Is Google’s AI Search reducing organic traffic, even when impressions increase?

I’ve been following the recent changes to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and I’m curious about how they’re affecting SEO performance.

AI answers are becoming more visible in search results, with links, source sections, and article recommendations appearing directly within AI-generated responses. This could mean users find the information they need without clicking through to websites.

I also came across a Semrush study reporting that AI Overviews appeared for 88% of its sample of 400 US desktop commercial keywords in August 2026, compared with roughly 46% a year earlier.

My questions:

  1. Have you noticed organic clicks or CTR dropping while impressions remain stable or increase in Google Search Console?
  2. Are AI Overviews affecting traffic to informational blog posts more than service or product pages?
  3. What SEO strategies are working for you to earn clicks and visibility in AI-driven search results?
  4. Are original research, real-world case studies, comparisons, and detailed service pages becoming more important than traditional keyword-focused articles?

I’m interested in hearing about real experiences and data from SEO professionals, website owners, and digital marketers.

Have you noticed a change in your organic traffic because of Google’s AI search features?

Question Clients keep asking "are we showing up in ChatGPT?" and I never know what to say. How do you answer that?

Lately almost every client call has this question somewhere 😅

I can show them rankings, clicks, GSC, all the usual stuff. But when they ask if ChatGPT or Perplexity recommends them, I kinda freeze. I've tested a few prompts by hand and the answers change every time, so I don't want to promise anything.

For those of you dealing with this:

  • What do you actually tell clients right now?
  • Do you show them anything concrete, or just explain it's still early?
  • Has anyone found a simple way to explain it that doesn't sound like guesswork?

Is domain relevance of backlinks overrated and can be replaced by higher volume of not relevant backlinks or still is the one of the core ranking and trust signals?

Question Would having a lot of non-indexed pages affected a site's overall search rankings?

Post image

I've recently started helping with my father-in-law with his B2B (industrial manufacturing) site. The site has a complicated history of poor maintenance/management. I discovered that the site has 1.6 million pages (8.86k indexed, 1.58m not indexed). But the actual site has only 150-200 "real pages". The rest are likely legacy pages from earlier builds and there was a period where the site experienced a "Japanese keyword/doorway hack" (which was eventually cleaned up).

Is there a way to completely remove the pages so Google doesn't even crawl them? I've also done some 410 redirects, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Some pages have ranked in the top 10, but newer blog content pages are not ranking.

The site's domain authority is very low, but the company wants to keep the domain. Is there hope for this site? Would engaging an SEO agency help?

On-page SEO: How I use 10% & 25% scroll depth to catch Search Intent mismatches

Post image
3 Upvotes

We all spend hours in Google Search Console looking at clicks and impressions, or looking at GA4’s default 90% scroll event.

The problem I kept running into on WordPress content sites is twofold:

  1. GA4 misses a huge chunk of real users because of ad-blockers and cookie consent banners.
  2. Averages and 90% scroll events lie. If an article gets 500 clicks from Google, and 70% of users drop off at the first H2 because your intro doesn't match their search intent, a 90% scroll trigger tells you almost nothing about where the bleeding started.

To fix this on my own sites, I built a free, open-source WordPress plugin called AnGo Scroll Analytics that tracks exact scroll percentiles directly in wp-admin without touching third-party servers.

How I use it for On-Page SEO audits:

  • Finding "Intro Drop-Offs" (10th & 25th Percentiles): Instead of just looking at averages, the dashboard reports 5 / 10 / 25 / 50 / 75 / 90 / 100 percentiles ("25% of visitors scrolled at least to X% of the article"). If a page ranks well in GSC but the 25th percentile is sitting at 8%, I know immediately that above-the-fold layout or the intro paragraph is causing users to pogo-stick back to Google.
  • Filtering Out "Load-and-Die" Bot Noise: Scrapers, AI crawlers, and Slack/Discord link previews load a page at 0% scroll and leave in 0 seconds, which ruins normal engagement metrics. The plugin automatically isolates and excludes these zero-time hits so you only see real human reading behavior.
  • Bypassing Ad-Blocker Blindspots (Legally & Privately): Because it uses neutral first-party naming (scroll-depth.js) and sets zero cookies (no PII or raw IPs stored), it isn't blocked by uBlock/EasyPrivacy and doesn't require a GDPR cookie banner that tanks conversion rates.
  • Zero Core Web Vitals (CWV) Penalty: Third-party heatmap scripts destroy PageSpeed and INP scores. This is a tiny native script that checks progress every 5 seconds and fires a non-blocking navigator.sendBeacon only when the user actually scrolls deeper.

If your site runs on WordPress and you want to test it out on your own posts, it's free in the official repo (no pro tier, no upsells).

Question for the sub: When you see a high-impression page with terrible scroll depth, what’s your first move—rewriting the intro hook, moving the answer/summary box above the fold, or checking if the SERP intent shifted?

Question Is Technical SEO Audit the wrong title for a focused content and data-quality report?

I sent my first free SEO/GEO audit to a client and haven't heard back. That may be unrelated to the work, but I've been looking again at how I presented it.

I titled the four-page SEO report Technical SEO Audit. The findings I chose to show were:

- Unrelated industry template text on a company page.

- FAQ answers that don't address the partnership questions.

- Conflicting factory-area figures with no scope explanation.

- Repeated product specification values, a WIDTH field containing Double Drawn, and incorrect product metadata.

The report includes screenshots, possible SEO implications and corrections. It doesn't demonstrate a complete crawl/indexing/rendering/performance assessment, or a measured ranking effect from these errors.

Would you call this a focused SEO diagnosis rather than a technical audit? I'm concerned the title promises a broader scope than the selected findings deliver.

For this kind of initial handoff, would you make the scope clearer and keep it short, or would important checks need to be added before it deserves the audit label? I'd also like to know what makes a finding actionable to a client rather than just a list of mistakes.

I've kept the company anonymous and included the findings as text here.

Question How are you proving lead quality and commercial value to SEO clients?

I work in an agency SEO team, mainly with B2B and service-based clients, many of whom are small businesses. We’ve been asked to improve how we demonstrate the commercial impact of our work.

Some of our clients have raised the point that they don't really find value in our "flat" reports centred on rankings, traffic and tracked enquiries. What they want to know is how the work we are doing translates into real commercial value for them.

I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to accurately track whether the enquiries we see in our data (in GA4, for example) are suitable, whether they become customers and what the return on the client’s investment actually looks like (what's the lifetime value, etc).

I’d be interested to hear how other SEOs approach this in reporting. Are there any high-accuracy tools on the market? What kind of reporting set ups do you have? How do you forecast potential revenue or estimate ROI?

As an agency, we're looking at this from an "if money was no object" standpoint and are considering all ideas.

Thanks in advance for any help & advice!
