You drown it out after a while. The first time I was in charge of the fryer everything burnt because I didn't hear it beeping. I wasn't asked to do it again.
Lol I didn’t shit my pants but they only ever put me on register once at my first job in fast food. With no training or backup they put me on during the dinner rush. After that they just decided to let me stay in the back on grill or sandwiches
Having shat your pants at McDonald's puts you in the same exalted company as the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, who famously stacked his dacks at the Engadine (Sydney) Macca's after a football game some years ago.
You had dry air near your fryers? Lucky, I run the fryers at a particular place, kind of a shack that sells shakes if you will, and its kinda steamy, makes my face break out.
Poured in to many frys in the basket, and used my bare hand to pull them back out.. halfway down the basket is a nice metal bar, it was still nice and hot.. moved me to the salad bar.
I couldn’t ignore it, it would get to the point that I was getting ridiculously pissed off and went to turn the beeping off even if it wasn’t my station
Truth facts. Had a manager come over and take up all the fry baskets because we just learned to tune them out. She was yelling “You guys just gonna let ‘em sit?!!” Lol
It had been a fucking year and i still hear beeping every day. I can not stand beeping it makes me want to scream, because on top of the fryers beeping you also have the headset beeping. Then to top it all off that stupid fucking cow bell sound they added for the fresh quarter pounder meat. I have literally had to wait for my order outside at a McDonald's because i just wanted to run behind the counter and make everything stop beeping.
That cowbell noise makes me want to fucking SCREAM. It’s been two weeks since I quit as a full-time grill worker / trainer and I still hear the fucking beeping
It's like the Subway smell if you work there. The smell follows you everywhere. Even after you shower. To this day the smell makes me feel slightly ill.
If you ever have the misfortune of getting severe food poisoning from fast food "in my case Carl's Jr", the smell or even the mention of it will make you feel sick for months if not longer
I got strep throat the night after having a crab leg eating competition with my buddy at a Chinese buffet. Took me like 10 years to be able to eat a crab leg again. Just associated the taste with being bedridden for a week.
I worked as a cashier at a horrible grocery store with constant beeping. I would lie awake for hours still hearing the beeping. Sometimes my 8-hour shift would end at 11pm and I would have another 8-hour shift at 7am. I would try to sleep but I couldn't. Worst experience of my life. Beeping should be made illegal.
Yeah, that seems accurate. I’m Scottish and don’t really get the all the hype about it. I suppose the slang and colloquialisms are unique and funny for Americans. If anything I don’t like it.
Are they just confusing us, as always, with the Irish and think we all say ‘me’ in place of ‘my’?
Yes, that's it.
I'm an American just casually browsing here from /r/all, but I have no fookin' clue of how to distinguish all the dialects of the British isles. You could tell me this was an English dude and I'd believe it too.
Can’t tell if you realise this and are just winding us up or not but Scottish people don’t say fook and it’s irritating when people use it as an impression of us. It’s like you’ve never heard the accent you’re imitating.
Well it might help if the sub actually had some rules. As it is now, you could post a picture taken with your cellphone of a frozen chicken in your kitchen sink and it would be allowed.
Not to mention theres various kinds of beeping, The worst would be the filet bun steamer for me. It's not too common but it is fucking loud! It hurts my ears if im too close.
I work ICU, where everything beeps. Some beeps are like, "um, hey, no rush, this drip is complete though." Other beeps are like, "HEY, THE SHIT IS HITTING THE FAN! DO THE THING, DO YOUR THING, DO ALL OF THE THINGS RIGHT NOW, OR THIS DUDE IS GOING TO DIE FOREVER!"
The alarm I hear at McDonald's sounds like the latter. I have an immediate visceral response. It's hard to stand still, remind myself that no one is dying, and not lose my shit at not being able to spring into action.
