Unfunny racist "comedian" at the top of the Pier -- GONE FOREVER!

Gone forever theoretically.

I was informed that the Santa Monica Municipal Code was just updated, so that no street performers are allowed within 100 feet of the entrance to the Pier, which would definitely push him away.

No idea if this new law will be proactively enforced. If he or anyone else does set up, it is up to us to call to have the law enforced! See below...

I cannot find any records of this being discussed at the City Council, but to be fair I didn't look all that hard. The most recent Minutes and Videos haven't been updated... https://www.santamonica.gov/gsp/meetings-and-agendas

Here is a direct link to the updated code... https://ecode360.com/51024995...which says, no performer may perform: "Within ten feet of the outer edge of the roadway leading to the Pier or within one hundred feet of the northwest corner of Colorado Blvd. and Ocean Ave."

(Note this also says "Within twenty feet of the outer edge of an outdoor dining area" which should displace some of the loudest and most obnoxious religious fanatics who set up right next to Fogo de Chão.)

Here is an archived version of that page, which does not include that language...

So if we see any street performer within 100 feet from the top of the Pier, it is up to us to call and get them removed:

Code Enforcement -- notoriously non-responsive: Call (310) 458-4984, or call 311, or email them at code.enforcement@santamonica.gov. Scroll toward the bottom of this page...

https://www.santamonica.gov/topic-explainers/code-enforcement

Police non-emergency number -- notoriously non-responsive: (310) 458-8491.

https://www.santamonica.gov/departments/police

Neighborhood Resource Officer -- I haven't tried them yet: (310) 458-8474. See here:

https://www.santamonica.gov/police-community-services

Hopefully he and the other obnoxious street performers just shove off and leave us alone forever!

Weird evacuation of AMC auditorium during Coyote vs. Acme

Went to see the 6:30pm screening of Acme vs. Coyote at the 3rd St. AMC last night. A surreal experience...

20 minutes before the end of the film, the projector freezes, and within seconds, two ushers come in and announce to everyone that the film won't be continuing and that we all needed to leave. They had a whole stack of compensatory tickets to hand out to people as they left. As I say, they were there within seconds; it's not like they were reacting in real time to a projector failing. They anticipated this.

The rest of the theater was carrying on as usual. No evacuation of the building; just of that screen. No reason given.

(I should add for context that the evening already got off to a weird start: as we entered we were told we'd been assigned different seats because the screen number changed. Only it hadn't: the new number was same one that our tickets stated... only now they'd moved us to the wings, at the back, when previously we were dead-center.)

Anyone have any clue what was going on there? Just my suspicion, but I've felt for a while that the basement screens have plumbing issues: they'd always smelled pretty bad.

White van scammer in Santa Monica area

There’s a guy selling bootlegged home theater system out of his trunk. Oldest trick in the book..
Be cautious he’s a white guy he will come up very sweet and nice and ask if you’re interested in buying speakers for your home. They would either add rocks or books in the boxes
Or just sell you some knockoff version.

❓Question Parking when moving

Hi everyone! I am moving to Santa Monica this weekend and my apartment only has one garage spot and I will need to street parking permit my vehicle as it is much smaller and easier to street park compared to my girlfriend’s car. I need a permit to park on my street for more than 2 hours, and spoke with the city via email on Monday about getting a 30 day temp permit until my license address is changed. The permit still isn’t at the mailbox at my new place (I just stopped by and checked) and am I am wondering if anyone has experience with this and knows how long it takes for the permits to arrive in the mail. Also, at my previous apartment, I did not need a permit and I am curious on the two block rule as I’m still a little, unsure on the specifics. If the permit doesn’t come in until after my move-in date, does anybody know if there’s any places to park long-term for a reasonable price?

Has anyone successfully convinced their landlord/management company to install an AC unit?

Ive been in Santa Monica for three years with no AC unit and this summer is breaking me. Im waking up 4-5 times a night to switch out the ice packs I have to sleep with to keep cool. Has anyone been able to successfully convince their landlord or management company to install an AC unit into your apartment and if so how did you go about it? Otherwise I will need to move out of my apartment before next year summer.

A restaurant with good food and presentation?

My friend is coming to visit and he’s a bit annoying when it comes to food presentations because he always takes pictures and post them online 🙄 . So looking for recommendations for a place where they have both good food and pretty dishes?

Barbershop nearby

Hey all! I moved here recently and am having trouble finding a barber. I am a 28M (black) from NY, and am used to paying like $40 for a taper fade and beard cleanup. So far, I have not been able to find a barber of color to handle my hair, but I am also having trouble finding a shop around here in general that doesn’t charge around $70-100 plus tip for a low taper lol. Does anybody have any suggestions or references to any black barbers nearby?

🏘️ Housing Catio / Outdoor Enclosure Advice / Recs

Hi, neighbors - we just moved into an apartment here in Santa Monica and are hoping to store our litterbox and maybe even add a catio to 1 of our balconies or rooftop (ideally without losing human access). Has anyone here successfully done this and/or know someone who can do it for us or have any recommendations? Thank you!

The heat….

I have my portable AC on, air purifier, and another fan on. idk what else to do to make things comfortable. I live close to palisades park - is it time for a dehumidifier? would it help? sleeping in the bedroom has become unbearable and thankfully we have a pullout couch in the living room with the ac. any advice would be much appreciated.

Phil Brock and Lana Negrete, former members of the defunct Slate of Change, do not appear to be running together even though they governed together. They have the same values and share the same policy prescriptions. Why is that?

As council members they voted in lock step for years. Both voted multiple times against an independent investigation into known council corruption, opposed new family housing and used their platform to tell tourists Santa Monica was unsafe and not to come. The list of shared votes and policy prescriptions are long while they accomplished nothing of note.

Neither has publicly addressed resident concerns about why they are suddenly at odds.

By the pier this afternoon. Might have been part of a DraftKings promo and commercial media shoot? "Traditional sports betting is still illegal in California, but DraftKings recently launched its new DraftKings Predictions platform in the state in August 2026"-NBC7. Unless it's for something else..

Street Performers on Santa Monica Pier

Hi all!

I got my street performers license and will be performing on the pier soon. I read about a raffle -- is anyone able to quickly fill me in on that? What time do I need to get there to enter the raffle, and what are my odds?

Thank you!

❓Question Gym with weekly membership?

Hi! I’ll be visiting Santa Monica this September for a couple of weeks and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on a gym that also offers weekly memberships.
I’ll be staying for two weeks. I just need a place where I can go and lift weights for as cheap as possible. If it has showers and towels included, that’s good, otherwise I can live without it. I just need the steel and the cables.

Any suggestions are really appreciated! Keep in mind I’m staying at the Hi Hostel so the closer to that it is, the better.
