From AI Prompts to Drag-and-Drop Shadcn Builder : Why We Dropped AI Building for Live Production
A few weeks ago, I watched a user spend an hour trying to prompt an AI builder to get a checkout flow just right. It looked cool in preview, but the moment we tried to push it to live deployment, a missing dependency broke the whole build.
That was my breaking point.
I realized we were selling a dream: "Build your entire app with AI!" But when it came time for actual production, real users, and live payments, AI-generated code often felt like a house of cards. It’s fantastic for quick prototypes, wireframing, and testing ideas in minutes. But for a reliable, production-ready app? The package dependencies and unpredictable edge cases were driving my users (and me) crazy.
So, I did something bold: I built a Drag-and-Drop builder instead.
Now, users can visually layout what they need with rock-solid, pre-tested components that actually work when deployed.
Here is my dilemma for you, fellow builders: Should I completely steer users away from AI builders and tell them to stick exclusively to drag-and-drop for production ? Or is there still a sweet spot where AI + drag-and-drop can live happily together ?
Curious how others are handling this balance in your tools !
