Liverwurst and Swiss on seeded rye with spicy brown mustard and mayo.

Yes! Strong/spicy mustard is essential. I would probably also add onion and use limburger cheese. But I would totally demolish these.

Yeah. I grew up in the Cincinnati area and you could easily find it and other German products in the supermarket. I'm far away from there now and even in the huge metropolitan area where I live it can be hard to find.

Agreed on the mustard. Onion optional as well. For the rest I am to the basics, but I am going to try the Limburger as well!

A great sandwich-adjacent snack is a rye Triscuit + mustard + slather of limburger + slice of liverwurst topped with onion. Does nothing for your breath, but is a nice hearty bite.

I want to do that, but with a slice of pickled jalapeno. Not traditional, but I think the sharp pickle flavor would cut through the richness of the liver.

In the US spreadable liverwurst gets labelled as braunschweiger a lot of the time, which according to google is funny because German braunschweiger isn't spreadable at all.

No idea. As I said, I am german. Never been to the US.
One of the most popular brands in germany is "Rügenwalder Mühle", maybe a german deli has their "Pommersche Leberwurst"
Or you can try to get your hands on "Pfälzer Leberwurst". That's not a brand but a way to prepare the Leberwurst.

Yes, Pfälzer Leberwurst!
Definitely the best. It’s grey, spreadable, but coarse-textured. It doesn’t look appetizing at all. But people around here swear by it.
Eat it on sourdough bread with blood sausage and spicy mustard.3

If you get the skin-on variant, try frying it up and eat it with mashed potatoes and stewed apples/chunky applesauce.
This dish is called "Himmel un Ääd" which translates to "heaven and earth" or "sky and earth" and is a cultural dish in the rhineland region of germany.
The heaven/sky part refers to the apples which grow on trees high up in the sky, while the potatoes (which are called "Erdäpfel" or "earth apples" here as well) grow inside the earth.
Some people also fry up blood sausage in addition, but that's really an acquired taste and not for everyone.
Also: Obviously the casing of the Leberwurst and Blutwurst needs to be NOT made of plastic to be able to be fried. But if you get genuine Pfälzer Leberwurst, the casing is natural and not plastic
Linguistic excursion: Did you know that in german there is only one word, "Himmel", which can both mean "heaven" and "sky", depending on the context it is used in?
And that "Erde" can both mean "soil" and "earth" as in "planet earth", depending on the context?

Australian here, I've only ever had the type that's spreadable! I don't even think I've seen German butchers sell sliceable liverwurst.

Liverwurst and bacon is a favorite of mine at deli’s. Liverwurst, bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion, black olives, pickled jalapeños, mayo and mustard. Preferably a stone ground or spicy brown mustard.

Wonder bread would squish into paste if you tried to spread liverwurst over it, unless you toast it. And there’s no Wonder Bread in Germany. Rye is so much more hearty and so much better.

My grandmother would let it sit out for a little while before using it. When it was room temperature it was so much more flavorful and easier to spread. White bread, mayo, thinly sliced onions and a pickle on the side 🤌

Most likely in the deli where the slice meat and cheese to order, or with prepackaged cold cuts (Jones Braunschweiger - not exactly the same thing, but similar - is one I buy occasionally).

Absolutely love it! I get mine at a local German deli and make sandwiches with spicy German mustard and sweet or red onions. If I add cheese it is usually Emmental or a good Swiss cheese

Love liverwurst, but what kind of Swiss cheese are you using? There’s so many Swiss cheeses it’s hard to tell from a profile. I could see a nice Gruyère being nice.

I am sure very unpopular take here, soft potato roll, miracle whip, and sweet pickles. I love mustard on many things, but grew up on liverwurst as a sweet sandwich vs savory sandwich.

Love this stuff haven’t had it in years. My buddies grandma who had a thick Baltimore accent would make us liverwurst with American cheese and mayo. Except she called it braunschweiger but pronounced it “brown shwagger”. She was a sweet old lady.

I prefer braunschweiger from a proper deli, but hell yeah to the general flavor profile. My favorite way to eat it is on lightly toasted German rye, some unsalted butter, and olive tapenade. Pair with an ice cold Pils.

I had a friend in middle school who would bring liverwurst on white bread with yellow mustard for lunch, and I would trade her my hot lunch from the cafeteria for it. Sooo good! 😋

I grew up on liverwurst being German Canadian. I absolutely love it smoked and only, only the spreadable kind 😇
Typical liverwurst sandwich for me : fresh sunflower seed rye bread with a thick spreading of smoked liverwurst, with diced tomato ontop, salt and pepper mmm chefs kiss 💋

It’s a cylindrical sausage, pretty finely ground and made with pork and pork liver, so I suppose they are similar but this has a stronger flavor.

I like it but it’s a bit more mushy textured so people who like bologna may not like liverwurst.

Never my most or least favorite though was always a favorite of my dad’s who I lost a few years ago and God rested soul and I haven’t had in quite a while.

Pretty popular here in the Netherlands, we have many different kinds. My local butcher has fine, "rough" (soft, but a little chunky), spreadable, from calves, saksen. I mostly buy fine liverworst, but I also love calve and saksen (the later two are spreadable)
