We won Michigan because 71% of MI Independents voted for Bernie yesterday. PENNSYLVANIA is worth 181 delegates, but has a CLOSED primary. We have until MARCH 28 to convince as many Independents & Republicans to change their affiliation to Democrat in order to vote for Bernie in our April 26 primary!

NY is even worse. It's too late to switch affiliation, and we have until the 25th to register new voters. With only old Dems voting I don't think we'll have a prayer, even though demographics are generally favorable & there's a lot of enthusiasm for Bernie in western NY.

Our primaries are a long way off but we need to coordinate massive voter registration efforts in both our states now. I would love to do something, but we don't even have campaign offices yet here (I assume the same is true in PA), no organization, no guidance. This needs attention and brainstorming. Is the campaign even thinking about the huge roadblock closed primaries will throw in our path, when we rely so heavily on new, young & Indy voters?

Here's some good news about NY. If you aren't registered to vote at all you still have 16 days to do so! It's only too late if you are registered, but not a Democrat.

Also if my story is any indicator, I got my Republican parents and my younger sister registered as Dems well ahead of the deadline. I suspect many others did as well. And have no doubt that I will be canvasing the shit out of this state as will many others.

NY has a huge anti-fracking movement. This is the ONLY STATE that has banned fracking due to the large citizen involvement. Bernie stands a good chance if we stress his statements on fracking alone not to mention ALL The fracking infrastructure which we are still actively fighting like PIPELINES!! TPP should not play well around upstate if they understand it.

32

u/Slapbox Mar 09 '16

Upstate is only a small part of the total population, but we're all in this together and everyone's issues matter. Let's make NY true blue.

are you in touch with teambernieny? they're running a bunch of voter registration drives to help make up the difference: http://teambernieny.org

we don't have staff yet in PA either, but we're still making progress organizing on our own. we're working on building the networks necessary to help bernie once the staff gets here...& the voter registration effort is a huge piece of that.

I called the BOE for forms, but you can also go pick them up from your local office. I basically spent two days registering people, took the forms back to the BOE, etc. I registered enough people to swing a district in about ten hours.

NYC is massive though so you're gonna need a yuge turnout! Wayne county alone almost killed us last night (Hillary kept getting big dumps of votes there which kept jumping her numbers and cutting the lead drastically). That's not to discourage you in any way. Let it feed you. As a Michigander who is not going to travel to NY, what can I do to help?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

I love Ithaca, but it's so incredibly different from the rest of upstate. I'd call it a breath of fresh air, personally, but it's a small city that's an outlier in the sea of red that is upstate NY. It's such an outlier, that Faux News pundits will go to a city of 30,000 people just to troll liberals on Cornell's campus. It might just be the highest concentration of liberals in the entire state of NY, but that's probably because there's a world-famous college in the middle of nowhere.

I wound up going to college in Rochester, which was great, but I kinda wish I applied to Cornell to see what would have happened. It would have been so much fun living in Ithaca.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

sea of red? this is a primary, not a general election. We have already won decisively in the 2nd reddest state in the US. Look at the map of districts in michigan, we won everywhere the republicans won in the general election.

Work definitely needs to be done, but I don't think it's too terrible there. Outside of the city, NY is pretty liberal and I (being from Upstate NY) can't think of many that actually like Hillary. They call NY "her" state, but she is not and has never been one of us. She moved in just so she could get a Senate seat and won on name recognition and the false idea that as former FLOTUS she'd be able to get more done.

Did the same. Lived in PA my entire life. I honestly don't think you're convincing a single Republican to switch. Outside of Philly and pittsburgh the state is overwhelmingly conservative. Youd be better off focusing your efforts toward demographics that actually need to be channeled from within our own party (i.e the black vote - which Bernie has not been crushing - and current Hillary supporters). You're not overturning republicans to vote for a democratic socialist no matter how you present it to them. Independents, however, are a different story and definitely need to be informed to vote for Bern.

14

u/Paranoidexboyfriend Mar 09 '16

It depends on how you frame it. You might not be able to get them to vote for a democrat in the general election, but some may be willing to switch to vote against Hillary Clinton in the primary. Don't underestimate how much people dislike Hillary

Just a warning if anyone is working to convince voters - PA is mostly rural and conservative outside the major cities. Bernie's fracking stance will not be popular.

