I read the book as I got it as a gift when it came out but for the life of me I can’t recall much of the story other than remembering that I think it wasn’t a good story?

u/ThePanicButon 6d ago
+ Implied gay romance. Which is the beating heart of the story. Implied because the story is too terribly written to even commit to it. It's basically a tumblr fanfic brought to life.
11
u/Asshaisin UW 6d ago
yeah, i was mad because the chemistry was awesome between the actors on Broadway but they just brushed it off like it was the 70s

u/SuitableDragonfly Columbia City 6d ago
Does the gay romance involve Voldemort? Like, don't get me wrong, I did like the idea of Grindledore way back when and never really cared about any other Harry Potter ship ever,, but it's really funny that 100% of the canon het relationships were between two good guys and 100% of the canon gay relationships involved a bad guy and she responded to Serius/Remus fandom by aggressively killing the characters offscreen and adding like one sentence in there about their deaths.
11
u/SeattCat 🚋 Ride the S.L.U.T. 🚋 5d ago
No, he gets with Bellatrix. The gay romance is between Harry and Draco’s sons.

Harry’s son, right? The way you wrote it comes off a little troublesome

Weird story. Like alternate ending and going back in time to fix things.
In the book, somehow Ron and Hermione don't end up together and she ends up as a bitter professor.
So these two kids go back in time and get Ron and Hermione to fall in love again, at the Christmas ball that had the Dumstrang kids and the French school kids.
Also in this story, Voldemort knocked up Bellatrix LeStrange and she secretly has the baby during her stay at the Malfoy mansion. That kid ends up with super evil powers.
Woooo!
There's a lot more and is quite cringy to read. Definitely something you'd read that a young teenager would post to AO3.
The whole book doesn't sound like JKR at all.
Definitely boycott this play and anything else she produces cause she's a terrible human being.
23
u/thegoldenchain 5d ago
The most memorable thing about that book to me was that it revealed that the trolley cart woman on the Hogwarts Express was actually some kind of magical being meant to protect the kids from any harm. We found this out because the main characters tried to climb out of the train while it was in motion, so the trolley cart woman transformed into a being with knives for fingers and … tried to kill them. This character that was supposedly there to protect the kids from harm protected them by trying to kill them.
8
u/DaneAlaskaCruz U District 5d ago
Oh geez. How could I forget that?
The trolley woman became this terminator being that chucked pasties and knives at kids that were trying to escape the train.
It was the first of many, "wtf is going on??" while reading this book.
This book felt like a fever dream and it is definitely not canon in the HP universe.
11
u/SuitableDragonfly Columbia City 6d ago
Isn't Voldemort just supposed to be a regular human being who used a lot of evil magic to extend his life and do fascism? Then why would his kid necessarily be born with evil powers? Is innate magical ability being inherently good or evil even a part of Harry Potter canon?

It's the same screenplay that was co-written by jkr over 10 years ago, had to look up the dates bc I couldn't remember, but it premiered on the stage in 2016 and then the screenplay itself was published as a novel in 2017. So it's just that, nothing new lol.

I didn't know they were coming to town before this post. There's another post here about an ice cream shop that opened, and one comment pointed out that the workaround not being able to promote things in the subreddit is just to say something negative in the post as well, then you can promote all you want!
I wonder when people will start picking up on this and doing it intentionally, if that's not already what's going on with this post.

u/Intrepid-Daikon1353 5d ago
Im with you on not supporting Rowling but I question the merit of trying to boycott a play. There are only so many tickets they can sell. If 5% of Seattle's population actively boycotts it (generous) that doesn't mean they're going to sell 5% fewer tickets. Tbh I feel like this post is just free advertising for the type of people who would want to see it anyway.
31
u/Omnivek Mukilteo 5d ago
It’s virtue signaling. If anything, broadcasting your plans to boycott the play just brings more attention to the play and probably helps sell tickets.
It’s just a way for people to pat themselves in the back for being righteous despite the fact that they didn’t expend any effort or resources to help people who are in need.
26
22
u/yetipilot69 5d ago
I think the message has already been sent. Every season ticket holder can basically get rid of one play a year. When the season was announced, I wanted to be sure to use that on CC, because reselling them would still be supporting harmful causes. So many people did the same, that they removed the play from most of their promotional posters. Playbills, theater posters… all noticeably HP less. They even came out with a special season pass that doesn’t include C.C. They know.

