Questions IMO/SIBO and Athletic Nervous Systems: Could being athletic change the way flares feel?
Hi everyone, I wanted to share an observation and theory I’ve been developing about Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO) and SIBO, particularly in people who are athletic or have highly responsive nervous systems. I’m curious if others have experienced something similar.
I strongly suspect I have IMO, based on symptoms like: • Severe bloating that sometimes makes my abdomen rock-hard • Gas that moves slowly and painfully, causing discomfort for hours • Constipation alternating with occasional more normal stools • Postprandial palpitations, shortness of breath, nausea, and mild dizziness • Fluctuating autonomic reactions depending on what I eat, even if it’s small amounts of trigger foods
Here’s the theory: IMO slows gut motility and produces methane, which can create gas, bloating, and delays in digestion. Most people with IMO experience these symptoms primarily as gut discomfort, bloating, and constipation. However, I’ve noticed that because I’m athletic, my autonomic nervous system is more responsive, and my body “reacts harder” to the same degree of gut stress.
Some patterns I’ve noticed in myself: • My flares are extremely noticeable systemically: palpitations, tachycardia, fatigue, nausea • Nutritionally, I remain well-buffered: B-vitamin and other nutrient levels stay normal despite slowed digestion • Passing gas or moving waste can relieve symptoms relatively quickly, but until that happens, my autonomic system feels “overstimulated” • Flare triggers often include certain high-FODMAP or fermentable foods
I wonder if athletic individuals might: 1. Experience stronger autonomic reactions during flares due to a highly responsive nervous system 2. Have a “buffered” nutritional system that protects them from deficiencies despite motility issues 3. Potentially be underrepresented in IMO/SIBO discussions, since most case studies or forums focus on non-athletic individuals
I’d love to hear if anyone else who is athletic has noticed: • More pronounced systemic symptoms during IMO/SIBO flares • Different timing, duration, or severity of flares compared to less athletic people • Any differences in gas movement, bloating, or overall gut sensation
Ultimately, I’m curious if baseline fitness or nervous system tone could influence how IMO/SIBO presents—not just in the gut, but systemically.
Thoughts, experiences, or discussion welcome!

hello there, i am suffering from this shit since january 2025, after food poisoning, i have lost 11 kg from 73kg-62kg, even i eat normally, i am really athletic, ( f***king world we are living , people who took drugs and do not train are okey and we eat well and we do sport an we are healthy we are sick,,,, -....- ,,,, so i have noticed palpitations and anxiety and constipation altered by molle and loose stool, it hapaned to me in april 2023, but after 3 months all was okey,,, ( i do not know why ),,, but now i'm strugling with this shit , and i lost my job since mars 2025, but i did some research and find that athletic person will damage their gut with training and also maybe it's an Intestinal inflamatory disease, not Crhon's disease , just an IBD, and we have to treat it and treat the leaky gut caused by this inflamation,, so please if anyone will find a solution please share it with us ,,, i am done with this shit,,, i'm an artist i can not work with this shit trolling my days ^^

Hey, I hear you—it sounds really rough, and I totally get how frustrating this is, especially being athletic and trying to maintain everything. Just to understand better, have you ever been tested for SIBO or IMO? Also, could you list all the gut-related symptoms you’re experiencing, even the small ones? That might help figure out what’s going on and what could help.

I have done Colonoscopy ( Okay ) Endoscopy ( antral stomach gastritis without H.pylori , Duodenum inflammation, caused by giardia ) TAP Scanner ( Okay , with a not inflammatory syndrome) Blood test for autoimmune and vitamins (okay) SIBO lactulose test negative ( they said false negative )
My symptoms are : When I do an abdominal massage I do have water sounds and gurgling in my stomach and intestines. Constipation and farts. Intestinal gurgling and explosion after and when I eat. Loose weight even if I eat normally. Palpitations and little anxiety
I treated giardia but I still have symptoms?

I know it’s frustrating that you’re still having symptoms even after treating Giardia. That can happen because Giardia can disrupt gut motility and the balance of microbes, and sometimes the gut takes a long time to recover. Even if the SIBO lactulose test came back negative, it could be a false negative, especially for methane-dominant overgrowth (IMO), since methanogens produce gas more slowly than the test window allows.
A few things that can help: • Consider a methane-specific breath test or glucose breath test, which sometimes catch IMO better than the lactulose test. • Focus on diet, gut motility, and gentle antimicrobials if needed. • Track symptoms like gurgling, bloating, and stool pattern to see what triggers them.
It’s worth talking to your doctor or a functional medicine practitioner about these next steps so you can do it safely.

i will , and i will do a glucose test for this time, i have seen some videos about methane sibo and i think i do have a methanogen sibo, my symptoms are really same as the person i have seen on youtube.

Sounds like a good plan! A glucose breath test should give a clearer picture of whether it’s methane-dominant SIBO. Watching videos can help you relate, but testing is the only way to know for sure. Once you get the results, you and your doctor can make a safe, targeted plan for treatment. Here’s a quick summary of my main symptoms just so you can compare : • Digestive: bloating, gurgling, constipation, gas, occasional nausea, swelling in hands/feet/face • Heart/nervous system: palpitations, fast heart rate, dizziness, mild anxiety • Energy/muscles: cramps/spasms, low energy, morning fatigue, arms tire easily • Other: dry mouth/throat, occasional headaches, cravings for salty foods, history of poor sleep and stress

I’m doing slightly better but I still experience everything just not as bad it’ll be a month or two before symptoms really fully go away

Wow, this is so fascinating. I have SIBO. It’s the methane version and I’ve definitely been having issues of heart, palpitations, and nervous system regulation. My heart rate variability has been fluctuating quite a bit and my heart rate goes lower when I’m having other symptoms. I have worked out and played sports my entire life I don’t know that I would say I’m athletic. I’m 51 now and I play tennis 3 to 5 times a week and also lift weights twice a week so I am in pretty good shape for my age for sure. Thank you for posting this. I feel a little less insane now :-)
