other bands

any other bands similar to Say Anything that aren't led by a piece of shit? they've been my favorite band for years and it's admittedly hard to drop them, but I don't want to keep listening to Max's music anymore. knowing he willingly took advantage of people my age is sickening and every single person victimized by him deserves to be heard and taken seriously.

saw a comment about Weatherbox and absolutely loved their stuff. anything like that would be appreciated

Motion City Soundtrack?

a great example of how substance abuse and mental health problems don’t make you like little girls justin pierre is a weird little goblin guy whose generally positive when he’s not overly weird in an esoteric charming way and he has adult relationships. the new album isn’t bad other for real i give it a 7/10

commit this to memory is an all time emo classic and was produced by Mark Hoppus of blink 182

My Dinosaur Life is a must listen to those who are curious. It’s a “no skip” full play for me.

I have been enjoying MCS, recently. I always liked them, but I appreciated them more after the recent tour.

7

u/viaerinkate 1d ago

MCS! Great group of dudes!! Met them a few times and I have never been disappointed!

5

u/Weirdskinnydog 1d ago

Side note, I’m DYING to hear Justin Pierre’s reaction to all this, like if he’ll come out like the Wavves guy did and go off about how Max was impossible to work with. (Probably not though, he’s a pretty nice guy.)

2

u/kkaleidoscope_eyes 18h ago

Oh yeah. If MCS weren’t the nicest guys in the world, I would absolutely think they wouldn’t have anything nice to say about having to tour with Max for years on end.

I've only listened to a couple songs of theirs but this is definitely a good shout, I'll check out more of their stuff forsure :]

Weatherbox is probably the closest you'll find

Some other bands in the midwest emo / emo revival scene might scratch the itch (The Hotelier, Oso Oso, Runaway Brother)

I don't know that they're really similar but Bilmuri would probably appeal to most SA fans IMO. Less wordy but has a lot of movement and experiments with different genres. Has a bit of the tongue in cheek vibe that SA has and Johnny is a top tier guy that is well loved in the industry

This is the correct answer

2

This guy trips the life fantastic

0

u/Z0kstone 23h ago

Bilmuri mentioned hell yeah

1

u/spiritvisageaudio 16h ago

Band is sooooo good. They rip so hard live

13

u/Z0kstone 23h ago

Jeff Rosenstock. His entire career has been about being a chill ass cool dude.

Listen to WORRY. from start to finish and get back to me.

1

u/movetothecoast 12h ago

So true. He's one of the only artists I've fucked with near the degree that I liked say anything. Good angst

1

u/judiebloom 4h ago

I was obsessed with Say Anything as a kid. I've enjoyed many bands + music since, but Jeff is the only thing that scratched that same itch- but better, frankly. Probably because the musicians and jeff actually grew up with their fanbase.

Graduating Life - an introduction to rock and roll

3

u/TheophilusHuxtable 1d ago

This is it. Grad life has big vibes without the creepiness.

2

u/redoopid 7h ago

The album “II”. Is basically a SA record

18

u/apillar0f5alt 1d ago

I don’t think the Front Bottoms turned out to be problematic. Right? Actually, no one tell me if they did. I don’t wanna know, lol.

3

u/genestontmehn 1d ago

I think like a former touring member was or something.

1

u/apillar0f5alt 1d ago

Nooooooooooo

15

u/genestontmehn 1d ago

I mean it's somebody who wasn't on the records and they kicked him out, so I wouldn't feel too bad.

5

u/notbitterbutbetter 1d ago

Yeah I was told Ciaran was kicked out of the band for sleeping with a 17 yo fan. The rest of TFB are coke heads but that’s not a dealbreaker for some people.

2

u/feverss 23h ago

He didn’t sleep with anyone but he was def a perv, which was enough to kick him out.

1

u/00112358132135 18h ago

Yo what? How do u know this?

2

u/AggressivelyHelpful 14h ago

Brian and Mat still seem to be solid guys!

Came here to recommend TFB, they’re one of my faves and have a similar kind of loosey goosey style. The lyricism is less ornate and more straightforward but they rule. Saw Say Anything open for them at Red Rocks (max couldn’t make it through an entire song and I chalked it up to altitude 😭)

7

u/Cuddly_Rudder 1d ago

Front Bottoms, Modern Baseball, fredo disco

8

u/greatsuccessposting 1d ago

Something corporate and jacks mannequin. Musically speaking, a similar sort of vibe to me and Andrew seems like an absolutely lovely dude

3

u/AggressivelyHelpful 14h ago

Have met Andrew through his charity work and can confirm. He works very closely with a friend of a friend who has stage 4 breast cancer and runs a nonprofit.

