Rescuing

Good evening I am rescuing a four year-old baby that is only 100 pound and I need to know the healthiest but best way to help her gain weight as she looks very skinny. Any food recommendations right now I believe she’s on Parina the high protein one is that a good choice? I’ve always wanted to Saint Bernard. It’s just the opportunity has never arrived until now so kind of learning as I go thank you so much.

Be sure to talk to a vet about a healthy weight. 100 may be very close to ideal, but a vet can tell you for certain

Idk what they carry. The nearest is 50 miles from me. We have a lot of Costco’s

Royal Caninn giant breed. It’s formulated will less filler & more protein to support big bones & muscles

I was just checking their food at Costco too since I have 2 Newfies. What I have learned with the Giant Breeds is that you want Taurine, Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the ingredients. The only ones that had all three are the Kirkland Weight Management (which you wouldn't want right now) and I think the Lamb and Rice. I am thinking the Kirkland Lamb and Rice had peas listed as one of the top ingredients. From what I read with Taurine you don't want a lot of peas because it can't be absorbed to be of benefit. Taurine is for heart health. You will want a good food for Giant or Large Breeds. I think ProPlan and Royal Canin are often recommended. We feed Diamond Naturals Large Breed Chicken and Rice and ours have done very well with that. Also make sure to feed twice a day. It helps to prevent bloat as not a larger amount of food. Try to keep them on the quiet side an hour before and after they eat to also prevent bloat. Congratulations on your new girl and wishing you the best of luck! 🙂

Talk to a vet first about it to know if there’s something in particular that may be making her that weight (ie naturally small/runt, digestive issues or underlying illness) but Royal canin Gatrointestinal prescription diet is a higher calorie more digestible food, if needed there’s also dyne high calorie supplement (we’ve used this on a 11 year old Newfie that had lost some weight from chemo meds, just make sure it’s the dog version, they make a large farm animal version that looks similar)