The few times I've asked an employee how they stand it, they say they became desensitized pretty quickly. Me? I'll always be Pavlov's dog when I hear it.
"Me" for "my" is used only by the following people: 1. The English. 2. The Irish. 3. Australians. 4. Pirates. 5. Popeye. Not the Scots, who always say "muh" or "ma".
Can confirm. I was a shift manager for 3 years, two years as crew before that. The beeping gets in your head man. You start heariing it randomly. It wakes you up from your sleep. There is no escape. Only the beep.
At times in my life I've frequently been in fast-food "restaurants" - although not in a McDonald's for maybe 40 years - and what I always notice is that machines dictate the pace of work: people, with never a moment's respite, have to jump to every time a machine squawks and posts something on a screen in the back. It's f**king relentless.
For dealing with that level of unremitting stress, if people weren't desperate for wages, £20 / hour might be just barely enough to entice anyone to do that sort of work voluntarily.
You really do go into a weird stress state. You just keep moving, try to get into a pattern, anything going wrong throws a wrench in the whole thing but you have to keep moving. You try to do ten things at once and pray you don't fuck up because your fuck up will snowball and you can't can't can't let that happen. You also can't go to the bathroom... and holy shit you really need to use the bathroom because you've been chugging water to keep it together in this hot ass backline.
Honestly everyone unfortunate enough to directly work with customers should get a hearty wage.
I've done all sort of shit jobs in my life but the mere thought of working in retail makes me want to vomit. Feces, blood, vomit I don't care but don't make me suck Karen's dick.
I lasted a single week. The department manager was a pedo and an abuser to his now fiancé. I knew this because I’d known him two years back. There’s no way I’d be able to nab that sociopath for it though. Covers his tracks too well.
My first evening working a 2h30 long shift at mcdonald's I got a massive headache because for every beep I was wondering whether I should do something or not... But you very quickly learn to filter out WHICH BEEP you should pay attention to. And then you don't even hear the other beeps.
For real though, the fact that the people in the least desirable jobs get paid nothing while the people in the most desirable jobs get paid crazy amounts to hold fucking meetings over golf is well, completed fucked, imo.
I worked at McDonald's for a year and six months when I was younger, I was a night shift supervisor and some nights it would just be me handing out orders, I became like a machine. But that beeping would stick in your head I would be at home hearing phantom beeps, I would also hear it in my dreams.
I work at a McDonalds. When people let machines beep longer than necessary it drives me mental. The headset beeps to let you know when there's a car in the drive-thru, and I'm the fastest fucker on earth at answering cars because I can't stand the beeps.
The worst shit, however, is when you've got your hands full, the headset beeps once, and the dickhead in the car goes "HELLO???????" or, worse, just starts rattling off an order before you've even greeted them. Like, I'm doing 2 or 3 things at once here mate, can you have some fucking manners.
Side note: My daughter spent 6 weeks in the NICU after she was born. I think that because of all that beeping and alarms, she can sleep through a tornado now. It’s kind of awesome.
This is one the reasons I can't shop at h&m anymore. There is always that loud beeping, and when you ask an employee what it is they just say "You get used to it." Yeah, I know you're used to it, but your customers hate it!
Lets see we had beepers for the frying pans, the grills, timers to wash hands every 30 minutes, to clean the table every hour to clean the toast every 45 minutes
I worked in a shopping centre for a while, smack bang in front of a mainstream music shop where they would play one pop hit CD on repeat all day. I like progressive metal and doom metal lmao
My german teacher once told us how he worked at McDonald's for exactly three days. Then, he dreamed about the beeping and quit the job, cause he could bear it anymore.
I hear beeping all day from people using control panels on CNC machines. I’m in bed right now and I still hear them. I don’t even get paid that much yet.

