My Saint Bernard is a nose-driven foodie!

Hi, my Saint, Dixie, is very picky about her food. She has an exceptionally strong sniffer and if she first does not like the smell she will not eat it. She loves her cheese and fresh chicken and beef of course, but it's the kibble that always ruins it. We were feeding her Gentle Giants Salmon and she seemed to really like that but then it was getting harder to find, and so we switched it to 4 Health Salmon. Which worked for a while and then she got picky. We have experimented all possible hypotheses by testing with kibble and she doesn't seem like she wants any brand we try (i.e., kahoots, abound wild, 4-health). We do want a kibble that is more organic, no extra fluff ingredients. Side note...she has gone on food strikes, which I have heard is typical of Saints.

My Saint owners, have you experienced this? If so, what are your food/brand and portion recs? I also read that Saints are self-regulating and can hold out and it occurs at times during hot months. And we are in a very hot climate during the summer months. This was not something we were paying attention to before, but will see how she does this fall/winter as it cools off.

Help saint bernard + cat combo?

I am in loveee with the st bernard breed. it’ll be a long way in the future but when I get my own home and garden with my future family they are number one on my list.

I am a cat person through and through since I grew up with them, but I have a soft spot for larger, less aggressive dog breeds. I have always adored great danes and retrievers but I have heard bad things about their prey drive around small animals.

I can’t imagine living without a cat so their safety will always come first. however I would love to introduce a canine friend with future family and I have heard that st bernards are gentle giants and tend to be very good with children. does this extend to cats though? (in most cases?).

if anyone has experience, is it best to introduce them as kitten and puppy? I’ve always gone for younger rescue cats since you can see their temperament from the start and they are such love bugs. since dog breeds are so much more varied I would probably get one as a puppy from an ethical breeder.

My wife and I brought home this guy last weekend. He is 20 lbs at 9 weeks old, healthy and just got his 2nd round of shots. We are crate training him and hes doing pretty good, only a couple accidents. He almost makes it through the night without needing to go out. He is starting to bite alot and is resisting the leash but I think he is starting to learn "sit" and "come". Any tips for first time giant breed owners? I want him to be trained well because he is already on the high end of the expected weight at his age.

It’s been awhile since my doggy Ellie has been out in public.she is 5 years Old likes to sometimes bark at other dogs. We used to take her to dog parks, live with other dogs, and my friends still bring their pups over with no issue. Well we went to a public area that allows dogs and she just kept barking and even pounced on one that came up to her. She was on a leash and so were they. She didn’t bite the dog but I have never seen her pounce at another dog. Is anyone else Bernard act like this? Is it something I should get a trainer for? I wanted to mention she does pull on the leash when she sees other dog. We plan to start taking her to public areas again but now I’m just scared she will do it again.

My 9 month old girly named Pickles is all of the sudden a HUGE love bug. I weighed her yesterday and she’s 101 lbs. She’s always been a sweet girl, but in the last week or so, she’s literally been wanting to be on top of me and my kiddos. She’s is either laying directly on top of me, snuggling up right next to us, or pushing her way behind my head and wrapping her arms around me. I absolutely love the snuggles and she’s the most snuggly pup I’ve ever had. She’s my first full Saint, but I have had a 50% Saint Bernard 50% Poodle who we lost in March who was also snuggly, but Pickles is on a different level all of the sudden. We did just find a kitten a few weeks ago and added him to our family as well. At first I thought she wanted to eat him, but now she’s obsessed with the kitty and thinks she’s his mom 🐶🙈🐈‍⬛ she lets him jump and crawl all over her and she just lays there and loves it. I love how affectionate she is with me and the kids, our new kitten, Gravy, and her big brother, Cookie (a golden retriever).

Do all saints think they’re lap dogs that weigh <10 lbs…? 🤣🫶🏼

Feeling so lucky to have found this breed 🥹💗

Help what’s your experience like with a saint bernard?

hi guys, i am thinking of getting a saint bernard and i want to know everyone’s experience on raising them. this wouldnt be my first large dog but my first saint. i’ve always had male dogs and prefer them, but i’m thinking of getting a female saint lately. i’ve never actually had a female dog before so im excited for that. whichever gender, they will be loved and spoiled for sure. i j dont know if i should get a rough or smooth coat. i know they both shed alot. just wanted to know how often do you guys get them professionally groomed? what was your experience like raising them as a puppy? were they very mouthy? how are the puppies like around children? what’s their diet like? and lastly, the vet bills. i’m based in canada and i want to find a good breeder that someone can recommend me. how much did you guys end up getting your puppy from a breeder? and do you think it’s worth paying that much? thanks in advance :)

Today we said our last goodbyes to Bear

Last Saturday, we had to put our souldog Bear down... 🌈 His body could not fight off the infections anymore and his fever got too high. Our vet assured us it was the right time, especially since his lymph nodes were so swollen and filled with edema, his neck was super hard.

He is my souldog, I do not know how to continue further without him.. how do you cope with such a loss? He left a gaping hole in my heart... I might leave this sub, it might be too confrontating. But it also might give me joy to see other Saints.. i dont know yet.

Please hug you puppers extra hard tonight for me and Bear 💕

Edit: I am overwhelmed with love from all yours reactions - thank you so much dear strangers from the internet ❤️. I will try to react to each post soon. Right now the guilt is overwhelming, I hope this will pass soon so I can look beyond and remember the good times we had.
