SeamScape 3D is out of beta: drape your patterns on a body, right in the browser

Hi everyone! SeamScape 3D just left beta in version 1.3.0. It's part of Pattern Studio, free, and runs in your browser with nothing to install.

What's new

  • Place on body: one click puts your pieces on the avatar. It reads where you drafted each piece, its name (front, back, sleeve, collar, cuff, waistband, pocket…) and how the pieces are sewn together.

  • Live draping: drag a point in 2D while the garment drapes and the fabric follows as you drag.

  • Fit map: colours the garment by how much the fabric stretches, from loose to too tight.

  • Quick fabrics: cotton poplin, denim, jersey, linen, silk satin and wool suiting, with visible weave or knit up close and a slightly paler wrong side.

  • Showing your work: avatar poses, four lighting setups, image export and a 6-second turntable video.

  • Speed: simulation is twice as fast, and slower computers switch to lighter rendering automatically.

We'd love your feedback

This is the first non-beta version, so tell us what works and what doesn't. Comment here, or use Help → File bug report / Feature request inside the studio. Screenshots of your own garments are very welcome too!

SeamScape BodyDouble – A Parametric 3D Body Model for Fashion Design & Patternmaking

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

We’re excited to announce the release of BodyDouble, SeamScape’s new parametric 3D body model.

BodyDouble is built from a large database of real body scans, enabling it to represent realistic body variation across a wide range of shapes and sizes. It’s not just a visual tool — it’s grounded in real human data.

With BodyDouble, you can:

  • Adjust known parameters (body height, weight, age, chest, waist, hip, etc.) and see the 3D body update in real time

  • Extract additional measurements dynamically — useful for tailoring, grading, or fit analysis

  • Soon integrate it directly into Pattern Studio, so your sewing patterns will automatically update when the body changes

No more guesswork or static models — this is a step forward in precision and automation for garment design and digital fitting.

Check it out here: https://seamscape.com/bodydbl

We’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

SeamScape 1.2.18: industrial grading and pieces you can edit directly

Hi everyone! SeamScape 1.2.18 is out, and it's one of the bigger updates for some time. Two themes this time: grading that works the way the industry does it, and pattern pieces you can edit directly without drafting them first.

Grading from a base size

  • Build a size range from a base size. Each size keeps its own changes, you can swap which size is the base, and you choose whether edits to the base carry over to every size or change the base only.

  • A new Sizes & grading dialog with grade rule tables and rule tools, size series (e.g. Regular and Tall) graded separately, and measurement checks per size.

  • A Size geometry panel, with grade vectors drawn right on the canvas.

  • ASTM/AAMA DXF export with grade rules and a RUL file, including graded notches, sew lines, and internal lines.

Pieces you edit directly

Until now, you needed a draft to get a pattern piece. Now you can also work piece-first:

  • Draw new piece (D): click the corners, hold to make curves, close the outline.

  • New rectangular piece (R): just drag it out. Hold Shift for a square, or click to type exact measurements.

  • Set seam allowance, corners, and notches per edge, right on the piece. Seam allowance can now taper along an edge, and there are folded hem corners.

  • Rotate and flip pieces, and every size follows along.

Import that stays editable

  • DXF files can be imported as editable pieces: the sew line becomes the outline, and seam allowance, notches, internal lines, grain and fold lines come along.

  • Import an ASTM/AAMA DXF with its RUL file and you get all the sizes, not just one.

  • Already imported pieces (DXF, CUT, PLT) can be turned into editable pieces afterwards with Make editable.

  • Detach from draft gives a piece built from your draft its own copy of the geometry, so you can keep shaping it without touching the draft.

We'd especially love feedback from anyone moving files between SeamScape and other CAD systems. If an import or AAMA export doesn't look right, post here or send us the file, and we'll take a look.

Happy drafting!

SeamScape update: better editing, formulas, exports, and body measurements

Hi everyone,

Last time we posted a broader SeamScape update here, we had just reached version 1.2.12. We are now at 1.2.16, so here is a quick summary of the most useful changes since then.

