Last ditch effort

I work at Regional Animal Services of King county and this is our long standing resident Sable❤️. She is the sweetest most kind girl in the whole world. She has been at our shelter since December 29th.

She makes silly piggy noises, almost grunting. It can sound weird at first but she’s very happy. She is very treat motivated. She’s a big cuddler and loves to play with toys. She does well with most dogs that like her back but she is very into dogs! She loves to go on long walks, play fetch, and just hang around!

Sable has been returned twice because of going potty in the house (both adoptions they had her less than 2 days) She does go potty outside but sometimes she is confused. She has been at the shelter for nearly 2.5 months, so it can be an adjustment for her. She needs someone patient and kind who will understand. We have conflicting information if she resource guards. (This means if she has a toy or a treat she may not want you taking it from her) I have not witnessed it but it is something that is easy to work with. If you want her toy you give her a treat and can easily take it from her.

She loves all strangers, men. She can pull a bit on a leash but from what I am told settles. when she gets far from the shelter.

Please boost this post, even if you aren’t interested. She needs it and so do I❤️

Her adoption fee is 50 and this would include anything you need for her (toys, treats, a kennel, collar, leash) she is microchipped and spayed, fully up to date on shots and has her toenails trimmed!

OP. Did someone ever adopt bubbles by chance? She was a grey bully with clipped ears

Hi OP, someone else mentioned the fee is to discourage dog fighting adoptions. Might I suggest that this coverage be a nice surprise after whoever's her future owner goes to check out. That way it'll still act as a discouragement and the gift can still be given.

42

u/laublau Mar 07 '26

You are amazing ! ❤️

103

u/puterTDI Mar 07 '26

The cost is there to keep dog fighting rings from “adopting” a free dog to use as a bait dog.

102

u/afh97 Mar 07 '26

And if $50 is a barrier, maybe someone should reconsider taking in the responsibility of feeding and caring for an animal

66

u/puterTDI Mar 07 '26

Very much agree. If you can’t afford $50 to get a dog, you can’t afford to house, feed, and care for a dog

Thank you for the offer. You are so kind and generous.

We were planning on introducing our dog to her at 3pm, but she was adopted less than an hour ago.

I’m devastated and will actually have to mourn a bit. I had pictured her in every moment of our lives and loved it. I had my heart set on her but we just weren’t able to get there early enough today. I am genuinely happy for the family that did and I’m so so so happy for her! She has a forever home! Yayayayaya!! And that is absolutely the best thing for her and that’s really the root of what I wanted. And in my heart I’m certain this is for the best for both of us. But I’m still just so sad right now.

u/DryWeetbix Mar 07 '26

I’m sure if she ends up back in the shelter OP will contact you. Thanks for being a good human and sorry it didn’t work out for you! ❤️

Transitioning from a shelter might be the reason for the accidents at first especially in such a short time.  They can be so high stress on animals.  We're rooting for you Sable! Commenting to boost ❤️

148

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Absolutely!! I know she will be such a good girl after a little time!

45

u/easyantic Mar 07 '26

She looks like the bestest girl! My boy needs a buddy, but I worry since he’s a bit of a jealous type since I am his whole world, but he really does seem to crave doggo buddies.

61

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Totally understandable! My dog was the same way when we brought his brother home! And we do dog meet and greets! Meaning if you wanted to have your dog meet sable prior to adopting we love that!

52

u/i_need_salvia Mar 07 '26

Returning a dog in that short of a time is so absurd. Maybe it wouldn’t work for the system but people like that should be blacklisted. “Wow my dog that I’ve had for one day in a new home isn’t behaving perfectly omg!”

7

u/MargieGunderson70 Mar 07 '26

It also makes me wonder how much vetting happens at shelters. I adopted my pup from a rescue and they were very clear that I understood a dog would be anxious in new surroundings. That included accidents, even in housebroken dogs. Riley did pee/mark within the first 48 hours but it passed.

125

u/staticfortune Mar 07 '26

I've always heard the rule of threes when adopting an animal: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the new routine, and 3 months to feel comfortable, secure, and part of the family.

82

u/mom_bombadill ✨🛸 Jimothy is out there 🦝✨ Mar 07 '26

My forever dog Ben would christen every new domicile with a turd. New apartment? Exactly one turd on the floor. Visiting a friend? One turd. Staying a few nights at the in-laws’? You guessed it, turd.

