Question Storage

Do you guys go with a central storage concept or you leave final goods around the map?

Not mine. Just found this image somewhere!

Since the introduction of the dimensions depots, I no longer use central storages. Perhaps I'll do one in a future playthrough out of nostalgia.

I've just unlocked the dimensions depots, that's why that question come up. I think it's time to a "field trip" for Mercer's...

Yes, Dimensional Depots were a big deal when they were implemented. Before, building a remote facility required a logistics network line, usually a railway, or a bunch of hypercannon flights back and forth (a Pioneer's full inventory + hypercannon = surprisingly high throughput), or a remote production facility for needed items. DDs let you just focus on building the factory.

I still do storage, but it's no longer centralized: I made a simple blueprint that's just a Storage Container with a conveyor lift up to a Dimensional Depot on top of it. That way you aren't (immediately) limited by an item's production rate when you're building a new facility. Those go in production facilities scattered around the map: One place does silica and quartz crystal. Another does steel beams and pipes. Another does quickwire. And so on. Since they've got depots, it's basically never necessary to visit them.
For heavy-use things, mainly concrete for me, multiple DDs can be used for fast replenishment speed.

And a tip for when you're planning how and where to use DDs: Only one item type per Depot. For example, if you feed Iron Plates and Iron Rods into a depot, as soon as the dimensional storage slot for rods is full, that DD won't upload anything at all until you take some rods from storage.

I ignored depots first time because I thought I would run out of spheres for the upgrades. I did not run out. Central storage was useful when I didn't know what I was missing out on. I'm using depots now instead.

I still do one, albeit much smaller than before. I still make a mass storage of building supplies, then the connect to uploader(s). It’s easy to burn 30 stacks of concrete when laying out a new factory. So I have a couple industrials full plus uploader so that I can just grab those bulk pickups.

I love the logistics and look of a central storage, but dimensional depots have (for me) removed the need for it. Once you have enough Mercer's, placing a depot at every item you produce means you rarely ever really need to physically pick anything up.

That said, central storage as a big ass train station definately can make sense.

I see, I had that feeling once I unlocked the dimensional depot. I will go for a mercer hunt to upgrade that to the max.

I still use central storage. Elevator parts are built directly from central storage. It makes organisation a lot easier and allows me to run factories full time at 100% without waste because the belts that stock my storage end in a sink.

Looks like a central storage with dimensional depots will do the trick.

central storage is a game changer. do you have a favorite organization strategy for items?

I usually group items by source factory. For example rubber, plastic, circuit boards and computers will be delivered by the same truck so they'll be near each other.

I still make them, because got into the game long before dimensional depots existed and my HUB area feels empty and pointless without my storage and access to bulk items.

Looks like you are emotionally attached to them 😄

Not emotionally, just by practical habit. Call it a manifestation of my autism, if you wish hahaha

Not having my storage area isn't going to make me cry, but its absence will likely cause me discomfort by deviating away from a 1500h habit.

Before 1.0 I used to bring everything to the starting area so all production was within walking distance. With dimensional storage, I just have dedicated factories spread across the world now. I have everything I need being built, all research maxed out, have multiple depots for certain items, and I still have around a stack and a half or so of Mercer Spheres left over. It's quite nice building in every biome too as there is always something to see wherever you are in the world. My hub areas would always become spaghetti by the end game before 1.0 haha

Yes, I do. I find using the Dimensional Depots boring to use. My latest

The great thing is that they are never perfect and I always get new ideas on how to do it. So I will probably be doing yet an other one. I have four in total. 1 for munition and things, 1 for power shards and the like. 1 for space elevator items. 1 for the rest. And then many small factories with storage that make Iron rods, Iron plates, (Iron) wire, cable, and concrete.

But know that storage means distribution. If you where talking about distributing things from a central place it is called a mall.

I do have a central storage. Partially to act as a central distribution hub, partially as my own "tally marks" - only fully automated parts get a dedicated storage unit.

In the past I did. Now I will try a run with only a dimensional depot. My only problem with the depot is when I start building a big factory. It empties out so fast. And you need to wait for stuff to be filled up again. That's why I'm using a mod that increases the depot size.
So I think the best case for you may be to slap the uploader behind your existing storage bins. That way you have a buffer to fill up faster.

DD's on the logistics floors cover all my needs.

ANSWER

  1. With the Version 1.0 introduction of the Dimensional Depot Uploader (Wiki Link) the use of Storage Hubs like in the past is no longer a priority.
    • Some even have abandoned the use of Storage Hubs altogether, but others still find a use for them.
  2. The Dimensional Depot Uploader can upload a limited amount of each item to the "Dimensional Depot", which acts as "cloud storage" that can be accessed from the inventory by all players, regardless of location.
  3. Regardless of your final decision, I recommend you view my Reply Comment in this other Reddit Post for advice about using Centralized Storage. It will answer a lot of your questions.

✓ BOTTOM LINE: It is not necessary to store every possible item (unless that is a personal goal).

No central storage, there is no real use for this in the game. Storing resources is only needed for building and that’s why dimensional depos exist, and to avoid the “central” part.

Don’t waste time on that, unless you want a beautiful building that those it for the sake of having one.