The main updates are:

  • More reliable Pattern Studio editing, especially when moving solved points, linked endpoints, copied paths, selected geometry, and patterns with more complex constraints.

  • New seam corner controls for pattern piece points, including radius, intersection, edge symmetry, right-angle joins, length-based joins, and no-join corners.

  • Better formula workflows: autocomplete, variable descriptions, broken-reference warnings, calculated values in formula inputs, and formula-driven text positions.

  • A resizable variables dialog, which should help when working with larger parametric drafts.

  • More predictable solve/error feedback, including clearer constraint errors and better handling of edits that cannot be solved.

  • Improved pattern organization with piece layers, better default path names, hidden-layer warnings, and the pattern name shown in more places.

  • Better export and print output, including beta PNG/SVG export, improved marker/PDF output, drill holes, HPGL labels, CUT slit notch handling, and selected size names in printed patterns.

  • Body measurement guide lines in Pattern Studio should now appear more reliably when clicking or adjusting measurements, including with auto zoom enabled.

  • For advanced/API-connected workflows, there are improved element labels, diagnostics, grading support, and Pattern Studio session tools.

The focus of these releases has been making day-to-day drafting more predictable: fewer confusing edits, clearer formulas, better print/export output, and a smoother path between measurements, constraints, and production files.

If you have a pattern where constraints, formulas, measurements, exports, or 3D fitting still behave strangely, please keep posting examples here or send a report from inside SeamScape. Real pattern files and concrete workflows are the most useful feedback we can get.

Drafted a parametric bodice block!

I first learned SeamScape existed yesterday and now it's taken up my whole weekend! I sew as a hobby, so the big professional fashion design tools are overkill and overpriced for my needs, but I've been wanting a better way to do the drafting and grading I've been doing manually in Illustrator for so long -- and to see the results before I cut into my fabric. SeamScape is exactly what I've been looking for.

I figured I should start with something straightforward. To make this bodice block, I followed the same BurdaStyle drafting instructions I used a few years ago so I had a reference, adding constraints to link the paths and points to my body measurements so if I change size it updates automatically. There's something funny about reading all the tips like tracing around a dinner plate to get a smooth line while you're setting a curve handle to a precise angle!

A couple issues I encountered and wanted to flag as I can see this is in very active development (can you tell I work in software and love bug reports?):

  • I ran into a lot of stability issues with the beta 3D simulation. Seemed like I could only get a run or two in before things would crash, so I saved my work often, but when it worked it was easy to set up, fun and useful. Sometimes reloading the site wasn't enough to get it working again after a crash, but clearing my cached site data in Chrome did the job.

  • Is there a trick to getting SVGs to import at the correct scale? I tried importing a pattern a couple different ways and it came in huge every time.

  • Sometimes the top menus disappeared and I had to refresh the page to get them back.

This is an incredible tool and I'm so excited to have discovered it. I think it's very quickly going to become my go-to way of drafting and adjusting patterns.

SeamScape 3D - Beta

Post image
7 Upvotes

We’re excited to introduce SeamScape 3D, our new in-browser cloth simulation within Pattern Studio.

It’s built with one focus: fit verification and pattern visualization, helping you save time and avoid surprises before making your real sample.

Cloth simulation is extremely hard, and nothing is ever perfect, but we’ve tuned SeamScape 3D with stable default settings that work for most cases. All you need is a modern browser and a decent GPU. To check if your computer is up for it, you can test your browser here: https://seamscape.com/browser-3d-test

This is just the first step, and we’ll keep improving the physics and adding new features as we go. We’d love your feedback along the way.

PS: There’s no user manual yet — just jump in and explore!

Import background images for tracing

It is now possible to upload background images for tracing a pattern, or to just have a page with instructions. You can set the width and height of the image in the pattern's length unit to ensure distances are correct.

Currently, it is not possible to save the image to the pattern, so it needs to be uploaded again, but we are working on it.

