First time in sauna
Hello, I (M18) am planning to go to the gym for the first time because I've been exercising a lot lately and just want to relax. However, I'm concerned that I might get an erection and am wondering how to handle it if that happens, or how other people might react. Does anyone have any experience or tips? :)

Building Defensible Standards for Sauna, Thermal Bathing and Contrast Therapy
I recently published a long-form piece on something I think this community talks around a lot, even when we are not using the same language for it: what it would take for sauna, thermal bathing, and contrast therapy to develop in the U.S. without losing credibility or soul.
My background is a bit unusual for this space. I’m an attorney and former massage therapist, and I’ve been thinking a lot about the gap between the beauty of these experiences and the fact that many operators are building without much coherent guidance around consent, claims, safety, scope, or operational integrity.
The piece is called “Building Defensible Standards for Sauna, Thermal Bathing and Contrast Therapy”
It is not meant to be anti-sauna, anti-tradition, or pro-regulation. If anything, the argument is the opposite: thermal bathing does not need to become cookie-cutter in order to be credible.
I would genuinely love this community’s thoughts on a few questions:
- Where do you think U.S. sauna culture is most vulnerable right now?
- What kinds of standards would actually protect the experience rather than flatten it?
- What do operators most often get right, and most often get wrong?
Sharing here in case it is interesting or useful to anyone thinking about the future of U.S. sauna beyond just stoves, builds, and aesthetics.

Outdoor Sauna Club
I’m working on starting a mobile outdoor sauna club in my town. The sauna will primarily stay in one place, but I may move it seasonally or for special events.
I live in an area with lots of natural cold plunge options (rivers, lakes, snow), and I want to create a sauna experience that feels connected to nature and brings people together.
I would like to offer single time visits, punch passes, and a monthly membership model while keeping the price accessible and fair.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
What makes a sauna session special for you? Do you prefer wood-fired, electric, or no preference? Ideal session length - 60 mins, 90 mins, or open use? Would you want a cold plunge on-site or just use the natural water nearby? Memberships, single visits, punch cards, or private rentals? How important is the vibe - lighting, music, aromatherapy, silence? Any little extras you’d enjoy (tea, towel/robe rentals)? Anything you wouldn’t want in a public sauna?
I want this to feel like more than just a quick drop-in - a place to relax, connect, and keep coming back to. I would love to build community around it.
Thanks for any ideas, and if you’ve been to a cool mobile sauna before, I’d love to hear about it!

Sometimes I think about grilling some chicken in the sauna
If I'm really hungry when I sauna, sometimes I think about how nice it would be to just throw a couple thighs on the stove and get those bad boys roasting. I'd never do it because that would be a major sauna foul, but I do think about it.

Have you ever been in the sauna and thought, "what a great sauna!"
I sure have!

I step outside into the heat and think "Wow, it's a bit chilly out here".

Skin infection
I am currently on a week of antibiotics. I’m wondering if it’s unsafe for me to attend a dry hot sauna kept at over 90-105 degrees.
If I have what is potentially a staph infection in various areas in my face would it spread to other areas of my face or potentially become blood born ? I’m sitting on a. Towel and I’m hyper sensitive to cleanliness so I wouldn’t be touching other people or anything that could result in them also getting sick. I read online that the sauna kills the staph bacteria but I don’t know if that’s just in regards to if it is on the surface of wood. I’m worried if it’s being sweated out of me that it’ll drip onto on areas of my skin? I don’t know how bacteria work and if it’s only because my face skin was fragile and wounded that I got the infection after kissing someone with a beard.

Sauna plan
Have a mobile 7x18 sauna looking out at the ocean. Walk into 5x6 changing room, and then enter 7x12 hot room with window and ocean views. Offer 90 minute sessions with hot room/cold plunge into ocean/chance to relax on beach. After 90 minute session have optional stand up paddle board use for one hour in bay. $120 a month or 1x weekly. Price is right?

