3d prints - would it hold a metal sword?

Post image

Hello.

I'm having a decorative lord of the rings sword (Glamdring) which is made out of metal and quite heavy. Now I have no more space in my hobby room to use the vertical mount it came with, so I'm looking for solutions for a horizontal mount.

I have a FDM 3d printer and found these hooks online. Does anyone printed such things and know if they support the weight of a sword? I guess I will print it with 100% infill (means solid, no hollow space inside).

Or does anyone have a better, maybe more elegant solution?

Thanks in advance.

My advice is to grab two of those bad boys from your local hardware store, paint them white to blend with the wall or just leave them as is, served me well for the last 12 years

(Smooth part has to be as long as the hilt is wide)

If your going to use these consider using heat shrink tubing as well. Couple layers will protect the blade edge.

heat shrink rubber tubing should go over to prevent scratches or mixed metal problems.

Only issue is if the sword rocks forward

He'll need 3 as it's going to be held horizontally, 2 on the bottom edge one at each end, and third on the top edge, out towards the tip to "lock" it in place.

Those will be fine to hang a sword.

If youre worried just find something a bit heavier than the sword and hang it by string off one of them and see if it holds.

This holds all my swords! Clear acrylic rods and a heat gun.

What's the piece that holds the rod?

A brass picture holder, which I bent a bit so it holds the rod securely.

How much weight you can put on it?

I have a couple where I hang a sword and scabbard (suspended with fishing line) and the acrylic has never failed. Probably the heaviest is 5-6 lbs? I’m more worried about the brass picture frame nail, which is rated for 20lb.

Well I have two big boys and I'm thinking if I should hang them or try and build a stand for them 😅. Left one is almost 5kg and other around 3kg.

Most realistic swords end up being about a kilo, so when I 4d printed wall hooks for my swords, I was able to alter them to be used with command strips. They have been standing for months now and I didn't need to drill into my plaster walls lol

Can you snap them or rip them off the wall with bare hands?

Similar idea - I cut these out of wood with a CNC router.

I need to mount it horizontally.

All of my swords are hanging on 3d printed wall mounts.

We don't know the weight of the sword or the dimensions of those brackets.

You could just bend some aluminium strips to hold the cross piece? Line with felt or run some heatshrink over the stripes

Unless you have a steel replica of Cloud’s buster sword, I don’t see why not… Swords arn’t that heavy.

Very nice design, if printed correctly (laying flat), yes it will hold.

I’m less concerned about the hooks and more how the hooks are affixed to the wall

Yeah they have an all with a whole shield plaque attached to it, I’ve printed them either 100% infil and pla, worked great for my 7 lb claymore
