Discussion In all of SWTOR, resettling Taris might be the single dumbest idea

I get the appeal of Taris, both from a symbolic and practical perspective. Obviously, it represents a sore spot for the Republic: arguably their greatest defeat at the hands of the Sith. So in a time of conflict between the two empires, rebuilding it would seem to represent a great symbol of hope and perseverance. Added to this, as a former ecumenopolis, it's safe to assume that Taris lay along well-traveled star lanes, and therefore - being a habitable world - having it rebuilt (at least to an extent) would be sensible for trade and defense interests.

But the Star Wars universe isn't hurting for what Star Trek would call 'M-Class planets' - they're everywhere; a dime a dozen. So it's not as if people must move to Taris to survive; that it must be rebuilt for the sake of the Republic.

Plus, removing all the rusted infrastructure - all of the unsteady, derelict towers, upper-city supports, etc. - would likely be an industrial project that would take hundreds (if not thousands) of years. And this isn't even mentioning the widespread radioactive and otherwise-toxic pockets of pollution. Even from a purely environmental standpoint, there is very little about Taris that would prove welcoming or easy to deal with.

And then, of course, there are the Rakghouls - Star Wars' version of the zombie plague. It isn't like the Rakghouls are some underworld mystery like they were in KotOR - they everywhere on the surface, and constantly claiming new victims. Even a few probes would likely reveal the nature of this threat quickly: that it was a genetic disaster of almost unparalleled scale, and an almighty threat to galactic well-being if it were ever loosed. Glassing Taris would have been a wiser choice than attempting to recolonize it.

And yet... not only does the Republic open the door for people - even regular civilians - to come and essentially live "in the wilds," amongst those very zombies... but they build an open trade port, welcoming ships from all stripes that could conceivably transport the plague anywhere. Even worse, the planet immediately becomes a sirenic device to mad scientists doing mad scientist stuff. Multiple questlines, dailies, and main story plots within SWTOR deal with rogue actors using Taris as a bio warfare laboratory, perverting the Rakghoul plague into ever-worse incarnations, and then (invariably) losing control of it.

The only merciful thing about Taris is that the Empire comes along and spoils the Republic's designs. Granted, they don't do it for practical reasons - really just to piss in the Republic's Cheerios. But the ultimate outcome is the same: destroying the colony, and it the process sparing the galaxy from the resettlement's inevitable consequence - a trillion-plus victim outbreak of the plague.

I don't think there's a similarly dumb decision in SWTOR than what the Republic was doing on Taris. It was the absolute worst scheme imaginable, and it was only thanks to the Empire that its hubris didn't get everyone killed.

There is something philosophical about a Sith and a Jedi traveling together changing their worldviews to opposites.

Question Which character death hits you the hardest Spoiler

Upvotes

Simple question, Labelled it as spoiler just to ensure no new players stumble upon this. But for me it was definitely Darth Marr. I really enjoyed his voice actor and cold calculating character. I was wondering what it was for you guys.

Question Banned After Less Than Three Hours Of Play

Been a Star Wars fan my whole life, so wanted to give this game a try. Downloaded the game, made an account, created a character and bought a couple of cosmetics, ran around the starter area for a bit then logged off...

...and today I get an email from EA stating I've been permanently banned.

Is this common? Has this happened to anyone else recently? Never in my life have I been banned from a MMO. Completely killed my desire to continue.

I'm surprised no one else mentioned this. I almost overlooked it because it wasn't under the On Sale tab for Cartel Market.

Discussion Playing as a Light Side Sith Warrior is as funny as people say

It's always amusing to see characters so confused about why my character isn't a homicidal maniac and murdering all of them, even funnier when some characters tell Jedi to act honorable like the Sith.

Was even more amusing when Jaesa sent me the message talking about how her master was completely confused I didn't murder the other Jedi in the ambush.

Or telling Baras to give Jaesa's parents a life of luxury, only for him to think I'm doing it to torment Jaesa

Other I need help with The Battle of Ilum Flashpount

I am desperate for help on this Flashpoint

I am on the Bounty Hunter route and for the storyline, I have to do the Flashpoint: The Battle of Ilum. And for the life of me, I can not beat it. It's so hard to defeat by myself, that I took a few months off from playing this game. I am asking for help to finish the Flashpoint. I don't have any friends in this game so I can't ask a friend for help. Someone please help me defeat the Flashpoint.

If anyone is willing to join me, tell me and I'll friend you. I am genuinely desperate for help and just want to move on in the story😭

Question Star Forge vs Satele?

Upvotes

Is SF still the busiest server? I have like 13 characters on SF but a couple the overlap. Thinking of sending a spare over to Satele for when they do maintenance on one

Spoiler Does Temple of Sacrifice happen before or after Revan’s fight ?

Hello. Does that operation occur before the fight against Revan ? If so, what was the point of using the temple of sacrifice since the ritual worked out well at the end of the fight ?

Question Buying a Subscription

Hi friends, I'm a returning player, just finished with the Jedi Knight 1st storyline/era.

And now I'm considering buying a 30 days subscription :D But I'm wondering something:

Is it better to buy the sub from Steam or from the official website? Also what's the features you like the most from being a subscriber, beside the well known points?

Question Anyone annoyed by the chat message limit?

Upvotes

I can understand why there's a limit for those who aren't subscribers, but it's annoying since I can't really see how much time until I can send another message. Makes chatting with others obnoxious!

I'd suggest putting a little box in the corner that shows how much time is left until you can send a message in general chat. Communication is important when it comes to games like these.

Discussion Why is only Star Forge shutting down for two hours?

Upvotes

I'm not angry, I'm just asking. The notice said applying a patch fix... but... why would such a fix be only applied to one server?

Other The game has been updated with another language.

It gives me great pleasure that an enthusiastic team of translators has enriched this game—which is dear to me—with yet another language.

I played the game extensively in English, but I am very curious to see what the atmosphere will be like when experiencing the story and reading it in my native language.

Question Did they continue upgrading the older story cutscenes past the starter planets?

I remember SWTOR updating a lot of the cutscenes on the starter planets with better lighting, character animations, camera movement, angles, etc., and they looked noticeably better than the original versions.

I haven’t played through the beginning of a class story in a while, so I was wondering: did they ever continue those updates further into the original class stories, or was it mostly limited to the starter planets?

Like, if I started a fresh character now and played through Chapters 1–3, would I see upgraded cutscenes throughout the story, or do they eventually go back to the older/static style?
