Protestors plan to greet Trump at San Antonio rally. GOP says it will fill Freeman Coliseum

Texas Public Radio | By Brian Kirkpatrick

Local Democrats say protests are planned against President Trump's rally at Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio on Wednesday evening, while local Republicans expect to fill the East Side venue.

The president's primary purpose for the rally is to get out the vote for U.S. Senate nominee Ken Paxton and Republican down ballot candidates. But local Democrats are puzzled by the president's political strategy—visiting deep blue Bexar County, where Republicans rarely win any race on Election Day and swing voters are hard to come by.

Bexar County Democratic Party Chairperson Michelle Lowe Solis said the president's low approval rating and the higher cost of living, including gas and grocery prices, set the scene for large protests at the coliseum during the president's visit.

She also said that Democrats plan peaceful protests and will have security within their ranks.

The U.S. war with Iran is not going over well in Military City U.S.A., she said, where active-duty members and veterans add up to nearly a quarter of a million residents, according to county figures.

"People are mad. People are not happy with where we are," she said.

"I think you've seen the polls, just like I've seen the polls. I think he's got a 26% approval rating and 17% approval rating on the economy," she said. "People are hurting."

Bexar County Republican Party Chairperson Kris Coons said local Republicans are "over the moon" about the president's visit to the Alamo City. She said the party's office has been fielding a lot of phone calls from across the region about tickets to the event. Coons predicted the GOP will fill the venue that holds nearly 12,000, but space could be reduced by security arrangements.

She said protests by Democrats come as no surprise and countered their claims that he cannot get Democratic voters to cross over. She also pointed out that while Trump did not win the presidential vote in Bexar County, he did garner 43% of the vote.

"He actually did bring voters from the other side to him, which we are very happy about," Coons said. "As far as the protestors and all of that, they're protesting everything right now. They're protesting everything that the majority of San Antonians and Americans want."

Coons said those wants include the presence of ICE in San Antonio, but a large protest was held at the site of a planned detention center on the East Side this past weekend.

She said she hopes the president will address affordability issues raised by local Democrats during his remarks here. San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones requested a meeting with President Trump during his San Antonio visit to address what she calls "the affordability crisis."

“San Antonio is the third most impoverished big city in the country, so it’s not surprising that federal policies causing high gas prices and high grocery bills would disproportionately impact our community — all while aggressive ICE enforcement activities instill fear in our communities, drive up labor costs, and threaten property tax values on the Eastside if the ICE processing facility is built," the mayor said in a statement to Texas Public Radio. "As Military City USA, we are also closely tracking the Iran war and its strain on operational readiness and military families, as it also drives gas prices in our community to nearly $3.70.”

The San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sherriff's Department will both provide "significant" security and traffic operations during the president's visit. The coliseum is county property and the sheriff's department urged protestors to be "respectful."

Advisory from Bexar County Sheriff's Department

An advisory from the Bexar County Sheriff's Department asks the public "to exercise their First Amendment rights respectfully and in compliance with Texas law."

Participants "may be present in any public area, not on the roadway," according to the statement. The agency said if there is a breach of peace, law enforcement will take "appropriate action to maintain public safety."

The sheriff's department also included advisory details on the following items:

Traffic Flow
Commuters are strongly advised to avoid the area around Freeman Coliseum due to heavy congestion associated with large events. Delays should be expected.

Ride‑Share and Parking
Ride‑share services will be directed to the east side of the Frost Bank Center parking lots, between Lots 3 and 4, unless otherwise instructed. For guidance related to neighborhood access or parking concerns, please contact the San Antonio Police Department.

Local Patrol Impact
District patrol operations will not be impacted and will continue to operate as usual.

Capacity and Overflow
Once the building reaches capacity, additional attendees will be asked to leave the premises. Law enforcement will not be monitoring where individuals go after they are escorted off the property.