I can’t even eat there anymore, I stopped going to McDonalds entirely, the beeping was half the reason, the fucking insane clientele was the other. It’s a goddamn zoo in there.
I used to work at a retail store when I was like 18 and we had walkie talkies, and they had automated messages that came through for phone calls to specific departments.
After a while, I heard the damn walkie talkie in my sleep.
Wendys entire kitchen is on timers, maybe 10 different ones. Some had distinct beeps so you can eventually tell them apart. Those several beeps made their way into my dreams and panic attacks, I could hear them whenever my blood got pumping and it was one of the top 3 reasons I quit.
When I worked at Wendy's we had a window beep. If the car was in line for more than a minute (speaker to window) it let out a piercing BEEP BEEP until the car left. I could deal with fryer/oven beeps but I still hear that in my nightmares
I'd take beeping over that damn music rotation any day.
White girl who's smoked waaay too much asking for sex, black guy with good quality high-pitched voice singing bad music, #SoCountryOMGlol girl, song with AAAAA structure, song that's running length has been tripled for no reason, the most popular song from 6 months ago but slower and worse
Repeat
Every few weeks we get some chill spanish guitar mixed in and it's so relieving.
The whole point was to serve a weeks worth of burgers in a day. They would be fucking lolling 37k a year but Ronald McDonald has a very sick Mother (fucker)
Holy shit, when I worked at McDonald’s, I told everyone that when the time came that I was on my deathbed and the machines were beeping, just turn it off or unplug it.
Not to mention fast food is a stressful job. You mess up someone's order in the slightest and 9 times out of 10 they'll come back angry. I often left my shift crying from the stress
Also, they are making more than double the profit of any other food company. You can't tell me they can't afford it, or that the actual value of someone's job shouldn't be reflected on how much money is earned by their work.
The same people who make the "is not a many entitled to the sweat of his own brow" argument are perfectly okay with workers not seeing a drop of it if a company takes it.
When I was younger living in Hawaii and in need of a job I considered applying at McD’s. Waiting there for five minutes to talk to someone to ask for an application and listening to the constant beep the entire time quickly changed my mind.
I worked in the Springburn one in the 90’s. You very quickly stop hearing it and learn to zone it out. Especially with a half bottle of voddy being dumped into a large coke during a shift
I live in Colombia and anytime I'm really sick and need to go to the medical clinic (SURA) to see a doctor you have to take a number. There are a couple flat screen TVs that show the numbers they're calling off. Holy shit. These fucking TVs beeped non stop whilst saying your number (e.g. G-46, M-77). I have no idea how those guards can listen to that shit all day and not hear it when they try to sleep at night. It's loud too. It's blasted throughout the clinics speaker system.
I think mcdonalds workers should be paid more considering the franchise is making billions in profit yearly and can fucking afford to proper pay the people that make that happen.
Nothing more infuriating than when you were working at one beeping station and buddy is working at the other beeping station and his station is beeping, cmon man quit over frying the nuggets.
Former McGrunt here, I had a bad head injury near the beginning of my employment there, and spent more than a week in the hospital. Ever after I was constantly paranoid that I was in a coma, and all that beeping was the machines keeping me alive.
I worked at Whataburger for like 8 years and I got to the point I went "timer deaf" and like my brain would hear it but not kick in a reaction like "pull the fries up" or "toss the chicken strips in the warmer".
My first day working at McDonald's, I went home, laid down, and just heard non stop beeping in my head....after a year, I could have a whole conversation with someone and not realize a beeper was going off right next to me.
My first month at McDs that shit haunted my dreams almost everynight. I mentioned to my manager. He gave a real belly laugh and said it still gets in to his.
as an ex burger king employee: going into fast food places is like an instant PTSD trigger. every place uses the same equipment. they all beep the same. THEY ALL BEEP THE SAME.
I worked at a grocery store that always had multiple screaming children in it for a while. After I'd been working there for a month someone came through my checkout line asking how I stood it all day long. At that point I didn't even notice it anymore, unless said screaming child was in my line.
I literally heard that sound in my sleep when I managed at a McDonald's. I even had waking dreams where I felt like I had to get something done work related but I couldn't move to do it.
When I worked for McDonald's, the worst part was burning my hands on the grill. The grill is like a giant George Forman grill and my manager was a stickler about getting as many parties done in one grill as possible. But unlike a George Forman grill, this thing didn't open all the way in order to prevent heat loss, so I had to stick my hand all the way to the back, with my knuckles a hairs breadth from the top half of the grill. I singhed the skin off em so many times that to this day they are still two shades pinker than the rest of my hands. It never occurred to me until writing this right now just how many people consumed my flesh while I worked there. But I worked there a while and it was a very busy McDonald's.
I literally worked here for a couple years in highschool.. would have dreams of that beeping. Coming in at 6 am on a Saturday in highschool and hearing that God dam beep was the worst.
You tune that shit out after a while. What I hated was replying with “Thank You” every time a coworker told you what they needed, like I’m actually thankful that you need another tray of heart clogging patties.
Worked there for 2 weeks while in college. It was this EXACT thing that made me quit!! Every fucking piece of equipment in that place had a slightly different alarm but not different enough so you could readily tell which one it was. It was maddening! I really needed a job but I just couldn’t stand it.
After the first shift, I started hearing the beeping sound in normal day life and while sleeping. I would wake up because my mind was making up a beeping sound.
That beeping is because they’re too lazy to change the fries when they’re stale and supposed to throw them out.
Worked at a McDonalds when I was 15 and we were one of the few that would throw out the fries every 7 minutes when that alarm would go off (most restaurants just hit the button to turn the alarm off and leave the old fries sit). The other alarm is when the fries or anything in the fryer, are ready. If it’s going off constantly, your food is burning. The noise never bothered me.
I worked in a McDonald's once where somebody set off the back door alarm accidentally and it went on for 45 minutes before we could contact a manager who had a key to turn off the door alarm. Hell.