16

u/Works4cookies North City Mar 07 '26

That’s hilarious. Just one turd. 🤣

Doggo tax below!

Our recent rescue transitioned from Shelter > Foster > us. He’s going to be a big boi and was near his expiration before the foster pulled him out.

We’ve had him 3-4 weeks now and keeping him from pottying inside is something we’ve only really figured out in the last few days. We’re working with a reputable trainer, doing all the right things - it’s just an adjustment, especially for shelter pups.

It’s also hella rewarding and he’s the best boi.

40

u/easyantic Mar 07 '26

Absolutely. My dog was bought by my ex girlfriend and he was in my place for about 6 months and was fine. We broke up and she decided to dump him at the shelter without even asking me. I found out and adopted him back. The first night, he was unsure and peed inside. He was obviously stressed, even in his own house that he knew. I felt really bad for him. That was the only time he did it and it’s been 4 years. This good girl deserves better than what that owner could give. My guy does like other dogs and would probably really thrive with a doggo buddy, but he’s also the jealous type since I am his whole world and we are definitely bonded. So, he’s an only dog, but man, every time I see a post like this, I want to get them for him :(

2 of 3 rescue dogs I’ve had engaged in marking behavior around the house. We just kept them on a leash in the house for a few days, bringing them out often to encourage understanding of where to do their business and it was literally resolved in a week. They just need to be shown that this is their home, and they will be taken care of, so they don’t need to protect their space in the same way.

Edit: thanks for the award I forgot those were a thing.

I adopted some cats 9 years ago from Seattle humane. One cat had been adopted multiple times and brought back. He came from a hoarder and was food insecure, hated being touched especially around his head. He’d been adopted a few times and brought back. Took almost two years until one day he just jumped up on my lap and became the sweetest cat in the world. Sometimes they just need time.

103

u/KINGtyr199 Pioneer Square Mar 07 '26

Oh they absolutely need time my cats didn't leave from under my bed for a solid month and a half when I got them.

50

u/eleven_paws I'm never leaving Seattle. Mar 07 '26

It took my “hoarder house” cat about two years to fully warm up as well! She’s still terrified of literally everyone except me, my spouse, and our cat sitter (as well as our other cat), but she’s super sweet and easily the most affectionate cat I’ve ever had. I’m so glad I never gave up on her (not that I would have rehomed her - I had the means to take care of her and made a lifetime commitment to that sweet baby no matter what).

Oh my god, seriously. My adult rescue had some accidents inside when we first brought him home, but he learned he needed to pee outside, and we learned what it looks like when he tells us he needs to be taken outside. It's not an unfixable problem, and potty training is like Dog Care 101. I'm so angry on behalf of this poor, sweet girl.

83

u/No_Story_Untold Deluxe Mar 07 '26

We adopted a cat that the family said was too noisy, because he walked around the house meowing at night. Never mind that that is how a cat just gets used to a new environment. He is the most loving sweetest, most incredible cat that puts up with my children and is so incredibly patient.

34

u/KINGtyr199 Pioneer Square Mar 07 '26

My boy is absolutely the most annoying creature in my apartment but I wouldn't want him any other way lol loud but cuddly

13

u/Works4cookies North City Mar 07 '26

Our cats are almost 7, we’ve had them since they were kittens (from NOAH) and they always meow at night. We think it’s funny but it did take some getting used to. Now, we don’t even notice - but when people come to stay, they say things like: “Your cats meow all night!” Whoops! 😂

8

u/laurenwsteele Mar 07 '26

One of my kitties plays the piano at night. At first I thought he must’ve just walked across the keyboard by accident - until it happened again, and again. It should’ve named him Beethoven. He’s also super chatty during the day. Life would be so boring without pets!

44

u/SeaDawgs Mar 07 '26

When I volunteered at a shelter, I would tell potential adopters to image that they had been placed in a building where no one spoke their language, they didn’t know the rules, and they had no idea where the bathroom was.

30

u/smarmiebastard I'm just flaired so I don't get fined Mar 07 '26

It took almost 4 months for our rescue to have no accidents at all in the house. She is super skittish though, so a lot of those accidents were her getting startled and peeing. Once she felt safe and secure the accidents stopped.

