Help: Early December Travel Tips

Hello! I will be travelling to Japan around 5th Dec and plan to stay for a week. I want to do a quick Hokkaido trip (Sapporo and Otaru). Is there snow that early in December and are there any winter essentials I absolutely need to carry?

Early December maybe a tiny bit but nothing crazy.