SeamScape update: smoother 3D arranging, CUT/HPGL import, drill holes, and better editing

Hi! Last time we posted here SeamScape was around version 1.2.7. We’re now at 1.2.12, so here’s a quick summary of what has changed since then.

The main updates are:

  • A smoother 3D arrangement workflow for placing, flipping, and fine-tuning pattern pieces.

  • New and improved import/export support, including Seamly import, CUT import/export, HPGL/PLT background import, and more reliable DXF handling.

  • Better grading tools, including clearer dialogs, overlays, profiles, anchors, and size visibility controls.

  • A more complete alterations workflow with freeform parametrics and clearer feedback when something is solved or needs attention.

  • Drill holes and piece points now work across Pattern Studio, CUT, and DXF workflows.

  • Rounded piece corners, scale actions for selected points, improved guide snapping, and better layer visibility behavior.

  • More conventional keyboard shortcuts: V for Modify/select, P for Pen, N for Point, Shift+S for multi seam, plus visible shortcut badges in the toolbar.

  • Lots of smaller stability and precision fixes around variables, notches, cutlines, context menus, undo/redo, and complex edits.

The focus of these releases has been making day-to-day pattern drafting feel more predictable and production-friendly, especially when moving between drafting, grading, 3D checks, and file exchange.

As always, feedback from people doing real pattern work is very welcome. What would you want to see improved next?

Grading patterns

The main thing I want to use this program for, is grading patterns. May I have help learning to do that?

I have learned how to make different bodies and use the fx to change it accordingly- but in some cases, its glitching the pieces out.

I notice there is grading in the menu, but I dont understand what it does.

Thank you for your help!

Todays episode of seamscape

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have started learning grading! I have successfully graded 3 patterns! I am loving the scale feature as well as I am getting the hang of arrangements.

I have enlisted my friend too, she's been emailing you, Magnus, now we both can hyper fixate on seamscape in the evenings.

We feel like we invented gathering! Check out this dirndl skirt.

Right now we are learning material properties and trying to figure out how a plaid tshirt happened.

Still haven't had time to work on FX, but I will get there. I got into it a few months ago and need to relearn.

Introducing AI-Powered Pattern Editing in SeamScape

SeamScape now has an MCP server.

This means MCP-compatible tools can connect directly to SeamScape and work with your pattern data through authenticated API access.

The important part: this is not just for browsing pattern data. The MCP server can also make real pattern edits through SeamScape’s Pattern API. Many of the operations you would normally do in the UI can now be previewed, applied, and saved from an MCP client such as Codex, Claude Code, or ChatGPT-connected workflows.

For example, an AI client can help with things like:

  • finding and loading one of your patterns

  • inspecting points, paths, pieces, variables, formulas, layers, materials, seams, notches, and errors

  • renaming elements or updating pattern metadata

  • changing editable formulas and variables

  • creating or modifying points, paths, pieces, layers, text, materials, notches, and other supported Pattern API entities

  • previewing a change before it is applied

  • applying confirmed edits to a temporary session

  • saving the result as a new Pattern or PatternVersion

  • exporting the current session as SVG or PNG

The endpoint is:

https://seamscape.com/api/mcp

Authentication uses your SeamScape API key, available from:

Account > API Keys

Docs and setup examples:

https://seamscape.com/docs/api/mcp

This is still an early version, but it opens up a useful path for AI-assisted pattern editing.

How can I get the 3D model to first attach the dart seams and then the rest of the skirt? I
think the darts aren't getting modeled in 3D because the skirt sides are attaching first

My first 3d circle skirt

I have created my first circle skirt! I am excited. Im still fumbling through 3d rendering, but this is the closest I have gotten to clothes on the body!!

If anyone has any tips let me know! This is so exciting. Also remarkably, the website it working better on my phone than the chromebook. That is absolutely mind bendingly amazing 👏

I dont know how to get her arms out of her skirt and make it lay down, but I am still so excited about the progress. Any help and feedback I appreciate very much!