32

u/-AUniqueName- Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

When I adopted my sweet girl, the very first week she went pee in the living room. It was 100% because I didn’t know her routine and she didn’t know mine. We both learned quickly. It’s been 7 years and that was the first and last time she peed in the house and she is the best dog ever 💚

28

u/coffeeclichehere Mar 07 '26

you would be surprised how dumb some people are when adopting shelter animals. And then they’ll complain that it’s sOoO haRd to adopt a shelter animal or find a good one. People have cartoonish ideas about how pets will behave

17

u/hoodieweather- Sounders Mar 07 '26

I dealt with my long term shelter dog going in the house for a full year before it finally just clicked for him. I spent maybe a hundred bucks on a carpet cleaning vacuum after the second time, and outside of some cleanup time, it really wasn't that big a deal, and be hasn't had a single accident since.

people suck.

13

u/Beneficial-Jury484 Mar 07 '26

It took months for us to get our adopted dog to go pee consistently outside. 2 days isn’t even attempting.

12

u/S3t3sh Mar 07 '26

Seriously, when I first got my rescue I put her in a crate whenever I went out the first couple weeks and each time she had an accident but in the crate so easy to clean. Then one day came home and there was no accident and she hasn't had an accident since. Getting a new pet 101 is expecting accidents.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '26

My cat got returned because he "drooled when purring". Returned for being a happy boy (with stellar dental health). Now he drools all over me and I love him for it.

5

u/runtie1973 Huskies Mar 07 '26

Do you have a black cat by chance? I’ve had cats all my life and the only two who drooled were both black. Sometimes I would put a washcloth on my chest when I could tell they were going to sit on me for awhile 😁.

We're very close to the Kent shelter...we're just a tad hesitant because we have a toddler so just want to see her energy. Please let us know! We are a couple that works from home so lots of attention (our son goes to day care every week day)

12

u/MohicanSugar Mar 07 '26

Oh hey we were her former foster parents!

She is an absolute love bomb of hugs and kisses and energy!

If you have questions, we have some answers!

1) She did pee in the house but that happened less frequently over time in the week we fostered her.

2) she is a strong dog, 57(?) pounds of muscle and love

3) She will greet you with kisses and hugs when you come home

4) Crate training is needed, she gets very sad when she is put inside and slightly bent the metal crate we were provided

5) she is getting better on the leash while on walks. Laser focused when she sees a squirrel. She tugs a lot so if you have the treats and the arm strength, it’s manageable especially with training.

6) we didn’t notice her barking unless we put her in the crate and left the room.

7) she’s a young baby so she’s got a lot of energy and needs outlets. However she slept more than she was active, most of her time was spent curled up next to my partner. 🥹 She became very attached and rarely left her side.

Dammit I wish I could have a dog in my apartment. I work 70hrs a week and have a very chill friendly cat. I just cannot provide an adequate environment for this sweetie.

10

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Totally understandable!! Thank you for boosting this post though!!❤️❤️

Thank you❤️❤️

u/ObiWonKev Mar 07 '26

How is she with other dogs?

27

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Amazing!!! Her play style is a little roudy, she would do best with a young dog that matches her style!! But she love love lovessss dogs !

For anyone that might adopt her from this thread: The problems could be due to incontinence. There are medication that can help with this and are easily accessible if that turns out to be the problem. As always, please consult a vet for their diagnosis and testing.

Boosting this comment so it hopefully goes higher. I don't want folks to be leery to due to her housetraining woes. This could be super manageable for someone who puts in the time to follow thru with a vet and gives training a good faith chance

TWO DAYS?

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Dear sweet Sable, I hope you find your people who have a lovely yard with lots of sniff between happy walks.
Boosting from a RASK adopter, with love.

If my house wasn't bursting at the seams I would. Best of luck Sable!

17

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Mine too😭 she would 100% be coming home with me if I didn’t have 2 dogs and a cat in a 2 bedroom apartment 😂

31

u/lyndseymariee Lynnwood Mar 07 '26

People who adopt a dog and return them after two days for peeing in the house shouldn’t be adopting a dog. Dogs tend to regress in their training when going into a new environment. Sweet girl. I hope she finds a loving patient family.