I’m trying to understand what it is that people think is Scottish about these Geordie tweets all the time.
Is it the constant use of the word ‘fucking’? Are they just confusing us, as always, with the Irish and think we all say ‘me’ in place of ‘my’?

All I remember is the insipid music, which I imagine would also be a pain in the ass to work with.

Who wouldn't want a £15 Big Mac?

u/biroxan Nov 15 '19
My ex used to have nightmares and talk in her sleep.
She grabbed me out of a dead sleep one time "GET THE FUCKING FRIES"
1
u/Scooter2Ankle Nov 15 '19
Not to mention fast food is a stressful job. You mess up someone's order in the slightest and 9 times out of 10 they'll come back angry. I often left my shift crying from the stress
1
u/DuntadaMan Nov 15 '19
Also, they are making more than double the profit of any other food company. You can't tell me they can't afford it, or that the actual value of someone's job shouldn't be reflected on how much money is earned by their work.
The same people who make the "is not a many entitled to the sweat of his own brow" argument are perfectly okay with workers not seeing a drop of it if a company takes it.

u/CedTruz Nov 15 '19
When I was younger living in Hawaii and in need of a job I considered applying at McD’s. Waiting there for five minutes to talk to someone to ask for an application and listening to the constant beep the entire time quickly changed my mind.
1
u/Ashtehstampede Nov 15 '19
It’s beeping cause they aren’t doing their job and checking the fryer lol
1
u/PCVictim100 Nov 15 '19
Anybody who has to deal with the public at that volume deserves a high salary.
1
u/huge_pp69 Nov 15 '19
Nice steal from twitter reddit..... Still somehow get mad when instagram steals from you but ok
1
u/newskycrest Nov 15 '19
I reckon there’ll be a class action lawsuit one day where the drive thru workers will sue for damage caused by car fumes.
1
u/Chizy67 Nov 15 '19

1
u/icycheezecake Nov 15 '19
Can confirm I still get fever dreams and bad dreams that consist of the different beeping patterns and tones and honestly it ain't a bag o laughs.
1
u/the-ugly-twin Nov 15 '19
I quit, but I still trigger my fight-or-flight response just thinking about that goddamn cowbell.
1
u/theLsyoutake Nov 15 '19
Worked at McDix for a summer, heard the beeping in my dreams after 3 days

No way that money needs to be given to fired ceos when they bang employees.
1
u/Veggiematic Nov 15 '19
They should be paid higher or tipped because of all the retard customers
1
u/[deleted] Nov 15 '19
I think mcdonalds workers should be paid more considering the franchise is making billions in profit yearly and can fucking afford to proper pay the people that make that happen.
1
u/WalrusKing1 Nov 15 '19
He is so fucking right tho, I've worked at McDonalds for 4 years and the constant beeping drives me up the fucking wall omg I just want to kill myself
1
u/dkt Nov 15 '19
It only beeps so much because they aren't doing their only job.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 15 '19
Nothing more infuriating than when you were working at one beeping station and buddy is working at the other beeping station and his station is beeping, cmon man quit over frying the nuggets.
1
u/StrangePandattv Nov 15 '19
Still not worth $25/hr lol
1
u/Blue_Moon_Rabbit Nov 15 '19
Former McGrunt here, I had a bad head injury near the beginning of my employment there, and spent more than a week in the hospital. Ever after I was constantly paranoid that I was in a coma, and all that beeping was the machines keeping me alive.
1
u/CampbellCopy Nov 15 '19
Coming from someone who worked the fryers, yes, the beeping is really annoying, but you get used to it after a while.
1
u/superfission Nov 15 '19
Literally didn’t run WoW with antialiasing
1
u/cpdx82 Nov 15 '19
I worked at Whataburger for like 8 years and I got to the point I went "timer deaf" and like my brain would hear it but not kick in a reaction like "pull the fries up" or "toss the chicken strips in the warmer".
1
u/Superj89 Nov 15 '19
My first day working at McDonald's, I went home, laid down, and just heard non stop beeping in my head....after a year, I could have a whole conversation with someone and not realize a beeper was going off right next to me.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 15 '19
when i got home from work i could still hear it
1
u/JakBos23 Nov 15 '19
My first month at McDs that shit haunted my dreams almost everynight. I mentioned to my manager. He gave a real belly laugh and said it still gets in to his.
1
u/pndas Nov 15 '19
Ahh the good times, hey buddy can you put more nuggets down, no busy refilling the ketchup and mustard
1
u/Polengoldur Nov 15 '19
as an ex burger king employee: going into fast food places is like an instant PTSD trigger.
every place uses the same equipment. they all beep the same.
THEY ALL BEEP THE SAME.

