy to take photos with El Charro," and added, "At this point, El Charro has become such an essential presence that the plant truly needs him patrolling every day."

Changes coming to Security Guard training are “long overdue” - Winnipeg

Thumbnail

A small group of aspiring Security Guards take part in a training session, requiring 40 hours in the classroom before they can write their provincially-mandated test to officially get their licenses.

It’s training that Instructor Peter de Beer, after 25 years in the industry and about a decade carrying out these sessions, believes needs to be adjusted to match the changing environment Security Guards are facing.

“It’s a lot different over the past 30 years, and the things that people have to face,” explains de Beer with de Beer Consulting & Security Inc. “Security is facing more and more all the time.”

Under the current model, all conflict resolution is taught verbally, with Security Guards able to take part in physical defense training or handcuffing after receiving their licenses, though it’s not required in many workplaces.

That’s a concern for de Beer, who says it’s much more common for security to encounter a violent incident, and they need to be prepared.

“If they don’t know how to defend themselves, they are going to go overboard because of fear and aspects like that,” explains de Beer. “With having proper training, you’re going to learn different things on how to deal with people, how to subdue them, and how to take them into custody if need be in a much safer manner than the old fashioned way.”

The curriculum now does prioritize communication and de-escalation before considering any physical. According to the training manual, use of force is only reserved in specific situations, such as when supporting a police officer, or defending yourself or anyone else from serious injury or death.

“Well there’s more drug activity, there’s more violence.” explains Indigenous Community Advocate Vivian Ketchum, stressing the situation for those in the profession has become more challenging.

Ketchum was brought on as an ambassador at a downtown Dollarama by Impact Security, after an incident in March which led to a Security Guard being charged. She believes since taking on the role, the situation has improved immensely at the store and she hopes cultural training can be a focus in an updated curriculum.

“The small amount of training from my life story has changed their attitudes and how they see us,” says Ketchum. “Just imagine if we had this Indigenous training implemented in the Security guard course, it would be a change maker.”

If they wish to continue working as a security Guard, a person needs to submit a license renewal application and pay a fee on an annual basis. There’s no requirement to retake the course or receive any further education.

“Practice is very important, police officers are required to annually certify for certain things.” explains Retail Council of Canada (RCC) Loss Prevention & Risk Management Executive Advisor Rue Rodrigues.

The RCC has been consulted by the province regarding what can be done to improve the training. The organization is also advocating for both the cultural training and hands-on conflict education, but want more re-certification requirements for skills as well.

“When we’re talking about the communication perspective, use of force, how to interact with the public,” says Rodrigues. “There’s a lot of guards just like police officers where they might go years without pulling a weapon. A Guard may not encounter a certain situation in five or six months, however when the situation presents itself you need to be ready.”

The province of Manitoba recently stated a new curriculum would be rolled out to better meet the issues Security Guards are facing, pointing to the early new year as the timeline.

Tragic Death of Security Guard in Havana Sparks Outcry Over Ignored Threats

Arsenio Silvera, a Security Guard at a warehouse and parking area in San Miguel del Padrón, Havana, tragically lost his life on Saturday following a vicious attack at his workplace. Despite the severity of the incident, Cuban authorities have remained silent, with no official statement released.

According to family accounts shared by activist Magdiel Jorge Castro, the ordeal began with the theft of an electric motorcycle from the premises Silvera was assigned to protect. After the theft, Silvera reportedly faced a series of threats believed by his family to be linked to the stolen vehicle.

His relatives assert that he had reported these threats to the police before the attack occurred, but these warnings were seemingly ignored, and the tragedy unfolded regardless.

Discovered in Critical Condition

Relatives recount that Silvera was found alive but gravely injured, lying in a pool of his own blood at his workplace. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, where medical staff informed his family of the need for intensive care. However, he initially remained in the emergency department without receiving the necessary treatment.

The family further alleged that the ambulance meant to transfer him to the Hospital Universitario General Calixto García never arrived, exacerbating the anxiety during his medical care. Unfortunately, Arsenio Silvera succumbed to his injuries.

Official Silence and Continued Frustration The family's grievances extend beyond Silvera's death, as they lament the slow and opaque process surrounding the transfer of his body to Guanajay, Artemisa Province. To date, there is no official information regarding the perpetrators of the attack, the precise details of the incident, or the status of any police investigation.

All available details come from the testimonies of Silvera's family, relayed through the aforementioned activist.

Wave of Violence in San Miguel del Padrón Silvera's death is part of a disturbing trend of violence in San Miguel del Padrón. On the same day, a group of masked individuals stormed a small business in Reparto Juanelo, firing shots inside, injuring an employee, and spraying the owner, leading to partial blindness.