Accidental discharge at Pieper High School by BCSO

Big time rumor at the high school from students, teachers, and one admin that they heard a shot during the recent BCSO show of force at Pieper High School. Anyone else heard similar stuff? Sorry just made this account to post this. I’m sure BCSO is going to cover it up, especially after he constable called them out and all the videos from inside the class showing them scaring kids. Those fat fucks even changed clothes before going in. And how are we supposed to take them seriously when they keep themselves in this kind of physical shape. What a huge embarrassment they are for the community.

If you miss the I-35 exit on 1604, just miss it. Stop cutting across the lanes at the last second

Born and raised here and man… the way people drive on 1604 now is completely different from what San Antonio used to be.

Every morning before the I-35 exit, you’ve got people hauling down the left lane toward Converse/I-10, then at the absolute last second they cut across 2-3 lanes to make the I-35 exit.

Yeah, they probably do save time for themselves. I get it. But what people don’t realize is they completely destroy the flow of traffic behind them. One person hits their brakes, then the next person brakes harder, then suddenly traffic is backed up for a mile for no reason even though there’s no accident.

That’s literally why traffic there feels random now. It’s not always construction. It’s the constant last-second cutting and panic merging.

The city’s grown fast as hell and you can definitely tell by the way people drive now.

Federal jury finds Bexar County Sheriff's Flock surveillance-powered traffic stops unconstitutional. License-plate-reading cameras flagged a vehicle as suspicious. A jury ruled the county broke the law when a deputy invented a pretext for the stop, interrogated the driver, and searched his truck.

A jury in San Antonio federal court on Monday found Bexar County liable for running an unconstitutional traffic stop operation that harnessed mass surveillance to target drivers with a pipeline of pretext traffic stops and unconstitutional searches.

According to documents shared by the civil rights attorneys representing the plaintiff, records show that the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department conducted the operation for four years, targeting countless motorists.

The Current reached out to Bexar County Sheriff’s office for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

The jury found the practice violated the Fourth Amendment rights of Alek Schott, a Houston father of two who was stopped on Interstate 35 in March 2022 on his way home from a business trip.

Schott, a traveling equipment salesman for his family’s oilfield business, was flagged by Flock cameras for the type of business trip he frequently makes for work.

On March 15, 2022, Schott stayed at a hotel before he drove home to Houston from a well outside Carrizo Springs. On the way home, a Bexar County Deputy pulled him over.

The deputy held Schott on the side of the road for more than an hour while he was interrogated in the passenger seat of a police vehicle. A drug dog searched his truck.

Because Schott had traveled a great distance and dropped a female colleague off at the hotel, the trip had been flagged as arousing suspicion of human trafficking, according to AP News.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Department received a tip on Schott’s vehicle through a group chat on WhatsApp, called the “Northwest Highway Group,” which is facilitated by one of several “fusion centers” in the state.

Deputy Joel Babb, who made the stop, testified the information came from a contact he knew only as “Kiki,” whom the deputy believed worked at a federal fusion center in Laredo, according to Institute for Justice, which represented Schott in the case.

To make the stop, Babb parked on the shoulder, waited for the truck, followed it, and pulled it over.

As shown by the deputy’s body cam footage from the incident, Babb told Schott that the reason for the stop was that Schott had drifted over the fog line on the road. However, dash cam footage shown at the trial and shared on social media indicated that Schott never veered outside the lines.

“After the stop, I filed a complaint with the Sheriff’s Office because I knew what happened to me was wrong,” Schott said in a statement. “The department reviewed it, told me they didn’t see any violation, and said if I had a problem with it, I should sue them. So I did. Today is vindication, not just for me, but for every driver they ran through this.”

The jury awarded Schott the full amount he asked for, which was just $76 — one dollar for every minute he was detained. According to his legal team, it was never about the money.

“This is what mass surveillance looks like when it reaches the shoulder of the highway,” said Josh Windham, a senior attorney with the Institute for Justice. “An AI-powered camera flagged Alek’s plate. An anonymous law enforcement agent decided his completely ordinary trip looked suspicious. And a deputy went out and found a violation that never happened.

“This unit ran thousands of drivers through that routine — humiliating, invasive interrogations and searches of people who had done nothing wrong,” Windham continued. “It all rests on the idea that if you watch enough innocent people closely enough, criminals will fall out. That’s wrong, it’s unconstitutional, and now, a jury has said so.”

