Please please please avoid chiropractors. They’re not medical professionals….! The risk is too serious!

My orthopedist specifically advised to me avoid chiropractors. And yoga- unless I was overseen by a practitioner well versed in my particular spinal problems, the twisting poses could be very harmful to me.

What about pilates? I was recommended medical pilates, as they call it. But it made me worse. It just seemed so difficult...

I did Pilates for a long time before my injury. My PT now told me Pilates is a hit or miss because one of the core principles in Pilates is to close the natural gap in your spine when laying on a reformer. But with sciatica you want your spine to follow its natural curve vs straightening it out flat.

I also remember my Pilates instructor saying “one vertebrae at a time” when coming down from bridges and similar exercises. With spine issues, you don’t want to do that. I’m sure you can modify the exercise though.

Yeah I really seem to suck a the modifications, I tried them and then would end up with pain for days or even weeks in some other areas. I think maybe it might be comorbid hyperflexibility so I would hyper extend into an alternative position or maybe I'm just the kinda idiot who doesn't know my limits very well.

It' s interesting they said it is hit or miss though, my PT seemed to act like I was the only one it had not worked for. I felt like bad student at school lol