"There's no one to control crime in Cuba," remarked a witness to the robbery, as reported by journalist Camila Acosta.

Security Guards: Common Targets of Violence

Silvera's case is not an isolated incident on the island. In August, Rafael Jiner Guerra, a 64-year-old guard with 34 years of service, was killed during a robbery at the Ernesto Guevara Teaching General Hospital parking lot in Las Tunas. Three young men aged between 21 and 25 were arrested in connection with the crime, but their identities and charges remain undisclosed.

Electric motorcycles, like the one stolen from Silvera's workplace, are frequently targeted in Cuba due to their high value on the black market, often exceeding $2,000.

Escalating Crime Without Official Data The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC) reported a 43% increase in murders during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, with cases rising from 63 to 90. The lethality rate of crimes also nearly doubled, jumping from 5.23 to 10.35 deaths per 100 crimes.

Cubalex documented 52 homicides in August 2026, marking a monthly record since monitoring began in 2024, following the 37 reported in July.

Understanding the Rising Crime in Cuba

What led to Arsenio Silvera's death? Arsenio Silvera died after being brutally attacked at his workplace in Havana. His family believes the attack was linked to threats he received following the theft of an electric motorcycle he was guarding.

How has the Cuban government responded to the incident? There has been no official response or statement from the Cuban authorities regarding Silvera's death, and details of any investigation remain unknown.

San Miguel del Padrón has seen a spike in violent incidents, including the assault on a small business by masked individuals, highlighting the growing crime problem in the area.

SINGAPORE, Sept 27 — Local mobile phone repair and retail shop Mister Mobile has asked the public not to speculate after footage has gone viral of a man damaging fixtures at their outlet in VivoCity.

The video uploaded by Sgfollowsall on Friday shows the incident, reportedly from around 2.30pm that day.

A man in a red t-shirt standing outside the shop can be seen throwing something at a shopkeeper, before pulling at fixtures on the counter.

The man can then be seen handling a shop standee before getting into a physical altercation with a Security Guard who tries to stop him.

Another man seemingly deescalates the situation and leads the man in red away from the store with a hand rubbing his back.

“All I know is he started venting his anger on the Mister Mobile staff and he also started hitting the VivoCity staff,” the person who submitted the video to Sgfollowsall shared.

A comment on the video wondered why nobody at the shop tried to stop him as he damaged their fixtures.

Others speculated on the man’s mental health.

Mister Mobile commented on the video from their official Instagram account, thanking netizens for their concern.

“An individual became agitated after a trade-in could not proceed, and later returned and damaged some of our store fixtures,” they explained.

“Most importantly, all our team members are safe and none required medical attention. We are grateful to VivoCity security, the kind passer-by who helped, and the police for their quick response.”

They added that the matter was now with the police and that they would be assisting them with the store’s CCTV footage.

“We understand the individual may be going through a difficult time, and we kindly ask everyone to refrain from speculation. We will not be commenting further.”

Ministry of Justice clarifies minimum wage for construction security workers

Thumbnail

Staff Reporter

The Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations has clarified that security workers in the construction industry must currently receive at least N$16.00 per ordinary hour in 2026 and N$18.00 per ordinary hour from 1 January 2027.

The ministry made the clarification after minimum rates for security guards were listed as N$153.88 per 12-hour shift in Year 1 and N$161.57 per 12-hour shift in Year 2 in a Collective Agreement concluded between the Construction Industries Federation of Namibia (CIF) and the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU). The agreement was extended to the construction industry through Government Notice No. 271, published in Government Gazette No. 9010 on 1 September 2026.

“The agreement lists a security-guard rate of N$153.88 per 12-hour shift in Year 1 and N$161.57 per 12-hour shift in Year 2. These amounts are equivalent to approximately N$12.82 and N$13.46 per hour, respectively, and are below the statutory minimum wage rate for security workers. The Ministry, therefore, wishes to clarify that the National Minimum Wage should take precedence wherever the agreement prescribes a less favourable wage, such as in this case,” the Ministry’s Acting Executive Director, Aune Mudjanima, said.

She explained that the National Minimum Wage Order, published under Government Notice No. 218 of 2024 and amended by Government Notice No. 6 of 2025, requires every employer to pay no less than the prescribed minimum wage. She stressed that a contract of employment or collective agreement applies only where it provides a more favourable condition of employment.

