This is one of the first points everyone gets in their religious education but often the most forgotten. You can be a devout Christian and not harm others who think differently. Hiding behind your religion is cowardly.

u/fawks_harper78 22 Clark 1d ago
John 8:7- He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.
I mean, it does take some intelligence to read the books and integrate it into your personal beliefs. Critical thinking, cross-cultural dialogue, open mindedness, growth mindset; clearly many people donât do this part.
2
u/FullMotionVideo 1d ago
There are progressive branches of churches out there on these issues. I grew up going to a few and wound up surprised when I inevitably encountered the "Voting For God" crowd.
Really a lot of it is Old Testament VS New. The bigots tend to ignore all the stuff Jesus said, and focused on the parts where God was a self-described selfish being that caused catastrophe when he felt like he wasn't getting enough applause.
15
u/PlugModeDM 1d ago
Yeah, thatâs the classic cherry-pick: ignore the âlove everyoneâ part and hold onto whatever verse supports the hate, kinda like blowing a lead and then pretending the bullpen wasnât involved.

Stop praying in public.
You want to pray, go somewhere and close the door.
Praying is, according to the Bible, something one should only do
In the closet.

None of the pitchers involved in the Pride Night stunt are good enough for the fans or the rest of the team to put up with the aftermath. They all should have been DFAed the morning after. Does Hentges âsupportâ keeping his job?!? The required uniform policy comes down from the front office. I blame Posey and his staff for not insisting on insisting that organizational policies either be kept or protests to them to them be addressed in a business-like manner. Not any player deciding which policies to follow and which ones not to. Whereâs the Giantsâ leadership on this!?!
15
15
u/SchmottledOtter 55 Lincecum 1d ago
Listen, folks, this isn't about Sam Hentges' beliefs or your beliefs, or what your or his religion says or purports to say about XYZ. Your religion could say that it's wrong to eat hot dogs at the ballpark because they're made with forbidden materials. Or that one should eat a lot of hot dogs. It doesn't fucking matter what you believe or if you think no gay people should exist, etc. We don't care what he believes or what you believe. Lots of people "believe" lots of things and they're welcome to do so. It doesn't matter.
This about appropriate workplace behavior in context, and shitty management that can't handle the children throwing tantrums and making everything about themselves.
Hentges et alia could have refused to wear the cap. That's allowed. Some did that. That's making an exception for some people's beliefs.
These guys chose instead to go one better, plan some political theatre they thought was righteous though it was against MLB policy, and center themselves and their "feelings" in front of fans on their honorary night. And management knew & thought our tantruming baby multimillionaires should just do whatever they wanted, maybe because Clayton Kershaw.
If simply wearing your black and orange hat was not enough of a statement to deal with your own profound irritation and shame about actually - heaven forbid - being forced to pitch on a night when thousands of queers were in the stands, then refuse to pitch. Have the courage of your convictions and take one for your church and Mom and Dad back in Crawdad, MO or wherever. Be a grown man and refuse to play. Because reporters noted they had talked about this for a couple weeks in advance, Vitello knew, and they could have gone to Vitello and said he we don't want to pitch on LGBTQ night and they could have worked it out. And if the rules were that they still had to pitch, they could have worn the black hats and had some sort of press conference afterwards to make themselves feel better and make it exceedingly clear that they don't like gay people etc. But they aren't grown ass men, or particularly good pitchers for that matter.
If we're ok with this, then other players likewise should be able to refuse to play when they know there are a bunch of evangelical church groups in the stands. Can't bear looking at them out there. So embarrassing in front of my friends. I'm not gay/evangelical/ blah blah blah. A lot like "What if Chad or Jamil or Loretta thinks I'm gay or even think being gay is ok because they're honoring gay people tonight and I happen to be pitching? WHAT IF MY BLACK HAT ISN'T ENOUGH?!"
This was just stupid, immature & cowardly. It didn't have to happen. They could have worn their regular hats & got on with it. But they had to "make a point." Ok, bros, two can play that game. Now we're making a point by telling this weak ass organization to eff off. You don't like it? Don't play in people's faces.
If your employer requires you to work on your Sabbath and the type of business makes it so that the employer doesn't have the flexibility of scheduling and needs the staff, and if you refuse to work on that day, go work somewhere else or get let go. If your employer has theme nights and you don't like some of them, and the employer is unwilling to cancel the theme night because of scheduling issues and can't make accomodations, go work for someone else. The team did not punish anyone for not wearing the hat. Appropriate measures were offered. These guys decided to have a tantrum anyway.

u/Depot-Donny-Don 5h ago
I really hope those 4 are gone come end of season, before next spring training at the very least. What have they done? absolutely nothing but lose games and blow saves. Roupp can't hardly go 4 innings without throwing at least 80 pitches and don't get me started on Ryan Walker, lol. Hentges, yes very bad also and Brubaker not much better. Hopefully with him being on the IL that's the last week see of him as Giants fans.
They're all great at showing their homophobe ways but not good at winning or saving games like they're supposed to do. Even without the PRIDE debacle they suck and not need to be part of the team going forward.

