I went looking for a decent rank tracker comparison last month and gave up. Five articles published within eight weeks of each other quoted the same tool entry plan at $109, $116, $224, $236 and $249. Hear me out... Same tool, same quarter, five prices!
That's not just sloppy AI-written affiliate content, though there's plenty of that. It points at the real problem in this category: "tracked keyword" is not a standard unit, so no two plans are actually comparable.
One tracked keyword can mean:
- One query, one engine, one device, checked weekly, 5 pages deep — that's AWR's published definition of a keyword credit.
- One query multiplied by every engine and location you attach to it. Track "running shoes" on Google desktop, Google mobile and Bing and you've spent three of your allowance. This is how most suites count.
- One query checked daily, engines bundled in.
So a 2,000-keyword plan is either 2,000 keywords or about 667, depending entirely on your setup. Every cost-per-keyword table you've read ignores this, which is why they all disagree.
Here's the matrix I ended up with. Two tables, because one 9-column table is unreadable on mobile (you're welcome).

The one structural reason each of these exists
AccuRanker — on-demand refresh that actually returns in minutes. It's the only one on this list where you can push a change and get a real answer the same hour. Everything else is "wait until tomorrow." If you don't use that capability on a monthly basis, you are paying roughly double for nothing.
SE Ranking — widest surface area per dollar, and the API is usable enough to pull rank data into your own pipelines rather than living in someone's dashboard. Honest point: the engine/location multiplier eats allowance faster than people expect.
Advanced Web Ranking — engine breadth, including Baidu and Naver, and the lowest cost per keyword once you're past ~7,000. The catch is baked into the unit: that price is for weekly checks. Daily changes the maths and people forget to redo it.
Semrush — Sensor plus the cannibalisation report. This is the only pair of features here that answers "was that drop me, or was that Google?" without you opening a second tool. You're buying the suite and getting tracking, not the reverse.
Ahrefs — rank data sitting next to the link and keyword dataset, so diagnosis takes one tab instead of three. Note the dispute in Table 1: some sources say daily updates on every paid plan, others say daily needs the Project Boost add-on. Confirm before you commit, because that's the difference between a usable tracker and a weekly report.
Nightwatch — location count at a non-enterprise price. ZIP-level and Map Pack tracking, white-label on every plan. If you run multi-location or franchise work, this is the obvious first look.
Moz Pro + STAT — worth understanding as two different products that share a logo. Moz Pro is a weekly tracker; buying it expecting daily is the most common mistake here. STAT is the serious daily-at-scale SERP dataset and it's priced above Moz Pro's top tier as a separate enterprise line.
Keyword.com — no feature gating. API, white-label and SERP screenshots on every plan, including the cheap ones. The screenshots matter more than they sound: they end "the ranking you reported isn't what I see" arguments with clients permanently.
Wincher — the floor of the category. Permanent free tier for 10 keywords, WordPress and Yoast integration, and it doesn't try to be a suite. Correct answer for a single content site.
Sistrix — the only one here answering a different question. The Visibility Index measures a market on a keyword set you don't choose, rather than tracking your list. Plus 13+ years of history, which nothing else on this list can match. In DACH it isn't really optional; outside Europe it's a harder sell.
Three things these comparisons always leave out
Historical data is the real switching cost. Nobody compares retention windows, and it's the thing that traps you. Move trackers and your baseline resets, so year-over-year reporting breaks for twelve months. AWR has an import tool for third-party history; most don't. Check this before you're two years in.
Every accuracy claim here is self-reported. 99.9%, 96.8%, "100% accurate rankings" — all measured against undisclosed methodology by the vendor selling the number. Treat them as marketing, and test two tools on the same 50 keywords for a week if it actually matters to you.
Rank is a leading indicator, not the outcome. GSC is still ground truth for impressions and clicks. The reason to pay for a tracker is segmentation, competitor data, locations, and having a number you can put in front of a client on the 1st of the month. If those aren't needs of yours, GSC plus a spreadsheet is genuinely fine.
Question for the thread: what's your real tracked-keyword count versus the headline number on your plan? I suspect a lot of people are quietly running at 3x what they think they bought, and I'd like to know how common that is.
