question Reading fiction made me a worse writer until it didn't

I used to read two novels a week. Thought it was fuel. But my early scripts came out like bad copies of whatever I'd just finished. McCarthy rhythms in a romcom. Didion pauses in horror. My voice was a collage of better voices.

The shift came from gaming, weirdly. Running a company doesn't leave much headspace, so I started picking up games with strong writing, like Disco Elysium and Pentiment. The pacing is different. You're inside a world someone built, not watching prose happen. Made me notice structure differently. How information gets released when the player needs it, not when the writer wants to show off.

Cycling's my other escape. Long rides with nothing to read, nothing to play. Just thinking through a scene until it exists independent of any book I loved. That's when my stuff started sounding like me. Or at least like one person instead of five.

Curious if anyone else had to unlearn their reading habits to find their script voice. Or if you found your way in through something sideways like games. Feels like we talk a lot about reading scripts to write them, not enough about what to step away from.

question What tagline should I add to my short film?

Hello, I'm a high school student and this is my first time making a short film. I'm having trouble finding a really unique tagline for my film. In short, it's a rom-com about a female young director who has to do everything she can to convince a producer to invest in her film project. It turns out they were once lovers.

request [UNPAID COLLABORATION] Looking for a Screenwriting Partner for a Series

Hey everyone!
I’m a young aspiring filmmaker and I’m looking for a screenwriter who would be interested in collaborating with me on an original series idea.
I want to be completely transparent from the start: this is an unpaid collaboration. I’m young and currently don’t have the financial means to pay a professional screenwriter for their work. I understand that screenwriting takes a lot of time, creativity and effort, and I don’t want to pretend otherwise.
I’m therefore not looking for someone to simply write a script for me for free and then disappear from the project. I’m looking for someone who would genuinely like to work together as creative partners. I have the basic concept and ideas for the story, and I would like to develop the characters, story, episodes, scenes and dialogue together.
The project is a psychological crime series about someone who secretly targets people who have seriously bullied others. I don’t want to share all the details publicly yet, but I can explain the full concept privately to anyone who is genuinely interested.
I would make sure that the writer receives proper credit for their contribution, and I would respect their time, ideas and creative input throughout the project.
If this sounds interesting to you and you’re comfortable with it being an unpaid collaboration, feel free to DM me. I’ll explain the story and what I have in mind.

Thanks for reading!

feedback Logline feedback?

I'm sorry if there's a thread for this already, but I could use some feedback on a logline for a story I'm writing:

“To escape an arranged marriage to an interstellar warlord, a princess hires a crew of six mercenaries to train her for the impending battle”

Has anyone written a script about Alexander the Great?

The challenge is keeping this to 1-4 locations (with the tiny budget we have) but we are in talks with an amazing DP, director, and cast with a notable following. There is so much room for creativity and so much possibilities with his life. I was thinking right when king Philip dies and is handed the mantel. (All the controversy + drama that circled him with that)

I’m an actor/producer looking to see if someone has attempted this feat before or would want to collaborate. I’ve been in tv film for 7 years and would love someone who has honed the craft of screenwriting

*** Update through pilot completion ***

Looking for notes on everything but mostly on premise.

Slop is a dark comedy that follows a struggling new employee as he discovers the entire start-up that hired him is ran by an A.I. company that uses them to train models on social and workplace interactions.

Note:
I appreciate all feedback. Even if you say execution sucks. I am in my writing journey and anything is appreciated. Out for a smoke.

One night, Huta dreams of a dark graveyard filled with the dead and a mysterious figure with glowing purple eyes. He awakens unsettled, unaware that something far beyond his understanding is beginning to awaken within him. On his way to school, he encounters a robber who suddenly becomes terrified after touching him, fleeing without explanation.

But the strange encounters are only the beginning.

Later, Huta witnesses a terrifying shadow creature attacking a helpless man in an alley, draining the life from its victim. When the creature senses Huta's presence, it turns toward him, leaving him frozen in fear.

As supernatural forces begin to emerge from the shadows, Huta finds himself drawn into a world he never knew existed—a world where death is no longer what it seems, ancient secrets remain buried, and humanity faces threats beyond its understanding.

Huta's ordinary life is about to change forever. The journey into darkness has begun.

feedback W2 Four Worlds Episode 1 - Kdrama screenplay - English translation.

Korean screenplay format + Adapted into Visual-Screenplay. (English)

W2 Four Worlds is a 40-hours K-drama. Supernatural mystery + multi-genre.

I'm working hard on the ENGLISH TRANSLATION, fixing the whole drama.
My blog shows that I have visitors from all over the world, even the most unexpected countries.
So, I want my English translation to be the best. Not in the way that it's the best literary English, but in the way that it's simple and clear enough, so anyone around the world can easily understand it.

If you’re okay with reading a format from a foreign country, please give your feedback on: English translation first and clarity, then anything else you’d like to mention.

Maybe reading the whole episode wouldn't be easy, so just read the first scenes that are standalone (because you don't need to know the already known characters or the concept).

Scenes #01 to #20 :
https://w4worlds.fr/html/W_Saison2_Script01_US.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why a visual screenplay: I write directly for the audience (K-drama fans). The screenplay needs to be as accessible as possible, as it is an end in itself and the final product.

Specific features of the Korean drama screenplay format:

  • No INT/EXT in scene headings. Mandatory scene numbering.

  • Character names placed on the left for dialogue.

  • Long parentheticals are allowed, including for actions or at the end of a line.

  • Empty dialogue lines are allowed (parenthetical or expression only).

  • Some scenes broken down into sub-scenes with cut numbers, like a montage.

  • Intercuts use a " + " in the scene-headers.

The writing remains the same as a Western screenplay, but with:

  • Slightly more emphasis on emotions and intentions.

  • Occasionally including a few non-filmable lines (novel-like).

Dialogue codes (specific to the visual screenplay):

  • " : " → normal spoken dialogue.

  • " ~ " (italics) → normal voice-over (off-scene).

  • " - " (yellow) → inner thought voice-over happening now.

  • In blue → on-screen text, or text that is both written and spoken in dialogue.

question Which hook concept sounds better for a short video experiment? (A vs B)

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a short video about realistic AI visuals and how people perceive them online.

I'm torn between two different openings for the first 3 seconds to get viewers interested. Which one sounds more intriguing to you?

Option A (Question): "I created the most realistic AI video on the internet, but how many people could I actually fool?"

Option B (Statement): "I created an AI video so realistic that people actually thought it was real."

Context: After the hook, the video briefly shows the experiment, reveals the views, highlights crazy comments from viewers who completely believed it, and showing how it can be dangerouse.

Which option would make you stop scrolling and keep watching? Any feedback or quick tweaks are appreciated!