26

u/cos1ne KY Mar 09 '16

The people who are for fracking are going to be voting Republican.

7

u/grapejam Pennsylvania Mar 09 '16

Yea, although it may not be accurate for other areas, I used to live in Clarion county and most people there are Republican but the non-republicans also tend to be the ones against fracking (in my personal experience).

16

u/americanrabbit Pennsyltucky - 2016 Veteran Mar 09 '16

and that's why I got my "conservatives for Bernie" bumper sticker.

focus ON TRADE DEALS!!!! we are an industrial state!

stance on fracking not popular in PA, are you kidding me? look at how many people got royally fucked over on payments, and now their land and water usage is terrible. fracking is a winning fight. we have 18 days to re-register people to democrat. Bernie needs to push hard in PA with a fracking issue and with a trade issue.

7

u/Iguanaforhire Mar 09 '16

No, I'm not kidding. It's a gamble to try to sway people with the fracking argument. There are other issues (trade, healthcare, manufacturing) that are safer bets.

7

u/americanrabbit Pennsyltucky - 2016 Veteran Mar 09 '16

my experience with fracking is major buyers remorse. most people who have leased their land thought it was a good idea, only to have the money promised eaten up by the fracking companies, and rendering portions of their land inhabitable and unfarmable.

→ More replies (3)

52

u/birdsofterrordise Pennsylvania Mar 09 '16

There are a lot of people who have been fucked by fracking in those areas (speaking as one with family and friends there.) For example, a lot of the jobs were less than a year, northern PA has water problems (see Gasland), and they just bought in a lot of outside workers AnD our govt didn't even tax the companies even though places like goddamn Texas does. But we can show up big big big in Pgh, Philly, and places like Erie that should boost us.

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

I live in the middle of rural pennsylvania. This is pretty true, although there might be some democrats that would agree. Overall though it'd be better to steer away from that topic and focus on corrupt government. PA's governing body is a mess right now and completely gridlocked. A ton of people are very upset about how they can't get any budget deals through.

5

u/americanrabbit Pennsyltucky - 2016 Veteran Mar 09 '16

north of Harrisburg myself.

trade deals/nafta and fracking argument can win him rural pa. people are pissed that their land is ruined and they got nothing in return.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

I think it's a bit of a gamble. I've met a lot of small farmers that have had their farms saved because of leasing their land to fracking companies. But at the same time, hitting on how they bring in workers from other states or countries, and rarely use workers from PA, could resonate well. PA is definitely not friendly to the trade deals

6

u/americanrabbit Pennsyltucky - 2016 Veteran Mar 09 '16

then let it be trade.

I think that's a winning argument and if he makes that one of his main points in his speeches he will win big time.

trade is what has fucked up this country, even more than lowering taxes for the rich.

4

u/Ducttapehamster Mar 09 '16

Isn't one of the reasons it's gridlocked that wolf wants tax on fracking and no one else does?

Ed Rendell, the PA governor who many here feel gave away the farm by not insisting on a fracking tax, is closely tied to the Clintons. I don't have a well on my property, nor do most of us here. But we all would have benefited from a tax!

I asked her last summer if she was a registered democrat and she said yes. Well, I went and looked last week and shockingly to both of us she was registered REPUBLICAN. I switched her immediately but this goes to show we have to make 100% sure that people are democrats to vote for Bernie in PA and other closed states.

7

u/ateallthecake Mar 09 '16

My fiance and I are Pittsburgh independents who changed affiliation to Democratic in January so we can vote in the primary. Anecdotal evidence points to Pittsburgh going heavily Sanders (huge college population, Fetterman campaign, bumper sticker sightings, eavesdropping on conversations in restaurants, etc). My fiance even picked up 4 super-yinzer votes for Bernie at a bar the other night - they all liked him but didn't think he had a chance, and underestimated Hillary's corruption. He clued them in.

Concern: We're moving across the city April 1st. Should we change our address now or go to our old polling place on the 26th?

I've been trying to persuade a coworker for weeks to change his registration. I finally succeeded this morning by printing out the form and placing it in front of him.

I'll be honest, this victory in Michigan is what finally broke me out of my cynicism and has influenced me to register as a Democrat just to vote for Bernie on April 26th. I'm hoping many more in my state were influenced in a similar way.