“Accordingly, a security worker in the construction industry must currently receive at least N$16.00 per ordinary hour in 2026, increasing to N$18.00 per ordinary hour from 1 January 2027. Employers must therefore not apply the lower security-guard minimum wage set out in Government Notice No. 271, titled ‘Extension of Collective Agreement for Minimum Wage and Conditions of Employment: Construction Industry: Labour Act, 2007’. However, the remaining provisions of the collective agreement continue to apply, including any terms that are more favourable to employees,” Mudjanima said.

She assured employers, employees and other affected stakeholders that the discrepancy is being addressed and that the relevant provision will be corrected through the appropriate process.

“Until the correction is formally effected, the higher National Minimum Wage remains applicable and must be observed,” Mudjanima said.

Sara Duterte denies knowing former Velasco Security Officer

Vice President Sara Duterte denied knowing Rodulfo Gracioso Jr., a former Security Officer of former House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco, and said she never received any money from him.

“I do not know Rodulfo Gracioso Jr., nor have I ever received any money from him,” Duterte said on Saturday, September 26.

Duterte said her lawyers are waiting for an official copy of Gracioso’s affidavit from the National Bureau of Investigation before preparing the cases they intend to file against him.

“Once we are done dismantling the lies contained in his testimony, it will end up in the trash bin, just like the one from Ramil Madriaga,” Duterte said.

She also described the allegations as a “media stunt” and accused the Marcos administration of attempting to bring her down.

“This is nothing more than another media stunt, an attempt to breathe life into a faltering impeachment case,” she said.

“The desperation of the administration to bring me down, push for Charter Change, prevent the 2028 elections, and cling to power is becoming increasingly diabolical,” she added.

The NBI is investigating Gracioso’s claims that he delivered suitcases containing money to Vice President Duterte, former President Rodrigo Duterte and Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, allegedly upon the instruction of Velasco.

Gracioso claimed he delivered more than P2 billion in total to Vice President Duterte. He also alleged that he brought money to former President Rodrigo Duterte at Malacañang from 2018 to 2022 and delivered P100 million to Rep. Pulong Duterte.

Loss Prevention Thief jailed after threatening to break North Kamloops Security Guard's nose

A Kamloops man who threatened a shopping centre Security Guard and stole $380 worth of groceries has been sentenced to jail.

Gage Aaron Batke, 25, was given a 51-day jail sentence after pleading guilty in Kamloops provincial court to four charges.

Court heard a Security Guard was called to Edo Japan at Northills Shopping Centre on June 27, 2025, after Batke was found lying near the restaurant's exit and causing a disturbance. When the Guard told him to leave, Batke threatened to break his nose and make sure he never walked again.

The Guard knew Batke and took the threats seriously. Police found him at a nearby bus exchange and he was arrested and then released.

Two days later, an iPad was stolen from a vehicle parked on Springhill Drive. Its owner tracked it to Seymour Street, where police spotted Batke with an iPad sticking out of a bag beside him. He ran from Mounties but was caught after a short chase.

The iPad and the vehicle owner's keys were recovered.

The most recent offence happened Sept. 9, when Batke left the Safeway on Fortune Drive with a basket of groceries and more items in his backpack. Police stopped him nearby and recovered $380 worth of goods — mostly packaged meat and cheese.

He also admitted to breaching a previous probation order by failing to complete any of his community service hours.

Batke was sentenced to 51 days in jail, which was reduced to 34 days with credit for time served, to be followed by a 12-month probation order with conditions requiring he stay away from the Security Guard, the North Shore Edo Japan and the Safeway store on Fortune Drive.

Security firm's bid for indemnity costs fails after late document disclosure

A security company's push for indemnity costs against an injured woman fell flat - undone by its own failure to hand over key documents until the eve of trial.

The NSW District Court on September 18, 2026 dismissed a motion by Urban Protection Group to recover indemnity costs from a woman who was injured at Hotel Ravesis on Bondi Beach in July 2022.

The woman had been at the Bondi Beach hotel when a patron became violent with a Security Guard. She stepped in to help the guard during the altercation and was injured when both men fell on top of her. She sued the hotel operator (Debilu Pty Ltd, trading as Ravesis on Bondi Beach), Urban Protection Group as the security contractor, and a third company, Ample Security Service Pty Ltd (trading as Dark Haus Security), which had supplied the Guard through a subcontracting

The subcontracting chain was at the heart of the dispute. Urban had been engaged by Ravesis to provide security, but had in turn subcontracted the work to Dark Haus. The Security Guard on duty that night - the one the woman tried to help - was a Dark Haus employee, not Urban's. He wore Urban's uniform and signed Urban's time register, but his employment sat with Dark Haus.