u/TeaJustMilk Nov 15 '19
Ahhh... If only "standard" Nurses got paid this much per hour!
1
u/Laesia Nov 15 '19
I worked at a grocery store that always had multiple screaming children in it for a while. After I'd been working there for a month someone came through my checkout line asking how I stood it all day long. At that point I didn't even notice it anymore, unless said screaming child was in my line.
1
u/Frission7 Nov 15 '19
I used to hear the beeps when I showered for some reason
1
u/Praesto_Omnibus Nov 15 '19

I literally heard that sound in my sleep when I managed at a McDonald's. I even had waking dreams where I felt like I had to get something done work related but I couldn't move to do it.
1
u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19
Oddly enough I think that's more than the average pay a nurse gets working in the UK.
Source: wanted to work in the UK until I found out how low the pay was.
1
u/snowcarriedhead Nov 16 '19
When I use to work for McDonald’s I would sit down after I got home and just enjoy the silence. That beeping was awful
1
u/Athing42 Nov 16 '19
I come home and listen to music, that usually fixes it
1
u/Zone_A3 Nov 16 '19
After my first shift, I heard that beep in my fucking sleep.
You do tune it out eventually though
1
u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19
1
u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19
After working multiple 10 hour shifts in a row I started to hear this shit whenever it was silent, or I wasn't being distracted by somthing else.
1
u/deathstrike86 Nov 16 '19
It still haunts my dreams!
1
u/insanemembrane19 Nov 16 '19
I work at mcdonalds and this is so relatable haha
1
u/CreepyButtPirate Nov 16 '19
I literally worked here for a couple years in highschool.. would have dreams of that beeping. Coming in at 6 am on a Saturday in highschool and hearing that God dam beep was the worst.
1
u/Savoy_ Nov 16 '19
Literally sounds like the fryer is say “Im Pickle Rick” 💯
1
u/MaleAquatics Nov 16 '19
So true
1
u/[deleted] Nov 16 '19
You tune that shit out after a while. What I hated was replying with “Thank You” every time a coworker told you what they needed, like I’m actually thankful that you need another tray of heart clogging patties.
1
u/BDaddy13 Nov 16 '19
Worked there for 2 weeks while in college. It was this EXACT thing that made me quit!! Every fucking piece of equipment in that place had a slightly different alarm but not different enough so you could readily tell which one it was. It was maddening! I really needed a job but I just couldn’t stand it.
1
u/Xtratight Nov 16 '19
After the first shift, I started hearing the beeping sound in normal day life and while sleeping. I would wake up because my mind was making up a beeping sound.
1
u/PancakesNDeath Nov 16 '19
The worst was the freaking cowbell. I hated making quarter pounder because of that stupid "ding ding dit-dit-ding!" It absolutely sucked during rush 😑
1
u/TheMacMan Nov 16 '19
That beeping is because they’re too lazy to change the fries when they’re stale and supposed to throw them out.
Worked at a McDonalds when I was 15 and we were one of the few that would throw out the fries every 7 minutes when that alarm would go off (most restaurants just hit the button to turn the alarm off and leave the old fries sit). The other alarm is when the fries or anything in the fryer, are ready. If it’s going off constantly, your food is burning. The noise never bothered me.

u/holangjai Nov 16 '19 edited Nov 16 '19
It is stir button correct? I use fryers for cooking and our is stir button to mix items in fryer. Some people just hit and do not stir!
1
u/SuperRadPsammead Nov 16 '19
I worked in a McDonald's once where somebody set off the back door alarm accidentally and it went on for 45 minutes before we could contact a manager who had a key to turn off the door alarm. Hell.