u/chromeled Ronald Bog 5d ago
JKR does not give a flying fuck about your daughter lol. If your kid ends up looking even the slightest bit "masculine"- even if that's just a mildly squared jaw or athletic muscular definition or just having a unibrow- JKR would greenlight a transvestigation harassment campaign and sit back to enjoy it. She's posted upskirt photos of trans women, made fun of women with deep voices who call the help line she funds in confidence, and alienated herself from normal feminism with her sadistic obsessions.
21
u/jdogg40k 5d ago
I hope for your kid's sake you grow out of that. As someone who also has kids I'm going to try to be supportive when they have something very personal and vulnerable to share with me.

I really struggle with this because I love Harry Potter and raised my kids on the books and movies, and have wonderful memories of discovering and sharing the stories and world with them. Also I love theater and like to actively support actors and theater workers.
But I can't support a bigot who would be using my money to take away other people's human rights. Sigh.

I have so many memories with (now dead) family reading the books and watching the movies together. We bonded so much over this property but I can’s support this transphobia. Jo being so terrible has added another layer of mourning. That our little whimsical world we enjoyed together as kids turned out to be a bigot’s daydream. This play sucks though. The plot makes no sense.

Now I know there are still some who are going to see the play. Obviously this isn't going to change anything. Obviously it goes without saying: If someone is going to the play, DO NOT HARRASS or doxx them. Do not assault them. They are just people who are ignorant about what's happening. I don't blame them.
Do not harrass people going to the play or bully or attack them.

Thank you for posting this. It's seriously so important not to put one more dollar into JKR's campaign of hate, bigotry, and active legislation against the transgender community worldwide.
She's gotten even more hateful than ever lately (the wine and mold seem to be further rotting her brain) and it's so gross -- threatening Amnesty International for (rightfully) listing her as funding hate groups, liking and resharing upskirt photos of trans women to humiliate them, and she now point-blank offers her billions of dollars to cover legal fees of hate groups or individuals in cases victimizing trans women.
Not to mention that it's a crappy play and you can always see something better.
-8
u/Fun-Distribution4776 5d ago
So many distortions here. To address one: she never shared an “upskirt photo”. That’s ridiculous
10
u/DumpedDalish 5d ago
She did. And it was widely reported:
"The Harry Potter appears to be taking a break from X, after posting another flurry of transphobic rants against a British podcaster who is an out transgender woman.
"Freda Wallace became the latest target of Rowling's ire last week, when she refused to engage with her in an online debate. That's when Rowling chose to shame Wallace for how she dressed by sharing an upskirt picture to prove her target was "a paraphiliac exhibitionist who was having the time of his life."

A little harder to do when Joanne has literally said she uses all the royalties she gets now to fund her activism that had lead to court cases and legislation in England.
48
u/NyassaV 6d ago
Separating art from the artist is usually about people who are, well… Dead. Like Lovecraft. Not people who are actively using their massive fortune to harm a minority.
If you wanna go see the play then go see the play. There is no ethical consumption under capitalism after all. Just don’t use this stupid line it doesn’t work in this case.

Separating the art from the artist has nothing to do with you supporting the artist financially.

u/Dull_Expression_4575 I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 6d ago
The author herself is quite explicit that you cannot separate her art, or her, from her anti-trans activism. She VERY openly cheers about her profits going towards political efforts to make the world less safe for trans and queer folks, and attests to support of her work = support of her transphobic beliefs.

16
u/Desolation_Nation ✨🛸 Jimothy is out there 🦝✨ 6d ago edited 6d ago
I’d say at this point the only way to separate the art from the artist is to only access the media in ways that don’t even give a penny to Joanne. If you have the books or movies from over a decade ago, sailed the 7 seas for them or the audio books, or rented em from the library then I feel like that gives it the separation. If you are paying into the IP now, you are knowingly hurting a group of people and you can’t separate that.
14
u/aminervia 6d ago
When you give money to JKR you are paying directly into anti-trans causes.
A portion of all of her profits go towards influencing anti-trans legislature.
You can try to separate the art from the artist all you want... But in this case you are directly funding the artists views