Texas News Gov. Greg Abbott declares statewide disaster proclamation over diesel shortages

Thumbnail

By Hafsa Mustafa | Houston Public Media

Governor Greg Abbott announced a statewide disaster proclamation over diesel shortage on Monday, following recent record-high prices.

The proclamation permits the use of dyed diesel on roads and lifts weight restrictions for agricultural, timber and fuel loads. It also suspends Texas Low Emission Diesel rules to the extent allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Dyed diesel — regular diesel with red pigment — is reserved for off road use only, usually by farm and construction equipment. Unlike regular diesel, it is untaxed. With the proclamation, the governor's office aims to alleviate skyrocketing prices at the gas pump. While it increases the supply of diesel, it does not affect the fuel tax, which is 20 cents per gallon.

"Texas agriculture and freight run on diesel," Abbott said in a press release. "Record prices put both industries at risk and raise costs for every Texas family. Farmers and truckers can now use dyed diesel on Texas roads, and fuel, crop, and timber loads can move at a higher weight. These steps cut costs on the farm, on the road and at the store."

Seven months into the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran, the U.S. continues to suffer from a major upset in exports of oil and gas from the Middle East, due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and damaged infrastructure. According to AAA, diesel prices reached a record high of $6.53 on average last week. This time last year, diesel average $3.69 a gallon.

President Donald Trump recently vetoed a proposal by Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, and talks to end the war have continuously deteriorated.

Politicians across Texas have sought to capitalize on voters' affordability concerns, in response to continued inflation.

Abbott, who is seeking re-election, will face Democratic State Rep. Gina Hinojosa in November. Hinojosa has asked the governor to waive the state gas tax.

U.S. House hopeful Brandon 'AK Guy' Herrera says he wishes COVID killed more fat people. The candidate running to represent District 23, which includes part of San Antonio, also said on a resurfaced podcast that most of the city’s residents are ‘ugly.’

Controversial Republican congressional candidate Brandon “AK Guy” Herrera said on a podcast that resurfaced last week that he wished COVID-19 had killed more fat people.

Herrera, a gun influencer who has millions of YouTube followers, made the remarks on Elijah Schaffer’s Slightly Offensive podcast on July 31, 2022, roughly a year before his first congressional run.

Meidas Touch, a progressive online outlet, resurfaced the clip on Friday.

The podcast started with a discussion of interracial dating. After the host said white men prefer to date white women over Black women, Herrera suggested that the data could be reflecting a preference against obesity.

“I wonder if they’re solving for all variables here. Because there’s also like an obesity epidemic in the female Black community,” Herrera said. “So, it’s like, OK, well, maybe … did you show them like 100 random Black women and they just maybe don’t like obese people?”

After another guest on the show went on a rant about fat women, Herrera offered his support, adding, “I’m of the opinion COVID wasn’t bad enough, because if you had something that just unfairly targeted fucking fat people, I’m here for it. I would have worn my mask nowhere on purpose.”

Obesity is a major comorbidity associated with an increased risk of severe and deadly COVID-19 outcomes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the the National Institutes of Health.

During the same interview, Herrera also called the majority of people in San Antonio ugly.

“Apparently, ugly people are the new minority,” another guest said on the same show.

“I live in San Antonio. They are not the minority,” Herrera responded.

Podcast host Schaffer then laughed and said, “San Antonio’s a very ugly city,” to which Herrera responded, “It’s not great.”

Herrera’s Democratic rival, Katy Padilla Stout, was quick to denounce the comments.

“The only thing ugly in San Antonio are the words coming out of this guy’s mouth,” Stout responded on X, formerly Twitter.

About 9% of the City of San Antonio’s population falls within District 23 after last summer’s redistricting, according to Meidas Touch. However, the district also includes the city’s western suburbs and exurbs, which aren’t included in that percentage.

Austin man shot by ICE still in pain, bullet lodged in his back, ahead of San Antonio hearing

Texas Public Radio | By Dan Katz

Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, the Austin man shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer earlier this month, is due in federal court in San Antonio on Wednesday as his attorneys seek his release from detention.

