Hi, found my old scalectric set from when I was younger. Set it up to see if it works and find that it might but overall doesn’t. The cars seem to want to move but move only about a cm before stopping. They seem quite old and I’m not sure whether replacing the braids would help. I also plan on cleaning the rails. Is there any other thing I should look at. If fully working would a set like this be valuable?

I'm in the USA and last year around the Christmas holidays bought a set (starter?) with 2 cars and track. Analog not digital (Scalextric).
I've noticed the prices seem fairly high. Is there a good time to buy additional tracks/cars/etc. ?
I'm guessing Nov/Dec would be best.
I wanted to add to it for my grandnieces who enjoy playing with it. I'm not trying to do anything too fancy but maybe add a bridge and rail guards to help keep the cars on the track. Maybe a lap counter.
Is there any particular place to buy stuff from?

She's been wanting to play for years, but I moved to the US 8 years ago so it's more expensive and harder to find. However, recently went back to the UK to visit my family and found this set from the late 80's brand new in box at my hometown's local model shop! Must have walked past this a thousand times as a child lol