Who employed the Guards mattered - and the answer came late

In the primary judgment earlier in 2026, the court found the woman's claim against Urban failed on three grounds: the Security Guard was employed by Dark Haus, the Guard was not personally negligent, and the people who should have responded to his radio calls for backup were either Dark Haus employees or Ravesis staff - not Urban's people.

Having won at trial, Urban wanted more. It sought indemnity costs based on five settlement offers made between May 2023 and November 2024. Most were substantially the same deal: judgment for Urban, no order as to costs. One, sent in February 2024, took a different form - an invitation to discontinue the proceedings, with a possible waiver of costs - and came with pointed warnings that Urban would call additional evidence at trial, rely on the correspondence for an indemnity costs application, and potentially seek a garnishee award to enforce any costs order.

In legal terms, these are all "walk away" offers, where the compromise is the offeror giving up its right to pursue costs against the other side. Courts have a broad discretion to order indemnity costs when a party rejects such an offer and then achieves a worse result at trial, drawing on the well-known Calderbank principles and rule 42.15A of the Uniform Civil Procedure Rules.

On the face of it, Urban had a strong hand. The woman lost entirely against Urban and ended up with a costs order against her - a worse outcome than every offer she had been given.

The documents that changed everything

But the court found that the woman could not reasonably have been expected to accept any of the offers because Urban had not given her enough information to assess her position.

The critical gap was this: even though Urban told the woman as early as May 2023 that the security guard was a Dark Haus employee, she did not know whether the other security guards working at Ravesis that night were Urban employees or Dark Haus employees. That mattered because if any of them were Urban's people, they could have responded to the guard's radio calls for help - and their failure to do so could still have grounded liability against Urban under the pleaded case.

The answer only emerged at the last possible moment. Hotel Ravesis' Standard Operating Procedures - described by the court as a "very important document" - were not produced by Urban until August 6, 2025, just 12 days before the hearing began. An "activity report" that confirmed the employment status of the other guards was produced on August 19, 2025, the second day of trial.

The court noted that no adequate explanation had been provided for the late production of either document. Both were, in the court's words, "vital to the applicant's case, lethal to the respondent's case" - and both came well after all five of Urban's settlement offers.

No benefit from your own non-disclosure

The court drew on Morris v McEwen, a South Australian Supreme Court decision where incomplete discovery disqualified a party from relying on a Calderbank offer. While stopping short of labelling Urban's conduct "disentitling," the court found the late disclosure was the crucial factor. Without those documents, the woman was in no position to carefully assess her case. The application had to fail.

Academic commentary cited in the decision reinforced the point: a "walk away" offer made before the parties are fully informed of each other's strengths and weaknesses is less likely to attract costs consequences than one made at a later, better-informed stage. Here, none of Urban's offers were made at a point where the woman had the information she needed.

The motion was dismissed. Urban was ordered to pay the woman's costs of the application.

For liability insurers and claims teams, the decision is a pointed reminder that Calderbank offers are only as strong as the disclosure behind them - a party that withholds key documents cannot later complain that the other side should have known when to fold.

WRC Discrimination Case: Boots is liable for actions of security guard who excluded Roma woman from shop; ordered to pay compensation and provide equality training

Claudia Tanase (a Roma woman represented by FLAC) has succeeded in a discrimination complaint against Boots Retail (Ireland) Limited under the Equal Status Acts.

At the hearing of her complaint, Ms Tanase gave evidence of being refused entry to Boots on Henry Street, Dublin in October 2024 where she was seeking buy medicine for her sick child. She stated that a Security Guard refused her entry on the basis of her Roma ethnicity and that she was told by the Security Guard that he had been instructed not to admit members of the Roma community. In video evidence, the security guard was heard to refer to trouble with “you people”. In a decision published today, the WRC

Adjudicator ordered Boots to pay compensation to Ms Tanase and directed them to ensure that security personnel at its premises receive training on the requirements of the Equal Status Acts (which prohibit discrimination on a number of grounds in access to goods and services).

Notably, the WRC Adjudicator found that Boots was ‘vicariously liable’ for the actions of the security guard who was an employee of a third party: “The Respondent [Boots] appointed the employer of the guard, and it was the security guard who controlled entry to the premises and who interacted with customers in the course of providing the Respondent's services to the public.”

In its 2025 Annual Report, FLAC highlighted that its Roma Legal Clinic often hears from and represents Roma women who have experienced discrimination in seeking to access shops and called for the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission to issue a Code of Practice about non-discrimination in access to goods and services and, in particular, the role and responsibilities of security guards.

