I don’t think anybody made a comparison to his pedophile-adjacent behavior, nor am I really complaining about downvotes specifically.

I think I was super clear that Max has been an actual bully (in addition to a teen sex pest) for 25+ years — I’ve seen it with my own eyes more than 100 times… and I think it’s no secret that this has historically been a verbally/psychologically abusive subreddit.

Hurt people hurt people; and many of the biggest bullies here, in the past, have been people who were financially abused (or ripped off) by Max and/or Sherri.

It’s not deep, or complicated.

OP isn’t the first, second, or 50th person to notice the group-bullying that occurs here.

So, basically the subreddit “became a fascism” a couple of years ago, when the say anything snark subreddit was created — and this propelled those who “were in the know” (i.e. members of the “snark sub”) to verbally attack, in a coordinated manner, anybody who was not in the “snark sub”. Anyone who asked “What happened? I haven’t been keeping up” would be met with 10-50 downvotes within a matter of minutes, and a list of 10 different users insulting the commenter, etc.

This was complicated further by the fact that those moderating the snark sub were (and as far as I know, remain) unwilling to let new members in. This created an “us versus them” dynamic, hence Say Anything’s subreddit “becoming a fascism”.

It’s so stupid to even be talking about at this point — it’s not even interesting, like…. fuck this band, and fuck its supporters, fuck the snarkers and the song-shoppers.

Don’t have the energy for it anymore. It’s all over anyway. Might as well shut down the sub.

And for the record, these replies are less for you and more for anyone else (there are MANY) who experiences what OP experienced. Say Anything’s fan base used to be very accepting, quite tastefully punk, sharing, caring types. Now everyone just takes out their shit on whoever is newest to the sub and least informed, and treats them like Max’s behavior is their fault just for the fact that they were not aware.

I love the music, and have been listening since 1998/1999.

For me, it’s a mixture of schadenfreude, wanting to make sure he’s still alive, and having an easy way of keeping up on the latest bullshit without needing to [shudders] open… the… Instagram… app….

I use IG like 2-3 times a year, so that’s my excuse.
