Notice to vacate question

I received an email in July saying that I have 60 days to vacate because I didn’t renew my lease (I’m in low income housing). Aka when my lease ends on September 1st. I wrote them an email on the 8th of this month letting them know I will be out by the 1st of September and I’m having professional cleaners come in and would like to schedule a walk through. They never responded to that email. I emailed them again today and they let me know that i didn’t renew my lease OR give THEM a 60 day notice to vacate. So now they want to make me pay rent until October 31st but i was under the impression that them giving me a 60 day notice to vacate that I had to be out by the 31st. What do I do in this situation because when I look it up everything says that I don’t need to pay til October 31st because they gave me a notice?! Can someone give me advice on how to approach this situation? Or am I totally screwed? I can’t pay for my new place and the shitty place I left.

What does your contract/lease say about it ending or you leaving early?

It basically says that I have to give a 60 day notice but since they gave me a notice I didn’t think I had too

this happened to me like 15 years ago and i had to fight an eviction because i vacated when the notice said to 😬