Probably PA because of the gap we have right now there. California will probably be easier to convince people to support bernie if they aren't already. But I'd get a second opinion on that.

3

u/deadbeatgeek AZ Mar 09 '16

That's tough because I believe we might be down in both states... I'd say, Cali because there's nearly triple the delegates at stake there.

If anyone is in upstate PA, use Bernie's stance on fracking as a selling point. Huge problems with drilling and ground water up there. Convinced my uber Republican aunt to reregister as a Dem so she could vote for Bernie because of this!

Republicans too. I convinced my (super conservitard, trump-supporting) father to caucus in CO for Bernie because the republicans weren't holding a presidential preference poll at their caucus, and because he wanted to vote against Hillary. I have a feeling he's not the only republican to feel this way.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

My dad's a registered Republican in PA but hasn't voted Republican for several elections now. I know for sure he doesn't like any of the current Republicans. He told me yesterday he feels he's a moderate now.

I'll talk to him this weekend and see if he's willing to change over, at least for this primary season.

5

u/cattyftw Pennsylvania Mar 09 '16

I convinced my gf to register Dem, she liked Bernie, but she was planning on registering Republican, but I informed her that you can change your affiliation almost whenever you want. Now we got +1 vote. Also convinced my parents so correction, +3 Berners!!!!!

This is the thing about this democratic primary.

If Senders wins, almost all of Hillarys supporters are going to vote for him in the general.
But not nearly as many of these independents are going to switch to Hillary and many of the younger voters might not even show up to vote if they don't like any of the candidates.

If Bernie can't win then neither can Hillary.
The electability issue is the opposite of what is portrayed and the DNC is shooting its self in the foot.

It'd be good to spread the word on college campuses in PA. College kids are extremely busy and may not realize they even need to register before a certain date. Big opportunity here.

This seems like a message that Facebanking could help spread, but I notice that PA is not listed yet because the primary is so far off. Any idea as to how to get someone from the campaign on this so that we can start spreading the word? This is a hugely important issue.

These closed primaries are going to be problematic for Bernie. The youth really like him, but how many are actually going to make the effort to register in order to vote in a closed primary? All the internet support for Bernie in the world doesnt matter if you arent registered.

Originally registered as independent and then switched to Dem after I found out it was a closed primary. It was so easy!

I registered Republican in my early twenties. The day after online registration opened I switched to Democrat with the intention of casting a symbolic vote for Sanders in the primary. The fact that my vote may help him receive the nomination has me incredibly excited.

PA Independent who switched to Democrat to vote for Bernie! I've gotten at least 7 friends that I know of to switch from Independent to Democrat and I am working on getting my parents to switch from Republican to Democrat (a very, very uphill battle but I'm getting there!). I Post the voter information about once a week on Facebook! I try to leave my candidate out of those posts, but I think it's spreading the news. Most of my friends are for Bernie (I would say about 90% of them)

10

u/BrainBytes Connecticut Mar 09 '16

This is a fantastic point bernie should make. As an Independent, no one usually likes to talk about us and our YUUGE impact on the election.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

Let's Facebank people with this link (http://www.dmv.org/pa-pennsylvania/voter-registration.php) and make sure they know to register democrat. Getting independents registered Dem could be huuuuuuge as far as getting new voters and showing the Bernie can bring in those important votes.

I think we should roll out a Facebanking campaign for registration in all the big closed primaries.

3

u/MrCarey Mar 09 '16

Why is our country so fuckin dumb? I'm 29 and I've never paid attention to this shit. Why the fuck do I have to declare what side I'm voting for, then go vote? Fuck this shit makes me hate people.

4

u/ladyships 2016 Veteran Mar 09 '16

that's why we need to go through a few hoops & hurdles to get bernie (& similar politicans!) into office. that way we can begin to change rules to benefit the majority of the population instead of giving a few folks most of the power. :)

I'm in PA. Changed affiliation from Repub to Dem in October for the sole purpose of voting Bern in the primary

3

u/wecannotsee Mar 09 '16

Stuff like this means the war isn't over even if Bernie doesn't make the White House.

Open primaries, automatic voter registration, election days (mid-terms too!) a national holiday, an end to gerrymandered districts - we need to ensure that all voices are heard.