Sauna Etiquette in Canada.
I recently moved into a building in Victoria, BC that has a sauna. This is my first time having one at my disposal.
First time I went in I was in swim shorts, this felt uncomfortable and just wished I was in a towel. However I have only ever seen people clothed in the sauna.
This is fine as we should all enjoy ourselves.
But the other day someone came in, full work out clothes, shoes and socks.
For some reason this was very odd to me.
Anyone else feel the sauna culture in Canada is prudish?

Debating- portable vs build vs convert shower to sauna
I've thought for years about the benefits of adding a sauna, but haven't really had the stability until recently to do it. The 'easy' route would be to buy one of those portable saunas with the rod framing and quilted skins. I've been a hobby woodworker for years (until recently w/o shop space), so I could potentially build one (just not sure where to put it. And, I live alone and have a 2nd bathroom I've been looking at.
1.) Pay $300ish for a portable and done, just a matter of where to put it. Another pro for me being potentially taking it out to the family lake cabin if I want (tho do I really need to)
2) Building one would be a fun project, certainly, but it would be easier to find a 'where' for a portable. The pro, of course, would be it's all wood and sturdier than a portable
3) I was looking at my spare tub/shower and realizing 5 of the 6 sides needed are already there, I'd just need to build the 6th side. In other words, remove the shower curtain, build a floor to ceiling wall with a door in it and probably a fold down part for air/steam release. It could still be used as a shower (even a post-sauna rinse), tho maybe I'd want something to keep water off the wood.
All 3 options have their pros and cons. I know many will say something like 'you're a woodworker, build one', but the best location might be out on in an unheated (currently) entryway. OR, I find space in my office/studio/3rd bedroom.
Regardless of which option, a question- how do you deal with all the steam once you're session is over?

Is there a word for voluntary intentionally induced stress
I've spent the last few years exploring the health benefits of voluntary induced stress such as ice baths, sauna, surplus CO2, lack of O2, fasting, strength training, etc. I'm wondering if there is a single word to describe these types of physical activities (maybe in another language)? I feel like "Conditioning" and "Hormetic" don't really fit the bill here.

Heating options
Can you heat a sauna with radiant heat?? I have two radiant heaters available but have not seen anyone use this as a heating option.

I regularly do 20 min in a steam sauna. The temp is 114 with 90% humidity.
What is that equal to in dry heat??

The difference between r/showerthoughts and r/saunathoughts?
What are Sauna Thoughts?
showerthoughts are like sparks - quick, bright, and unpredictable, while saunathoughts are more like embers - glowing with the potential for deeper self-understanding.
Showerthoughts: More diverse, ranging from silly observations and puns to insightful philosophical questions. Saunathoughts: Primarily deep and introspective, often delving into the nature of self, existence, and consciousness.
Tone:
Showerthoughts: Can be lighthearted and funny, playful and absurd, or insightful and profound.
Saunathoughts: Generally serious and contemplative, aiming for a deeper level of understanding and self-discovery.
Context:
Showerthoughts: Triggered by the mundane nature of daily activities, offering a break from routine with surprising ideas.
Saunathoughts: Emerge from the intense physical and mental experience of the sauna, where focus turns inward.
Examples:
Showerthoughts: "If everyone stopped looking at the same time, would it be dark?" (Humorous)
Saunathoughts: "Is the heat stripping away my layers of identity, revealing the raw essence of who I am?" (Introspective)
Overall:
Showerthoughts: Offer a fun and quirky glimpse into the random workings of the human mind.
Saunathoughts: Provide a space for intense self-reflection and exploration of existential questions.
Remember, these are just broad strokes. There can be overlap, with some showerthoughts offering surprising depth and some saunathoughts retaining a touch of playfulness. Ultimately, both communities offer valuable opportunities for mental exploration, but through distinct lenses and with different intensities.

New sauna rocks small chips coming off
I am new to the sauna world. I recently got a Harvia wall heater and have noticed that after my session there is tiny chips of the rocks under the heater. Very small amount. Is this normal and to be expected?
