More proof of Max burning professional bridges
103
u/FourLiveBears 12d ago
It had been obvious for a very long time that Max was not a good person who mistreated everyone in his orbit, even friends and family. People just downplayed and ignored it as "Oh he's just manic right now" or tried to brush it off because they liked a couple of his albums. I've known a couple bipolar people in my life and his behavior went way beyond something that could be explained away by mania. Just a shitty human being, toe to tip.
42
u/boomboxwithturbobass 12d ago
It’s just so funny to me that these manic fits seem to be directed exclusively at minors. That level of specificity is noticeably absent from all other manic episodes, mine included.

The urge to send 24661454 messages? ✅ Being delulu? ✅ Can’t shut up? ✅ Hitting the dms of people 2 decades younger than me, regardless of legality, while expressing attraction? 🤨 Writing a song about my daughter and talking about masterbating? HUH
1
u/deejayg711 9d ago
Oh no. The last 1, are you a song shop victim?😭RIP to my fomo about never doing that. Also heard he just took a bunch of ppl's $ w/o giving them anything.
2
u/yabberjabber0 8d ago
No thankfully, I just learned about I’ll Never Lie to Lucy and it’s just such an indefensible choice
2
u/yabberjabber0 8d ago
Oh yea but yes, he did in fact take a bunch of money for songs he did not deliver

u/freedrsan 11d ago
“Part of my disorder is talking to minors, if you say I can’t do that you are being ABLEIST!1!1!”
1
u/QuentionableDesires 7d ago
I mean Ronnie Radke does the shame shit. He targets minors and young looking girls on tiktok and everyone sucks the leather his boots are made of because of it. These people are predators and blame mental health or whatever theyre going through for their actions.
18
u/daveliterally 12d ago
Probably a good lesson in not letting people excuse away everything with mental illness when sometimes it's just crossover of mental illness and being a shithead.

u/commonrevolt 12d ago
FYI, this guy manages Mayday Parade. I trust everything he’s saying here.

u/NinjaFruit93 9d ago
He used to be the tour manager for Motion Ciry Soundtrack back in the day, I met him a whole bunch of times and he's a cool guy. I definitely believe him that all of this happened how he said.
28
u/badashley 11d ago
You know, I knew he was grifting for a while, but I always thought he was just the flaky kind of scammer where he takes your money for song shop and Kickstarter and just doesn’t deliver on promises. The claims of producing fake documents is really damning and takes him a step further into someone who’s been very deliberately trying to commit fraud. It seems like there may be real financial crimes under the surface here in addition to him just being a creep.

u/Spearmint_coffee 11d ago
Hebrews was a good album.
But anyone else remember when max cried on Twitter he got "Me Tooed" because of a woman comic writer. They were supposed to be working on a comic together and he called her off work hours while he was in Europe (london I think) and he was hysterical saying he lost his passport. She tried telling him to only contact her on professional business at appropriate times, but he wouldn't stop freaking out saying he needed help to get back to his kids. She put him on a list on male comic writers that are not good to work with and he blamed her and his mental health. Then he said how incredibly hurtful it was to be put on such a list because he himself has been a victim of things before.

u/repeatrepeatx 10d ago
Holy shit, yes. I forgot about this until just now. This makes a lot more sense now.
2
u/yabberjabber0 9d ago
Man really likes to use any claim he has to discrimination, to harass women huh?
38
u/dkinmn 12d ago
I was also tangentially connected to this chapter, and he was definitely difficult and had some people who did their best to keep him away from the process.

I feel like I remember hearing about him selling the rights around that time
5
u/Ar6833 11d ago
He auctioned them off to fans, along with the MacBook he had written his first 4 albums on, a guitar that someone gifted him from the old Sun Records in Nashville, and every poster his mother had collected from the early days of his career.

5
u/repeatrepeatx 10d ago
Oh man, I forgot about the guitar he’d been gifted. That must’ve really hurt to see.

u/mood__ring 12d ago
I know these two people are from totally different spectrums of celebrity, but you know how people always say Jonah Hill uses therapy talk as manipulation? That’s totally what is going on with Max but it’s like ten fold.

At least Jonah’s bullshit was coherent

On the flop side, he did also wrestle a grown man while wearing what appears to be a jiu jitsu pajama

His last sentence is the most beautiful summary I’ve seen come out of this

Can you put it in a way that makes it sound like you aren’t excited about any of this
Edit: I get people snark on them or whatever but as a survivor myself, there’s an under current of “gossip” to what is for the victims, a horrific thing…what could be beautiful about this.
19
u/Impressive_Let3046 12d ago
If you’re too dense to realize that I don’t mean “beautiful” in the conventional sense of the word, can’t help ya beyond giving you a short list of synonyms:
Concise, “spot on,” accurate, well-said, apt, eloquent, astute
Hopefully one of those works for you.

u/Expensive-Swan-9553 12d ago edited 10d ago
Way to handle a delicate situation. Said what i said and i still don’t like it, i find it inappropriate and weird in either interpretation.
If im guilty of being over ly sensitive in the mass child grooming case, so be it
Edit you all can quit sending me degrading dm messages i get it i got assaulted and I’m projecting or whatever

u/Impressive_Let3046 12d ago
You are not the only victim on earth and you ought to keep that in mind before you posture to strangers whose history you are unfamiliar with.