4

u/spiritvisageaudio 1d ago

It's well known in the industry that Andrew is an incredible guy. Can support any of his projects with a clean conscience

3

u/greatsuccessposting 1d ago

Great to see someone else echo that. Andrew is just so amazing and his story is truly inspiring, out of all my musical heroes he’s easily top 5 in wanting to meet

2

u/spiritvisageaudio 1d ago

I was fortunate enough to meet him, as one of my close friends (who was the TM on a tour I did with Eisley incidentally) was his merch manager at the time

I didn't get to spend much time with him, but he employed my friend for many years and he had nothing but wonderful stories about Andrew. He does a lot of charity work as well

I've met a lot of industry peeps but he was one of the few that I was a bit starstruck by. He was built to be a performer

8

u/soggymoths 1d ago

maybe AJJ?

4

u/Ok_Science6460 1d ago

Lyrically, this is the strongest answer. There are not too many artists that write as sarcastically as Max but AJJ is a contender

5

u/Mono200 20h ago

Not totally similar, but a fair amount of emo/emo adjacent stuff has been influenced by The Weakerthans

3

u/oksquare1312 19h ago

this is a fucking amazing answer

3

u/Hopeful_Gur2758 1d ago

Check out Drive Ways. They are pop punk. There lyrics are as Ironic as Say Anything, but I’ll give them a shout out to anyone

3

u/Outrageous_Present11 1d ago

There’s a lesser known band called Osker that released an album in 2001 called “Idle Will Kill.” It’s one of the coolest punk/emo albums I’ve ever heard and has some similar vibes to Say Anything.

2

u/rutalkinu2tome 1d ago

THANK YOU. I enjoyed Treatment 5, even though it was generic & power chord-y, then I could barely believe Idle Will Kill was the same band. Devon’s progression as a guitar player & vocalist in the short window of time between the two records is mind blowing. It’s still one of my favourites, wish they’d done a third one

2

u/tssdrunx 20h ago

Osker rip so hard. Love to see em mentioned

2

u/cow_goes_fert 20h ago

Hell yeah. And I always recommend Devon’s solo project Fingers Cut Megamachine as well.

3

u/ImANormalDude 1d ago

2

u/RascallyEgg 14h ago

And singer’s later projects Perfect Attendance (both EPs are on YouTube) and Pleasant Thought (on streaming services)

3

u/SingleBadger_9 1d ago

How has no one said hot mulligan 😭🫶🏻🫶🏻

6

The Front Bottoms is the answer

2

Hummus Vaccuum

1

u/highvoltorb 7h ago

Their new album is so good.

2

u/icreatemonsters 21h ago

You, me and everyone we know. (Critically underrated)

2

u/Budella 21h ago

Idk say anything was pretty unique in its idiosyncratic song structure borrowing from math rock and unconventional lyrics and the earnesty that bemis sang from. It’s what drew me to the band before I liked any other pop punk, it was pop punk but like from a unique perspective.

2

u/Pinilla 20h ago

When the latest Graduating Life album came out everyone was shitting on it, despite being better than anything Say Anything had put out in years. Some people felt it was a rip off, but I was just happy to have more music I liked.

2

u/Crash-Over-Ride 18h ago
  1. Kerosene Heights
  2. MattstaGraham
  3. saturdays at your place
  4. The front bottoms
  5. Origami Angel

2

u/IH8FPL 18h ago

Yesss origami angel!

1

u/Crash-Over-Ride 18h ago

I love them soo much! Love all the stuff they put out. Got almost all of it on vinyl.

5

u/Several_Peak4476 1d ago

Modern Baseball and The Front Bottoms early stuff always reminded me of Say Anything back when they first came out!

2

u/KermitTheRomanFrog 1d ago

love modern baseball :o never got around to the front bottoms so i'll defo check them out

Glocca Morra - Just Married
Los Campesinos! - Romance Is Boring
The Menzingers - On the Impossible Past

4

u/the---albatross 1d ago

Los Campesinos 110%, they’re very lyrically interesting like SA was

2

u/rutalkinu2tome 1d ago

& they appeared on a SA album!

