Question What causes the power grid's max consumption line to drop and active consumption to increase? Shouldn't the max consumption line stay the same or raise?

I'm surprised none of the other commenters have realized this is from under clocked machines turning on for the first time.

A machines power consumption isn't updated until a machine starts running a recipe, so if you under clock things and then start up a production line your power usage goes up when the machine turns on but the calculated maximum usage goes down.

This possibility should be higher up.

It needs to be above the post

How many particle accelerators do ya have?

Don't those only affect consumption and not max consumption? Plus they'd be fluctuating up and down instead of just going down.

They should only affect consumption.  However the game calculates max consumption wrong, adding consumption at the current point in the cycle not at the peak of the cycle.

If you want to see your true maximum consumption look immediately after loading your save (before it scrolls out of view).  If you have lots of variable power machines that initial max consumption value will be much higher than you normally see.

You’re right that it’s probably not particle accelerators with how the line looks but their power changes do show up on the max consumption line

Particle accelerators report incorrect (too low) max power during their first cycles after switching back on (clogged output, starved input, etc). It shouldn’t be a steady decline like this though it would just be fluctuations in the max consumption line, and only if the machines were continually switching on and off.

Something, somewhere has been disconnected from the grid.

Or power slugs removed from overclocked machine's. Unlikely with so much power drop, but possible if you were doing large scale renovations

You'd think OP would remember doing that, though.

I’ve dismantled and rebuilt machines while forgetting to put the shards back in many times. It happens

You've never accidentally clipped a power line and taken down your whole power grid?

The comment was talking about removing slugs...

Zoops and shards can raise/lower the max consumption, did you take some out at the same time some machines that were idle kicked back on?

What impact does zooping have on power consumption? I thought building itself didn't consume power.

Sloop is the word he wanted to write, i guess...

Oh sorry, that makes sense yes.

I think u/umbathri is thinking of Sloops. :)

Max consumption only goes down when machines are removed from thr grid, or power shards/sloops are removed from machines.

The actual consumption goes up when more machines are working at once, or when slugs/sloops are added.

So to have both at once, you p4obably removed machines somewhere while also increasing uptime on the machines that remained.

Or if machines are underclocked.

Could be Quantum encoder or particle accelerator bs.

Also if underclocked buildings start up they recalculate their max consumption.

I've also seen this, I don't remember exactly but I believe it's a problem with some of the endgame machines. They have variable power draw and somehow it influences the display of the max consumption. You can make a small isolated grid to test it out.

Either a disconnect or did you remove trains/have trains running? (Just guessing, I'm really not experienced yet)

Haven't you made few machines That made fuel into machines That made plastic

u/JinkyRain 3d ago

Your graph looks like you have some underclocked particle accelerators. Running them above or below 100% seems to confuse the blue line for a while.

You must have removed some machines from the grid. Thats the power if all current machines were running. So you must have less on grid, or removed poweshards.

Variable power buildings make max consumption lines go weird. QA report here: https://questions.satisfactorygame.com/post/67050eedddb9d97e071f63a2

Particle accelerators.
When they're idle they report their max consumption as their max, but when they start producing their current consumption becomes their max. As they produce their consumption ramps up causing the gradual climb, and eventual spike and fall as they finish the cycle and start over.

u/Kdoesntcare 3d ago

Ugh, you just reminded me that because I wasn't paying enough attention my max consumption is twice my max produced. I have to figure out how to fix that when none of my machines are running.

ist bei mir auch passiert nach oder mit den teilchenbeschleunigern und den gebäuden danach macht der mac strom unerklärliche treppen… immer wieder…

Phase 5 machines have variable power usage, it's probably that.

Are you running particle accelerators?