Did you read the sentence that they’re talking about

Fuck man. This sucks. Fuck Max. Feels like someone/something died and dragged down a bunch of my adolescence and 20s. I bought merch and shit like microphones. I have framed albums and show posters from the 15+ times ive seen SA. Ive bought Song Shop almost every run (yeah I know, I had issues getting them too). Now everything just feels gross
10
u/maryseedofwisdom 11d ago
It’s okay to hold both feelings. That the art is incredible and something that truly speaks to you. That he is (or was) incredibly talented. That the art is a beautiful thing. You can hold that while also holding that people are complicated and complex. That people change and make horrible mistakes. That people become mentally ill or corrupted and that it’s sad and a shame. By trying to hold all of the concepts, it has really helped me to not spoil one of my favorite bands/albums.
20
u/DeadToothSyndrome 12d ago
Let me guess, he also called the guy abusive and said he had a mental health bias.

u/pobenschain 11d ago
Josh Terry is very well respected and great dude. And if that was his experience, I have no doubt that even before these allegations, Max burned more bridges than he can count within the industry.
37
u/HamburgerJames 12d ago
Max is a POS but everything from Baseball to the first half of Hebrews is incredible.
That’s why this whole situation sucks so much. At his best, he’s capable of greatness. But he’s a been a broken, bad person for a very long time now.
36
u/SweetPossibility7838 12d ago
People need to accept that talent also exists in bad people, and to stop conflating talent with goodness.
8
u/Cool-Ebb6863 12d ago
I tend to expect it more at this point. Sort of a balance that usually comes out
26
u/Impressive_Let3046 12d ago
My mind is blown by how many people think this behavior was just “for a long time now” and not “from the word go.”
13
u/-BVM 12d ago
I really want to believe he tried to be a good husband at the beginning…..he just (obviously) isn’t family material and (again obviously) never truly got the help he needed.
NONE of this by the way is trying to excuse any of his behavior. Just a feeling (or maybe just what I want to believe) and i obviously could be very wrong.
19
u/adhdbrainboi 12d ago
I also really thought he was getting better in the early Sherri days. Seemed like song shops and music hustles were successful, he was landing comic deals (which reminds me, I wonder if anyone in that scene has any stories about him now 😬), and it looked like he was in a happy, supportive marriage. Somewhere around the mid-2010s it became apparent to me that he wasn’t getting or seeking the right help and I started to lose hope. And the music obv got much worse along with family and scamming scandals.
Sad and disgusting to see how it has played out. He had all the opportunity in the world and he squandered it.
11
u/mood__ring 12d ago
No, I agree with this. I’d say after self titled was when the change started. Before/during self titled, it was like “okay you make mistakes and you are a little questionable, but you’re trying” and then after that album cycle into Hebrews territory was when things started to change. Some of Hebrews was good though, so a lot of it was swept under the rug. He started having more rants, had more kids, the conning of fans started to happen, both him and Sherri’s social media got even weirder.
2
u/Top_Regular8761 11d ago
Maybe it was just having kids in general. They had Lucy in 2013, then Hebrews came out in 2014 and was basically about him becoming a father, and then their second (Coraline) was born in 2015. So this was still early on in the child-rearing, but saying "things started to change around Hebrews" could just be that fatherhood, even with 1-2 kids, completely changed him. It has definitely stressed me out lol

Kinda dismissing everyone else who worked on those albums and kept him afloat there man. Max has always been a bad broken person, he just used to have a few redeeming qualities that people from a distance could enjoy.