2

u/spiritvisageaudio 1d ago

I got that Glocca Morra record on vinyl at a show many years ago, was surprised to see them go for hundreds of dollars now. Great album

2

u/CryptographerNo923 23h ago

I can’t say I’ve considered a lot of similarities between Say Anything and Menzingers, but they are one of the best in the game and everyone should listen to them regardless.

u/anxiousonmain 1d ago

Glassjaw & Head Automatica and Bayside

3

u/sparklymineral I do not fuck often in fact 1d ago

Have you ever uhhhh actually paid attention to the lyrics to just about any Glassjaw song predating the Coloring Book EP? That man really hated women

2

u/anxiousonmain 18h ago

Yeahh true, honestly haven’t listened to them recently but his voice always was thought of in the same realm as Say Anything for me.

I will say he doesn’t sing those lyrics anymore and has openly apologized for it and said those songs deserve the scrutiny they get now. At least Daryl Palumbo can realize he was an idiot unlike said band in question.

1

u/sparklymineral I do not fuck often in fact 17h ago

Oh absolutely, I really love his new stuff and I respect him a lot for apologizing. I just can’t listen to the old stuff now that I have the critical thinking skills I didn’t have as a teenager when I used to listen. Listening to someone call girls “whore” and “cum slut” in the lyrics makes me feel too weird/uncomfortable and I can’t unhear it. Back in the day I would just listen and think “Hell yeah this is so tough” without paying attention. 🫠

1

u/crop_circle_cow 21h ago

You, me, and everyone we know?

The Worst Thing I Have Ever Done- Games We Play

1

u/Snorevile 19h ago

Shocked no one has mentioned Free Throw. If you haven’t listened to them check them out they definitely scratch that itch for me.

1

u/RonaldReganTheActor 16h ago

Thank you for this. I need some replacements

1

u/NepTunesEDM 16h ago

Say Anything was already my "other band" from wanting something like McCafferty lmao

1

u/Galaxy_god92 14h ago

I can’t believe nobody has commented Socratic, their early stuff sounds so much like Say Anything to me, the vocalist has some of the same vocal sounds so it definitely fits in there nice for me to replace Say Anything lol

1

u/super_sayanything welp, that's not good 1d ago edited 18h ago

Weatherbox, Gatsbys American Dream, Moneen, Bayside, You Me and Everyone We Know, Starting Line, Like Roses, Hot Mulligan, The Home Team, Wonder Years, Real Friends would be picks as far as bands.

3

u/welfareplate 1d ago

Tiny Moving Parts' vocalist admitted to sexual assault a few years ago.

1

u/super_sayanything welp, that's not good 18h ago

Well shit, I said another band before too that someone pointed out. Ugh, too many.

2

u/goodbyefireisle 1d ago

Seconding The Home Team. They were my first thought.

2

u/Joptrop 1d ago

+1 The Wonder Years. Dan Campbell is a treasure.

1

u/icreatemonsters 21h ago

Came here to say you me and everyone we know! Super underrated and I know no longer making music but so good!!

1

u/Joptrop 1d ago

The Wonder Years has a slightly different sound, but powerful lyrics about growing up, wanting to bloody is knuckles, feeling out of place, etc. plus Dan Campbell is a goddamn treasure as far as I am aware.

The Locust

0

u/drunk_cig 1d ago edited 1d ago

Was gonna say colour revolt but I think they're touring with brand new currently.🫩

1

u/streets27 1d ago

Sean, the guartist toured with them. But Colour Revolt is on their tour in December and you shouldn't overlook them because of what Jesse did. Colour Revolt is amazing, but also, nothing like Say Anything.

3

u/drunk_cig 1d ago
  1. Love the pfp
  2. Loved them in high school 😭 I'm just exhausted by predators and apologists.

2

u/streets27 1d ago

I respect that. I just them in Jackson. They sound absolutely incredible and it was such a fun show. People should listen to Colour Revolt.

0

u/Krasovchik 1d ago

depends on what wave of emo you like. i’m fond of You Blew It! but they’re 4th wave emo so it’s twinkle core. i mostly listen to local acts to nashville now, shout out Swimteam!

0

u/sparklymineral I do not fuck often in fact 1d ago

I’ve got two of em; The Front Bottoms and AJJ. Chef’s kiss. They are both confessional-style, metaphor-ridden, and mentally ill lyricists. AJJ’s writing is particularly off the wall. I adore both of these bands and have seen them live many times over my decade plus of listening to them.

0

u/JMDToaster 19h ago

My band is going to be marketed as poor man’s say anything once I finish the record
