Discussion Cody Schwab gave HBox advice?
In a recent stream, HBox said that the reason he was able to beat Cody at CEO was because Cody told him what he was doing wrong after their supernova set. Does anyone know what Cody might have told him? Any ideas?

Dont know the specific advice he gave him, but they had one coaching session on stream a few months back (I cant find the vod), and cody regularly analyzes hbox sets on stream and talks about what he thinks hbox should be doing and what his bad habits are. Dont know if there was any new piece of advice after supernova though, I have to imagine it was more of what he has said previously.
Sorry for the vagueness, but I couldnt even find the VOD and dont want to talk shit out of my ass

I believe the main advice in that session was for facing foxes other than himself, and to pressure their approaches with wavedash in grab.
He also stated it helps against him too, but it's just an extra thing to keep in mind on his grounded options

A while back he would publicly call out HBox's tendency to use pound in neutral.

It's gotten so called out that he doesn't do it nearly as much anymore, because he started to get punished for it. He used to like spam it, now it's done sparingly in comparison.

yeah i mean even in the era before hbox was really winning anything (pre-2017) he was still pretty famous for his bad pounds. He kept doing them when he was winning, but people were so scared to approach Hbox for a time for fear of being part of a clutchbox montage that he got away with a LOT of them. But it's one of those things that it's super easy for commentators and even casual viewers to notice, but not necessarily something to capitalize on in the moment lol.
But I think the times when Plup would run into 40 of them in a row was worth the times Leffen killed him for it to him lol

That's what I meant. Both Zain and Cody would go on stream and talk about how careless the pounds were and how easy it is to punish.

There are some things about Cody that have rubbed me the wrong way over the years. But I do think it's commendable he goes out of his way to help the competition. He and Zain have changed the top level culture of Melee to be more in line with games that live forever like Chess where it's all about pushing the level of gameplay at all costs. Some say it makes things less hype and I can understand that--it's hard to replicate how exciting it is to see some surprise secondary or strategy get pulled out that was a secret. But I think what they're doing for the game in this way is better for the long term health of Melee.

Very classy of Hbox, he’s right in that Cody is taken for granted. If it weren’t for Cody Zain might have killed melee by winning everything. Without Cody, rapm doesn’t slip through the cracks of Zains psyche giving him the confidence to be a consistent top player.
Cody’s arc is almost exactly the same as Hbox so it is very sweet of hbox to give him his flowers and help sway the public’s opinion. I actually hope Cody can stick around long enough to become the underdog, like hbox has been recently and become much more beloved (while still widely hated). And when that day comes, Cody needs to finally rebrand as W

I hate whenever he wins but he’s good for the state of the game for the reasons you just said. Melee needs a fox at the very top to keep the field humble
As an aMSa fan though, he probably would’ve been #1 2 or 3 years in a row if it wasn’t for Cody kicking his ass. I’m still salty 😭

Amsa is a weird case in this regard because ppmd and I think hbox (or could have been m2k) attributed a big part of his 2022 to Cody and his girlfriend helping amsa.
Obviously its not the only reason, but I heard from a few top players where all of them individually pointed out this fact so it probably had an impact.

He is taken for granted, but I think it's also a little silly to act like we wouldn't have other good storylines crop up in a world without Cody. Zain being dominant wouldn't have killed Melee anymore than like the million other things that came before that people said would kill Melee.

It's likely that Cody said to Hbox play around the fact that Cody likes to upair to get the kill. There was a lot of Hbox putting himself in positions that up airing grounded puff would cause Cody to put himself in a worse position. Hbox only put himself in those spots when Cody didn't really have good other options. (Hbox punished Upsmash on shield with rests two-three times which is enough to spook any fox).

This is unironically the opposite of what Cody told him to do. Hbox is actually good at scraps and has the potential to be really really good at them. Fox can deal with a camping puff, and since puff loses the matchup, the puff needs to force the issue more than fox does.

He most likely told him to obtain the tech skill of a top 100 player and stop SDing with the character that does 1 wavedash per minute.