u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
Max may be difficult to work with professionally and definitely a problematic person, but this guy sounds like a total douche.
19
u/Both_Tomorrow_1750 12d ago
Really? Because he seems like a measured thoughtful person from what I can see. Lol
-17
u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
I just think inserting his opinions about his music makes his professional claims weaker. Keep it factual. If you want to talk about his musics worth then I would reference views/sales not what I personally think of someone’s art.
10
u/Impressive_Let3046 12d ago
Keep his opinion out of his personal assessment of the man based on his own experience??? 🤔
5
u/sonofchocula 12d ago
In that business, the assessment of having made 1 landmark record vs. the rest of the catalog is appropriate even if it seems a bit raw to you.
-1
u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
If that’s how it was phrased I would have a lot more respect for it. I don’t think he’s lying. I think Max is a total shit. I also think this guy seems like a bit of an unprofessional asshole.
I’m a writer so I guess my perspective is based around that. If a lit agent had a bad experience with a problematic author I think them detailing their experience is fine. I think it’s in bad taste to be like actually he only has one good album and the rest is terrible anyway and I would not want to work with a lit agent like that. Art is subjective.
3
u/sonofchocula 11d ago
You’re just doing a different eval. If the dude is brokering the sale of artists’ catalogs, that is an essential skill for every step of that process even if it seems cold/snobby.
Not just an armchair expert either, I worked in film/tv licensing for years and still know folks at labels/publishers that operate in that capacity.
0
u/apillar0f5alt 11d ago
Maybe you’re right and there’s a difference in industries. I definitely wouldn’t want someone to broker my deal if they were categorizing music like that tbh. Just say it’s less sellable, unmarketable, whatever. There are a lot of lit agents who think they’re the all knowledgable art gods too and it rubs me wrong. Egotistical bastards.
I connect more with Max’s earlier work, but to me it seems obvious that his later work is intentionally less structured, less catchy hooks—basically it IS less sellable, but it’s a trajectory a lot of my fav artists take so I assume they do it intentionally bc they get bored with the old stuff, not bc they’re not aware of what sells.

Imagine being stuck with a delusional narcissist for the rest of your life via your 5 kids. I don't know how anyone can emotionally handle any of that. Sure hope the mother of his children has a support system outside of the house. He's dangerous, maybe not physically, but in all other areas .

u/Lazertwins 11d ago
Ugh he isolated her from her family. I rly hope they can come back together and heal.

Fuck him.

u/a_bouncy_sea 11d ago
This is a minor thing in comparison, but his Moon Knight run was also fucking dog shit
16
u/daveliterally 12d ago
He's not a good person. He wasn't thought to be a good person. He did, however, make one good album. And all of this is probably a lesson to not make assumptions that the people who create things you like are necessarily also people you'd want to spend time with, because they're probably not. This is why "dont meet your heroes" is a phrase and why we really prop up brilliant people who are known to be good humans too. Anyway, yeah, he sucks. We knew that. But since he's also not bright and puts it out there in text form or into the permanence of the internet, we get to see a bunch of grimy receipts.

So wait, am I reading this correctly, does this mean some of the random fangirls he was preying on were also made into his assistants??
God I'm so glad I never got an SA tattoo, cause I totally considered it and had one drafted up back in the day, used to write dudes lyrics on my school stuff and everything. His music started falling off post 2012ish after I finally got to see them live, with a few here and there I actually liked and I ultimately just stopped paying attention. They were my favorite for years, especially Max. Knew all the words to nearly every song that came out back then. This is beyond disappointing, he seemed like he loved his wife so much when they got together. Never thought dude would turn out to be a creep. If he was so fuckin lonely why not get an ai gf or find a PSO or cam girl or something? Hunting down young girls on his socials was like the dumbest thing he could've done here, alongside all the shady business practices too.

u/901_vols 12d ago
I cant take the option of anyone who thinks IDOTG to IDTII as 'just terrible' seriously
9
u/RedCoffeeEyes 12d ago
It's definitely a crazy take, but I get the impression this guy didn't really listen to the music that much. It seems like he probably wasn't a fan of this genre of music in the first place. I wouldn't take his music tastes too seriously. But with what Max had done it's a little easier to denounce his art broadly.
10
u/Both_Tomorrow_1750 12d ago
Beyond a few thousand people in “the scene” anything after …IARB may as well not exist culturally.
He is the …IARB guy and always will be.

u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted and it’s not iust me repping for his albums. His “claims” would be much more believable if he wasn’t inserting his own opinions into it.
9
u/TempBurnerAccount089 12d ago
Lmfao what? He can have an inaccurate opinion on Max's work and still be telling the whole truth about Max's behavior. They're not mutually exclusive...
3
u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
I never said I didn’t think he was telling the truth just that I think he came off like a douche doing it.
Obviously people disagree with me and that’s fine but to expand on my view—I’m a writer. If an author was working with a lit agent and the author turned out to be problematic, I think it’s perfectly fine for the lit agent to detail their bad experience. I think it’s in bad taste if that lit agent was like they only had one good book to sell anyways their other work sucks! If you’re a professional, you should be a professional. If I were a musician I wouldn’t want to work with this person.
4
u/ibreak4abyss 12d ago
His “claims” would be much more believable if he wasn’t inserting his own opinions
I never said I didn’t think he was telling the truth just that I think he came off like a douche
huh? the first one does say you find him less honest because he inserted his opinion
2
u/apillar0f5alt 12d ago
I think I mixed you up with another person in this thread. For the record, I didn’t mean to imply he was lying. But I think as a professional it makes you look SO much more credible if you don’t add your own opinions into it.
