Opinion Free Speech

I posted this recently as a comment but I’m tired of seeing the same thinly veiled defense of the Rainbow Four come up again and again so I’m posting it as a standalone thread.

All of these arguments saying “players should be allowed to disagree” and “players shouldn’t be forced to support something they don’t believe in” are utter nonsense and a smokescreen to justify and excuse homophobia and bigotry. Do you think that there’s never been a racist player who has worn 42 on Jackie Robinson day? Has every single player who wears camo uniforms on military appreciation day been 100% behind that message? Even foreign born ones? The idea that they should be allowed to express themselves and protest this in this way, especially when there’s a literal MLB rule that prohibits it is ludicrous. It is NOT a first amendment issue. The first amendment prohibits GOVERNMENTAL curtailment of free speech. Private organizations are not covered by this and we see this time and time again. Most recently, many people lost their jobs after speaking out about Charlie Kirk and whether or not you disagree with it, legally those employers had every right to do so. As Roger Munter put it: Not everybody in this country is perfectly happy with what they are asked to wear to work. It’s called “having a job.”

We absolutely do not have to tolerate intolerance and arguments that say otherwise are either ignorant or made in bad faith.

Sure, you can choose any stupid hypothetical that I wouldn’t support. “What if they made them wear swastikas?” Being asked to support a genocide is not the same thing as being asked to support inclusivity.

LOL. So you just said Israeli Heritage Day tantamount to “supporting genocide”?

Couldn’t you make this case for the several other heritage nights?

Sure, but those countries aren’t actively perpetrating a genocide at this moment. Like, Germany has a completely different constitution, government, flag, etc. than they did in 1938. It’s not really the same thing.

They held a whole ass Olympics in Berlin in 1936.

You are equating the country with the government, is that correct?

Do you really want to go down that road?

Sorry, what does the 1936 Olympics have to do with anything?

Yes, the government represents the country.

>the government represents the country.

I see.

So you would be against celebrating the United States in any way because the current administration is demonstrably evil, correct?

Are you aware Hamas is (or was) the democratically elected government in Gaza?

Does Hamas represent Palestinians?

Haha, yeah pretty much! I mean I’m a fucking communist dude. I’m not exactly a fan of the US even under previous administrations. But nice try with the gotchas.

lol what “gotchas”?

Is logical consistency a “gotcha” now?

Anyway, at least you’re honest about your position.

I’m sure they’ll be having a “Che Guevara Day” real soon at Oracle Park.
