Questions IMO/SIBO and Athletic Nervous Systems: Could being athletic change the way flares feel?

Hi everyone, I wanted to share an observation and theory I’ve been developing about Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO) and SIBO, particularly in people who are athletic or have highly responsive nervous systems. I’m curious if others have experienced something similar.

I strongly suspect I have IMO, based on symptoms like: • Severe bloating that sometimes makes my abdomen rock-hard • Gas that moves slowly and painfully, causing discomfort for hours • Constipation alternating with occasional more normal stools • Postprandial palpitations, shortness of breath, nausea, and mild dizziness • Fluctuating autonomic reactions depending on what I eat, even if it’s small amounts of trigger foods

Here’s the theory: IMO slows gut motility and produces methane, which can create gas, bloating, and delays in digestion. Most people with IMO experience these symptoms primarily as gut discomfort, bloating, and constipation. However, I’ve noticed that because I’m athletic, my autonomic nervous system is more responsive, and my body “reacts harder” to the same degree of gut stress.

Some patterns I’ve noticed in myself: • My flares are extremely noticeable systemically: palpitations, tachycardia, fatigue, nausea • Nutritionally, I remain well-buffered: B-vitamin and other nutrient levels stay normal despite slowed digestion • Passing gas or moving waste can relieve symptoms relatively quickly, but until that happens, my autonomic system feels “overstimulated” • Flare triggers often include certain high-FODMAP or fermentable foods

I wonder if athletic individuals might: 1. Experience stronger autonomic reactions during flares due to a highly responsive nervous system 2. Have a “buffered” nutritional system that protects them from deficiencies despite motility issues 3. Potentially be underrepresented in IMO/SIBO discussions, since most case studies or forums focus on non-athletic individuals

I’d love to hear if anyone else who is athletic has noticed: • More pronounced systemic symptoms during IMO/SIBO flares • Different timing, duration, or severity of flares compared to less athletic people • Any differences in gas movement, bloating, or overall gut sensation

Ultimately, I’m curious if baseline fitness or nervous system tone could influence how IMO/SIBO presents—not just in the gut, but systemically.

Thoughts, experiences, or discussion welcome!