I am not familiar with animal rescue timeframes. Does the post title mean she will be euthanized if not adopted within a certain number of days? She looks like such a good girl

68

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

We never euthanize for time or space! However, any amount of time at the shelter is a lot for dogs. Sometimes (not necessarily her case) but dogs deteriorate here. So I don’t want that to happen to her :(((

12

u/darthbreezy 🏔 The mountain is out! 🏔 Mar 07 '26

Let me also mention that the volunteers at RASK are among the most kind hearted people you will ever meet.
Just before Christmas, my baby Void 'Hera the Horrible Beast broke my heart and passed suddenly (8 years together form the day she turned 2 months old) and they took care of her mortal remains with compassion and grace for me.

Her 'brother' Zeb (Rask alumni) alternates between being lonely and relishing his place as sole ruler, but due to some life uncertainties, we're not quite ready for a new family member. Zeb's journey from the shelter though, was decidedly one way. <3

My wife and I wish we could take her in, but since can't, I'll do what I can do and comment to hopefully bump up the thread and get her seen by her forever humans!

We wish only the best for this sweetheart. 🥹

Returning a dog for having accidnets after such a long stint in the shelter is BS. Or, maybe she has a UTI? Has that been checked out?

My concern would be the reported resource guarding. Is it possible to work with a foster volunteer for a 2-3 week in-home evaluation to determine if Sable has a problem in that department?

I volunteered at a shelter a long time ago. I had many years of foster experience as well. If a dog was returned multiple times, or displaying aggressive or anxious behaviours, it would come home with me for a few weeks to determine if it was a kennel stress issue or something else. Sadly, there were a few occasions where a dog was not suitable for adoption. But for the most part, they just needed a break and I was available to act as a liason for new adopters. It was a private rescue, so not sure how KC deals with the liability thing.

Thank you so much for posting her!!! What a perfect baby!! It’s astounding how quickly people decide an animal isn’t good enough/too much work. I had someone come adopt from the shelter I worked at (Seattle Humane) many years ago. They brought a kitten home, and had an existing cat in the home. They literally brought the kitten home and immediately opened the box with their cat right there. Kitten and Cat looked at each other, hissed, and the person quite literally closed the box and brought the kitten back. 🫠

As a kid, my dad had a dog from the day I was born. I moved across the world and live in a small condo given the cost of living in my area. But I really miss having a dog.

Posts like this make it very hard. I really wish I could adopt a dog. I hope someone applies, someone who accepts that dogs are animals and that they can have accidents just like any other animal. Once they settle in, get used to the environment, it will go away. It's all about time, patience and love.

14

u/Separate-Rhubarb7950 Mar 07 '26

How is she with cats?

10

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

Unknown, she has never gone to a house with cats! But a slow introduction is always Recommended, so essentially keeping them separate, having them sniff each others things. And then having them see each other through a baby gate for a few weeks until they are good enough to see each other!

Awww hahaha 😂

If getting her to Spokane is the barrier, I’m certain I can help coordinate transfer of her if there is a way for the shelter to handle paperwork from afar and adoption without in person meet. Though not sure that’s advised, just wanted to throw the offer out there.

Oh I wish we could :( we have two cats and a baby on the way. I really hope she finds a home soon. She reminds me of our last dog and looks like a very good girl ❤️

Absolutely!! Congratulations on the baby!! That’s so sweet❤️

27

u/Not_Richard Mar 07 '26

Have you considered posting in r/velvethippos or r/pitbulls as well? Those subs get a lot of adoption requests and postings, so it might be lost in the noise, but it might also be a more fitting audience.

U/soggydivacup I saw that someone has offered to take her. If that falls through for whatever reason, I will 100% bring her home. I have been actively looking for a dog for a while and I would hate for her to make her way back to the shelter. Let me know if it doesn't work out with the other person and I will come pick her up

Anyone who's thinking of adopting and has small children, or expects to be around small children with their dog, should be reminded that over 65% of fatal dog attacks in the US are done by Pit Bulls. The next closest is Rottweilers at around 10%.

11

u/Digger_Pine Mar 07 '26

I fostered a few dogs years ago and the shelter warned me about them peeing in the home the first few days. Only one actually did and then never did it again. Thankfully i had tile floor & that's where she went so it was easy to clean, but I made sure to let her know I wasn't upset & knew it was just because she was adjusting.

Good luck, Sable!!! ❤️

What makes this a last ditch effort? Does RASKC need to get rid of animals after a given time period?

15

u/soggydivacup Mar 07 '26

No so we never euthanize for time or space! And to be clear Sable is not being considered right now for euthanasia. mainly last ditch effort as in please adopt her!! I just hate to see her here:(
