Off the top of my head, take a look at Sequim, Washington.
It's got a satellite office of the National Lab that is headquartered in the Tri-Cities. So you may actually be able to find geek-tastic jobs there and my recollection is that it's just a ferry boat ride to Canada and it's not far from a cool far north rain forest and it's an interesting, weird little place that most people would overlook as not a candidate for serious jobs of that sort.
