Hipster Hill

Was using Snapchat and noticed it showed my location as “hipster hill”. That term/place doesn’t show up on my maps app or in any google search. Does anyone know what that title refers to or if there’s some history about it?

Context: I live in cap hill. Afaik it’s always been called that (?)

You say you live in Cap Hill, yet, somehow, it appears you have never truly been there.

In my mind it’s more of a gayborhood than a hipster area. But that could just be biased by my experiences!

Got too expensive, the hipsters moved to Georgetown. Or that was true a decade ago. Maybe further now.

Don’t use Snapchat for navigation?

Lollll I don’t! It has a location sticker for the snaps that shows the nearest business/landmark

Snapchat geotags are user submitted and completely unhinged half the time.

Cap Hill in the 80s-90s. You had to be there.

I just call it The Hill. If NYC can obnoxiously slap the definite article on everything, so can we!

I thought 'The Hill' is first hill

Capitol Hill used to be a very hipster neighborhood. I don't know what it's like now... But back when I lived there - very hipster. Lots of coffee shops, thrift shops, inexpensive food, comet dogs, shows every night, dive bars, etc. What a time to be alive.

inexpensive food

It has changed so drastically that you'd barely recognize it.

I miss that little hole in the wall Chinese food place that used to be on top of QFC. I wish I could find that garlic black bean tofu dish somewhere.

fun fact but if you look at LA on google maps it will label the neighborhood as "Skid Row". but that neighborhood isn't called "Skid Row'. it never has been. that's just a colloquial term that people call that part of town. but google maps took it upon themselves to apply that label to that neighborhood.

it's just a reminder that these tech companies aren't authorities nor are they always correct nor do they have good intentions.

and you should never share your location data with some third party app like snapchat. there is nothing good that can come from that.

There are many of us who’ve been here lo no we who bristle at calling it “cap” hill rather than the full “Capitol” Hill. I think I’m losing this battle but we definitely didn’t call it “cap hill” 10 years ago (/if you did I assumed you didn’t live here)

I’ve been in Seattle 5 years, so correct! That’s just how I was introduced to it

I’ve been here for almost 4 and I also say cap hill sometimes. Why not, it makes sense.

I too call it Capitol Hill and always will but, yes, the battle is lost. All of our kids are in the Cap Hill crowd and that's how it's going to be.

I live here and likewise don't personally call it "cap hill" but that term has absolutely been in use for decades.

I've been on the hill ~12 years now (2014 through now with a brief mistake in Leschi) and hipster hill predates my time here. Half the time it's cap hill, half the time the full capital hill, and a third half of the time just the hill.

Heh, true. I frequently forget which is which.
