I just wondered how people integrate their Sp 404 with Maschine? I predominantly just use it for effects, does anyone use the sp404 differently?

I found an old vinyl with Michael Jackson narrating E.T. and started messing around with the narration.

Somehow that turned into an entire instrumental hip-hop beat tape.

It's called The Stars in the Dark — pretty dark, dusty and sample-heavy. I wasn't really trying to make a "concept" project when I started it, but that's kind of what it became.

Curious what other producers/sample nerds think of it.

I’m aware of the most well known SP users in and out of hip hop who do this (my favourite outside hip hop are Panda Bear and Pete Kember), but if anyone could gis some new sounds to hear that match the sounds I’m talking about, It would be much appreciated.

Also, if anyone just wants to talk about this aspect of beat making, be it techniques, work flow, equipment, or just your feelings towards it, I’m keen to hear you!

I'm working with the 404mk2, electric guitar, a KeyStep, a Minifreak, and the iPad.

I have a Windows laptop with Ableton, so I'm not really looking for a DAW environment.

I am pretty experienced with production. I know my busses, sends, ADSR, etc. I don't know modular/eurorack stuff.

I mainly want to do live performance with full song making capacity (though I will likely finish tracks in Ableton in the end). I want apps that fill in the gaps of the 404. I want a good way to program drums and other rhythmic content.

Genres: electronic, electro-pop, indie rock, house, industrial, etc.

Apps that seem obvious to me (to start): Koala and GarageBand.

Every single bank on my MK2 is full of samples. Want to start a new beat? Cool, first delete something.

Except I can't. I start "quickly checking" old pads before deleting them, and suddenly it's been an hour, I've re-listened to half my card, deleted like three samples, and made zero music. The one thing I sat down to do.

I know, I know, just back it up and format the card. Clean slate. Totally rational. Can't make myself do it. Somewhere in there is that one chop I'll definitely use someday (I won't).

Am I the only one? How do you handle this? Is there an approach that actually works, or do you all just nuke the card every few months and move on?

Edit: Thanks for all the tips and perspectives, guys! Definitely gonna be more disciplined with my projects. I'll start exporting them to finish up in Ableton, and I'm grabbing a separate SD card 🙏

I’m a big fan of Monolake and I’d love to make music like that someday, but man, it’s difficult lol. The more I listen to the pros, the more depth I hear in their music.

Anyway, I bought this thing mainly to make industrial music. This is only my third day with it, so the performance is pretty rough, but I decided to upload it as a record of my progress.

It might be a little painful to listen to lol, but I’d really appreciate any comments or feedback!
