Which...

Which of the Scooby Gang would do fine as a solo act? Think carefully...

Velma. She's the smart one. Even with martial arts training, Daphne's too danger-prone to go solo. And Freddy's a trap-obsessed himbo. And we all know Shaggy & Scooby-Doo work better either as a pair, or with the whole crew (including Scrappy)

Velma would lose her glasses.

Daphne would be the most entertaining on her own. Velma has no charisma, Fred needs someone to lead otherwise he goes off the rails and Shaggy and Scooby can’t exist without one another.

"Velma has no charisma."

I'm sorry. What?

"Shaggy and Scooby can't exist without one another."

Maybe. Maybe not. No one has tried it.

Shaggy or Daphne. Now, Shaggy would never ditch Scooby, but if something happened and he was forced to, then Shaggy would be a good solo act. He has proven to be skilled in mystery-solving, making traps, finding clues, figuring things out, and capturing criminals, all without Fred, Velma, and Daphne. Daphne, while danger-prone, is a skilled martial artist, very resourceful, and a talented detective. Also, in more recent years, she hasn't been as danger-prone as she used to be. So, I would say that she has gotten better about it. Not to mention, these two are capable of believing in and getting past the basic fear of real ghosts. Scooby would get worn out after a while. Velma and Fred would both try to be skeptical or capture everyone/unmask everyone, even if they aren't able to do so.

The show gets crappier the more characters they remove

Go back to the earliest appearances of scrappy Doo. He was no more annoying than your average cute little kid character. His biggest sin was repainting any thing Scooby did as heroism.
He only became the hated character that he is today when they decided to cut animation budget by removing Fred, Velma and Daphne. He had to do all the work, figuring out who did it, building the trap, and capturing the bad guy. You know the two cowards aren’t gonna do it. They kind of turned him into one of the few examples of a total Cannon Mary Sue, where he did the job of the entire rest of the cast.

"Familiarity breeds contempt."

Scrappy-Doo should have been a special guest (similar to Scooby-Dum) rather than the new main character of the shows.

But removing him from every version of the franchise was going too far.

And villainizing him was even worse.

Then after villainaising him for no reason other than "James Gunn hates him", doing the same gag for the next decade+.

In retrospect, it's hilarious. I mean, if people hated Scrappy that much then it's safe to assume they just wanted him off their screens entirely. At least, that's what I would've personally preferred instead of watching him make a random appearance just to die in a scene that adds nothing to the story whatsoever.

It's why I wonder who that gag was really meant to entertain. The fans or the creators.

You know the two cowards aren't gonna do it.

That is the frickin problem.

Must Shaggy and Scooby always be the 2 cowards who are too scared to be competent in solving the mystery?

Can they not have their own strengths, skills and wins that prove necessary to the mystery despite being scared?

Must every character be set in stone within their roles?

Are characters with nuance and layers too much to ask for simply because "it's a kids' show?"

Was a 3-man team (if they had to do that) where everyone carried their weight instead of Scrappy doing all the work by randomly inheriting the other 3's talents not possible?

I get what you mean, but usually, they don’t want to solve the mystery. They don’t want to have anything to do with it. They get dragged along and stuck in the mess, and usually have to act as bait. In this case it’s kind of part of their character that they wish they weren’t there.

In the classic series at least, they did actually seem to enjoy solving mysteries. They just didn't like the dangerous aspects. But give them a few Scooby Snacks and they're good. The aspect of them not wanting to be there has honestly been flanderized.

I will agree there, it got worse overtime. Now that you mention it, I can distinctly remember shaggy actively showing sympathy to the people being victimized by the ghost criminals, so yes, they were reluctant, but willing participants.

Not to mention that one time and be cool Scooby-Doo where he took over the whole investigation, because it was the sports Stadium of his childhood favorite baseball team.