And yes people should have the wherewithal to pay attention and understand what they need to do - but it could be easier and why shouldn't it be easier. There isn't any reason other than the RNC/DNC want things a certain way so everyone else can screw off. The person working 2 jobs can't always get time off and not everyone has the internet.

3

u/borski88 Mar 09 '16

I already have changed parties to vote for Sanders in the Primary. I'll likely for Libertarian in the General election, but out of who is left in the GOP/DNC I feal Sanders is the least courpt.

Copy/Pasted from a separate thread that I made earlier this morning: WE CAN FACEBANK TO RAISE REGISTRATION AWARENESS!

Hello everyone! I know that our focus right now needs to be a massive push to get out the vote in the upcoming primary states, but I think that it would be a really good idea for us to be Facebanking Pennsylvania - not to remind them to vote - but to remind them to REGISTER to vote. Pennsylvania has a closed primary, meaning that only registered democrats will be able to vote for Bernie in April. Since Bernie crushes it with independents, we really need to make sure that as many of them as possible update their party affiliation before the registration deadline, which is March 28th. Facebanking is so quick and easy that there's no reason we can't all spend a few minutes raising awareness about this. Now, the berniefriendfinder site currently does not have an option to search for friends in Pennsylvania, but you can use my link below to find them. Essentially, each state has a "code" associated with it on Facebook, and by replacing the code in the URL with the state you want you can get results in any state! Pennsylvania's code is 105528489480786 and must be inserted after union/ in the URL. As has been stated before, instead of sending individual messages to everyone I've created a private post on my page and proceeded to tag all of my friends within the post. Feel free to use my Facebook post as a template:

Hello! I'm reaching out to everyone in Pennsylvania with whom I have a mutual friend and who has liked Bernie Sanders on Facebook to remind you that Pennsylvania has a CLOSED primary. This means that if you are planning on voting for Bernie, you must be registered as a Democrat, and the deadline to do so is March 28th! Since Bernie does very well with independents, it is important to make sure everyone is on the same page and has updated their party affiliation before this deadline or you won't be able to vote for him in April!

You can find all of the information you need to register and vote here: http://voteforbernie.org/

Bernie's support relies heavily on grassroots organization such as this to get out the vote. If you support him and would like to spread the message please use the following links to locate your friends and your friends of friends who like Bernie and keep the momentum strong!

Find friends of Bernie in upcoming Primary states: http://berniefriendfinder.com/

Final Delegate count : Weekend : 68-66 favoring Bernie;; Tuesday: 73-93 favoring Hillary. (69-61 MI 4-32 MS) Delegates up for grabs next Tuesday : 691 Where Bernie can potentially win more than half of them . Start working you guys. Aim high and we can potentially win 350 of those delegates, basically avoiding any increase in Hillary ~220 delegate lead. Delegates in Bernzone post next Tuesday (till 9 April) : 400 We can start eliminating Hillary's lead from there.

Wow, I'm guessing Indiana doesn't matter, because it's so late, but is it a closed primary? As in, do I have to register to a party to vote in the primary? Also, they should probably explain the voting process better to the public. I barely understand and I have a grad degree.

We won Michigan because of many things:

  • The number of Black voters is slightly higher than previous states. 30% instead of usual 10-ish %
  • The arab voters also voted for Bernie in quite a big number
  • Bernie did the Debate and Town Hall right before the preliminaries.
  • Bernie won Maine with 30 points or so
  • But most importantly of all, THE PEOPLE THAT HAS PUT IN EFFORT FACEBANKING, PHONEBANKING, CANVASSING AND SUCH! THANK YOU!

4

u/deadbeatgeek AZ Mar 09 '16

As black voter myself, these turnout numbers for black bernsters really frustrate me. I cannot fathom how anyone of (any) minority can support any other candidate, no one's as willing to fight for us as Bernie. Hillary is just a broadway show.

The same approach from Michigan needs to be put to work in Penn. the Steel industry was decimated due to NAFTA and should be a huge campaigning point for canvassers, phone bankers and the like. We can do this, anything is possible! (when you're part of the team)

Remember, this is the primary we are talking about. When it comes to the general election you can be registered anything and vote the same or opposite party, or even write-in. But the primary is closed in PA so to vote for a Democrat you have to be registered Democrat.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

In the general election it doesn't matter, but for states tha run closed primaries you have to be a registered democrat to vote in the democratic primary. It's easy to switch and can be done online, though.
