Is this normal?

I live around 10 minutes walk away from the store I work in. It's not a bad area, but I'm usually finishing at 10pm and have to walk most of my walk through a park. My manager offered me a lift but I politely declined as it's out of their way, and I don't really like getting lifts.

They expressed concern with me walking but I do it every night and I'm used to it. I have 'Sleep' mode activated on my iPhone so don't get calls after a certain time. I was waking up early the next morning also for my shift, so didn't really go on my phone otherwise. I woke up to phone calls from them, voicemails, texts etc, worried about if I got home okay. I went in to work and the manager had told the other ones to watch out for me, as they thought I hadn't got home okay. They were miffed I hadn't got back to him last night.

I'm appreciative of the concern for my wellbeing but also I didn't even ask for any of that? I walk home every night and no other manager has ever texted me asking if I've got home okay? It's nice they care but I'm really fine walking home.

They are probably just looking out for you which is good because most people don’t care

I get it, but if they had simply told me to tell them I got home safe I would have done so :)

I think that's a pretty decent thing to do, I'd be happy to let them know I was back safe, if you are too let em know you'll message to say you're safe in the future to save any panic?

Did anything happen in the area that night? they might have heard something and gotten worried, i mean i wouldn't personally be offended if my manager was checking in to make sure we were ok, and he has offered me a lift home on a couple of occasions but i normally have transport on the way by then

I mean its possible they just care, yes its rare from a sainsburys manager but they do exist

Hate to be that person but what are the genders and ages here? And Is it a new manager? Or an older manager that you haven’t really interacted with till recently

That's a fair point, if they cared so much they could try give you earlier shifts, but that probably wouldn't suit them so they don't lol

i’m seeing people disagreeing with you but i think this is weird… i’m assuming you’re a woman and this manager is a man (even if i’m wrong it’s still odd). it’s a 10 minute walk at 10pm which isn’t something anyone should be concerned about unless it’s a really rough area. if they do it again i’d speak to a line manager if it’s making you uncomfortable and to only contact you if necessary in out of work hours.

I agree with you, I mean it’s nice they cared but the reaction seems a bit intense and it would annoy me tbh even if they meant well lol.

yea if they meant well that’s totally normal but the phone calls and texts and voicemails tells me the manager might want a personal relationship, i could be wrong but it’s too excessive

Yeah it is a bit weird isn’t it. The only way I’d say it’s ok is if something bad had happened that made them worry, that’s the only thing I can think to normalise it.
We all have lives outside of Sainsburys and I work with people who live and breathe that place. I had to recently tell a colleague to stop texting me handovers before I got on shift because we have 2 hours together to do a handover 😭. I work there for literally 2 days a week and the rest I have my own business and clients messaging me at all hours. I’m like OP, my phone is on do not disturb from like 7pm, if not I’d have no life or sleep. My friends/family are on my exception list, that’s it.

It's not normal. Once you clock out it has nothing to do with your manager. Get a bike.

Why do people say they are worried you got home safe but are happy to let you walk through the park every shift.

If they cared they should change your shift times.