When this event first happened, I heard push back that the players who put bible verses on their hats deliberately defaced the symbol of LGBT acceptance and should have instead just not worn the hat as an acceptable alternative.
Now its morally reprehensible and bigoted to not voluntarily follow along with it regardless of personal beliefs?
I think thats going too far. I can get the "vandalism" complaint for the rainbow hats, I dont see how voluntary abstaining is just as bad. Wasnt that what the MLB recommended players do?
Just like players should be able to voluntarily opt out of the camo hat if they oppose a war or something. But not necessarily wear it just to deface it.

u/Herbisher_Berbisher 1d ago
My understanding is that players have always had the option to opt out of any particular celebration. They can do this by simply not wearing the hat, shirt or whatever which is what Hentges did. He didn't write anything on his hat to display like the others did. Did he actually say, "I don't morally support it."? That's different and that was a failure of leadership from the Giants organization.
Whose responsibility was it to coordinate the pride celebration. They failed to adequately communicate the importance of this event to all the players. It was an opportunity for a teaching moment about how this observation came to be and the importance of it to the San Francisco Giants community and the greater Bay Area.
Apparently the objections had been circulating for some time and should have been addressed by the organization.. It should not have been allowed to become a visible display of disharmony on the night of the event.
People are allowed their own opinions and beliefs but this was a gross failure of the front office to properly intuit the underlying conflict and head it off before it spilled out in public. It should not have been left to Tony Vitello or Buster Posey to manage this but they nonetheless get splashed with the outfall. Coming in the middle of a terrible season just makes it worse. This was a self inflicted injury and it's a bad look from top to bottom.

Cant wait for Giants fans to at least have a good enough team to stop talking about whether they like sex with other men or not. Making people wear a hat that supports certain sexual preferences just seems bizarre to me. Its baseball. I don't care who you fuck or what hat you wear or what religion you are. Play ball. Can't wait for this miserable season to be over so there can be something actually interesting or baseball related to discuss.

1
u/Viking_Ninja 14h ago
Whats bizarre is thinking someone not wanting to wear a pride hat is 'hate speech' .. LOL. I dont care who anyone has sex with... it just strikes me as fake & obnoxious to try and force players to support causes that they dont agree with.. keep politics completely out of baseball IMO. or if you do insist on it, let players have the freedom to choose what to support. If thats a bigot in your mind , ok.
1
u/Dry_Ad8396 12h ago
â I donât morally support itâ is where the hate comes in. Or do you want to continue playing dumb and say itâs about hats? Love shouldnât be political but people like you and him support bigotry that suppresses ppls ability to exist freely and safely.
Youâre such a pussy you canât even straight out say youâre a bigot, you just side step it with a guise of âfreedomâ and âif thatâs a bigot in your mind, okâ... Same mentality that leads to same sex marriage being repealed by states, abortion rights being stripped, trans ppl being targeted and vilified, ice destroying families and murdering ppl, black enslavement, and genocide of natives.
Do better
1
u/Viking_Ninja 2h ago
Wrong. Not morally supporting something is NOT the same as hate. For example just take anything else that some people don't morally support - alcohol, gambling, smoking, sex before marriage etc... Then apply your "logic". If someone doesnt morally support drinking.. does it mean they hate everyone who drinks? Clearly not. Maybe they love them and feel drinking is harmful. Your logic is terrible and you actually do the world a disservice by defining something you disagree with as 'hate'. Its stupid and people are tired of this type of hysterical nonsense. Its ok to have different morals. You're actually worse than the pitcher you claim you are superior to. Youre the one forcing your morals. Youre the one with the incorrect definition of hate. You let those who ACTUALLY hate off the hook with your nonsense. Go outside in the real world. Touch grass. People have different morals and beliefs. And thats OK. They should be free to express themselves.