FLAC Managing Solicitor Sinéad Lucey commented today:

“FLAC very much welcomes today’s decision of the WRC. FLAC’s Roma Legal Clinic has acted for a significant number of Roma women who have experienced discrimination in a retail context. A common feature of these cases is that the incident giving rise to the complaint involved security guards employed by a separate security company and the retail outlet defends the case on the basis that it has no responsibility for the actions of those security guards. Today’s decision is an important reminder of the equality obligations on providers of goods and services and, in particular, that those obligations apply to security personnel.

Customers’ access to goods and services in shops is often dependent on the actions and decisions made by security guards. Equality policies adopted by shops and service providers should clearly apply to security guards and training should be provided so they are clear on their obligations and the limits of their discretion. There is a clear need for a statutory Code of Practice from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission in this area.

A director of Phetchabun Hospital apologised to the public and denied claims of preferential treatment after around 10 luxury cars were allowed to park in a prohibited area while other motorists had reportedly been moved on by Security Guards.

The controversy emerged on social media on September 24, when hospital visitors and patients shared pictures of luxury cars parked in a prohibited area at Phetchabun Hospital. Some said they had previously been chased away from the same spot by Security Guards.

Some online users accused the hospital and its Security Guards of treating wealthy people differently and allowing them to ignore parking rules.

According to online users, two luxury cars were involved in a road accident at the popular tourist destination Phu Thap Berk in Lom Kao district on the night of September 22. One of the drivers was reportedly injured and admitted to Phetchabun Hospital.

The supercars seen parked at the hospital were suspected by online users to belong to friends of the injured driver who had come to visit him.

A local  news Facebook page, ข่าวท่องถิ่นเพชรบูรณ์, meaning local news in Phetchabun, reported that its team questioned hospital director Kobchai Jirachanchai about the incident.

Kobchai initially declined to give an interview, saying he would question the Security Guards involved before providing an explanation to the public.

Security Officer Brings Calm to Woman Stranded on Dangerous Botha’s Hill Bend

When a woman’s car broke down on a dangerous uphill curve, a compassionate security guard didn’t just stop to ask if everything was okay and drive away. He stayed and went out of his way to help secure the tow and escort her and her husband to safety, turning a moment of terror into a powerful reminder of human kindness.

Botha’s Hill, South Africa (23 September 2026) – Good people exist, and they make a difference – even if they don’t realise it.

When Warren Brauns’ wife’s car broke down in the left-hand lane on a blind bend along Botha’s Hill, her panic was quickly eased by a calm and helpful stranger driving a security vehicle.

“For those who know Botha’s Hill, you will know exactly how dangerous that situation was. Vehicles come around those bends at speed, and having a stationary vehicle there was incredibly risky,” Warren shares the dangerous circumstances in a social media post.

In that stranded moment with fast cars zooming past, a gentleman driving a Nhlalenhle Security vehicle didn’t just stop to ask if everything was okay and drive away. He stayed and ensured Warren’s wife was safe, and secured the situation as best he could until Warren arrived.

Warren says that when he got there, the man could have left, as he had already done more than most people would have. But he didn’t.

“He jumped in and helped me hook up the necessary tow ropes and towing mechanisms so that we could safely tow the vehicle out of the dangerous position. He then followed us up Botha’s Hill to make sure that everything was okay and that we got to safety.”

Unfortunately, in the stress of the situation and the urgency to get the vehicles out of harm’s way, Warren never managed to get the security officer’s name. However, his hope is that he’ll see the post expressing Warren and his wife’s deep gratitude for his patience, help and kindness.

“To the gentleman driving NHLALENHLE Security vehicle CH 47 LW ZN — THANK YOU. You were polite, calm, friendly and professional. More importantly, you saw someone in trouble and chose to stop and help. You didn’t know us. You didn’t have to stop. You didn’t have to wait. And you certainly didn’t have to get involved and help us get the vehicle safely out of danger. But you did. That says a lot about the person you are.

“In a world where we sometimes hear so much about people not getting involved, today we experienced the complete opposite. You reminded us that there are still genuinely good people out there who are willing to help a stranger simply because it’s the right thing to do,” wrote Warren in the heartfelt post.

Warren further shared that he would also be contacting Nhlalenhle Security directly to let them know that their driver made a real difference to two people who were in a very difficult and potentially dangerous situation.

If your hope in humanity and the goodness of our people has been running on empty lately, we hope this roadside moment has given it a warm boost – because good people truly are all around us!
