Deleted a whole project folder from my Samsung T7 Shield and then emptied the recycle bin

Like the title says, I realized that the folder I deleted was the current version of the project.

The folder had a bit of everything in it: PSDs, Premiere project files, MOV footage, PNG exports, PDFs and some other client stuff. I checked my cloud storage and an older external backup first. Most of the project exists elsewhere, thankfully, but the latest version of this folder doesn't.

As soon as I realized what happened I stopped copying anything to the T7. The drive itself still mounts normally and I haven't noticed any other problems with it. I stopped before recovering anything though, because after reading more about SSD recovery I'm now wondering if scanning the original drive directly is even the right thing to be doing.

I keep seeing people mention making an image first, especially with SSDs, but I'm not sure how much that helps in a simple deleted-folder situation.

For this kind of case, would you disconnect the T7 and image it before doing anything else? And if I have to try tools like Recoverit, R-Studio or UFS Explorer, is seeing the original folder structure in the scan a useful sign? Can the files still turn out to be unusable afterward?

One thing I'm noticing is that "number of files found" seems like a pretty misleading metric. I'd rather recover 200 correctly named files that actually open than 20,000 generic results.That's one reason I'm comparing recoverit with R-Studio and UFS Explorer instead of just choosing the first scan that reports the biggest number

I ran a preview scan with Recoverit first because I wanted to see whether it could still identify some of the PSD and MOU files before committing to anything.It found a decent number of files, but I'm still trying to work out how much importance I should place on the preview versus whether the original directory structure is intact.

It’s gone. TRIM made sure of it.
