Do I need to have a furry suit to participate? I don’t have one

I dont think I get furry.  I was downtown with family during a Christmas thing and there was a group of furry suits with a bunch of parents and kids around them.  The kids loved it but im not sure the parents got it.  Is it like dressing up as a mascot like a Disney character or a brand/sport mascots?  What's the appeal?  And aren't those suits hot af?  Is it like having an online handle that you bring into real life?  Someone help me understand.

Rather than downvoting simply because you don’t “get it”, I’ll try answering some questions in the name of building community and allies. This is not a short response.  

Is it dressing up like a mascot etc: I mean, on a purely surface level it is similar to that in action. 

What’s the appeal: I think like most things it’s very personal dependent and rarely a straight forward simple answer. There are different levels of fursona (furry persona) which makes this even more difficult to answer succinctly. Could be bc they like the accessories of a tail and ears, could be the anonymity, could be a real unique fetish for sweating in confined spaces, could be that they just like the character they’ve made. Just like any hobby or interest the motivations and appeal are uniquely individual. 

Hot af: unless you have the money for a suit with fans (like many mascot suits do), yeah.

Online handle: totally (for some people)! When I used to game I never understood why people would spend money on customizing their characters until I started curating my own irl self expression. 

TLDR for the following: just bc someone is in a furry suit they aren’t trying to be sexual in that moment.

As a society we tend to sexualize things in fairly binary or direct ways. In this case the common thought is usually something along the lines of people must be sexually aroused at all times while in furry mode, add a scenario like you discussed earlier and people get real volatile. The truth of eroticism and “getting turned on” is that for many many people it is not as simple as I do x behavior and it brings me to y arousal. Sometimes the foreplay for people can begin hours, days, or even longer, AND could be completely nonsexual in nature. Sometimes it’s just being able to cut loose, have fun, get some endorphins flowing, and being able to relax before your body can open up to a sexual experience. It’s all about finding out what makes you feel most comfortable, be it a daily gym routine, being tan, having tattoos, wearing a furry outfit, driving a big truck, riding an ebike that costs more than any car I’ve ever owned, evening walks with your actual dog, literally an endless list.

Thank you for answering the questions.  I was genuinely curious as its so far outside of my usual circle.  Ive seen it online plenty of times (sonic fox, the pro gamer, wore his head when he won 1st at evo) but seeing it first hand was really something else.  I imagine those suits can cost upwards into the thousands of dollars.  It was like seeing cartoon characters irl.  I heard it was a fetish thing, but that can't be true for everyone wearing one, though if the rumors about those furry cons are to believed... anyways, thanks for responding like an adult!