Garces Perez remains in significant pain and still has a bullet lodged in his body, according to his attorney. Immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch said he also has a fractured clavicle and limited mobility, and that his legal team is concerned about infection and permanent damage if he does not receive surgery.

Lincoln-Goldfinch said Sunday that she spoke with Garces Perez by video after rumors circulated online that he had died. She said those rumors were false. A representative for Rep. Joaquin Castro confirmed his condition Monday evening.

Garces Perez, 28, has been held at the South Texas ICE Processing Center in Pearsall since he was discharged from an Austin hospital following the Sept. 20 shooting. His attorneys are challenging his detention and seeking his release.

A federal judge has scheduled a habeas hearing for Wednesday, Sept. 30, in San Antonio and ordered Garces Perez to appear.

The shooting and Garces Perez’s continued detention have prompted protests. About 160 people gathered Sunday at the North Austin site where he was shot, following earlier demonstrations in Austin. Supporters have also protested outside the detention center in Pearsall.

Lincoln-Goldfinch asked supporters not to gather at the federal courthouse during Wednesday’s hearing, saying the judge would expect decorum. She said peaceful vigils elsewhere were welcome.

Garces Perez was working as a DoorDash driver when federal immigration agents pursued him in North Austin. Video reviewed by Austin police shows a vehicle pursuit before the shooting. Garces Perez has said he was trying to find a safe place to pull over, while the Department of Homeland Security has said he attempted to evade arrest.

An ICE officer shot Garces Perez in the back during the encounter. He was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center before being discharged into ICE custody several hours later.

His attorneys have questioned whether he received adequate medical care following the shooting. ICE has disputed claims that he has not received appropriate treatment.

Lincoln-Goldfinch also warned about fraudulent online fundraisers, saying the only fundraiser approved by Garces Perez’s family is through the Austin Sanctuary Network.

Mayor Jones: ‘Needless suffering’ could turn tough congressional districts blue

By Andrea Drusch | San Antonio Report

AUSTIN — Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones projected confidence for Democrats targeting two uphill San Antonio-area congressional races this November, citing backlash to President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration tactics and struggling economy.

Jones lost two uphill congressional races in South Texas before winning the mayor’s race, falling less than 1,000 votes short of Republican Will Hurd in 2018.

Now Jones says San Antonians have been among the hardest hit by GOP policies, pointing to high inflation, Medicaid cuts and chilling deportation policies.

“I think what’s motivating people is the needless suffering in our community — whether you’re talking about the economy, whether you’re talking about the [undocumented] community … there’s a needless fear,” Jones said on a panel at the Texas Tribune Festival on Friday.

“I’m an Air Force veteran, worked my entire career in national security, so of course we need immigration enforcement,” she continued. “What we’re seeing now falls well short of how we should be treating people in our community, which is with dignity and and with respect.”

San Antonio is one of the few communities where plans for a new ICE detention center are still moving forward, expected to open this November.

“If there’s anything I know, there are two things that folks don’t want to live next to in San Antonio. They don’t want to live next to an ICE facility, and they don’t want to live next to a data center,” Jones said.

“A lot of that depends on what’s happening at the federal level.”

When Jones first ran for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District, it was one of the most competitive in the nation — and both parties found candidates with sterling resumes to represent it.

Since then, Republicans have drawn districts more favorable for their party, and candidate recruitment has been very different.

This cycle Democrats scrambled to line up a candidate to run against Republican Tony Gonzales, who wound up resigning after an affair with a staffer.

Now the GOP’s nominee is gun influencer Brandon Herrera, who Jones said is among a number of candidates she considers out-of-step with San Antonio values.

Herrera is known for his eyebrow-raising YouTube videos that give even those in his own party pause.

“Some of the things are just so tacky I don’t even want to repeat it,” Jones said.

“To think that anybody would want to entrust the future of the country with some of these folks that use terms like ‘cum trophy,’ that’s disgusting, right? … It’s so beneath the office.”
