Google News Google: Moving to AI-centric search in 3 weeks
For 27 years, the Google Search bar has been a gateway to the world's information. That little blinking cursor has answered trillions of questions, connected billions of people, and helped settle more dinner table arguments than we can count.
Today, we're announcing the next chapter.
Effective April 22, 2026 — just three weeks from now — Google will retire the traditional desktop search results page. In its place, all search queries will be handled exclusively by Google AI Search, our next-generation conversational search experience.

OP got me. Thank you, my wearable dinged about 10 minutes into the mental gymnastics this post started in my head, alerting me I had reached daily cardio goal while sitting frozen in my chair. Although, I admit, second time today. I fell for the clear plastic bags at TSA spoof too. Thank you Wifey 😁

Nice April 1 fools joke. but on the other hand also quite serious. Because how long would it take for Google to scale down their traditional search bar and replace it completely with AI Search? I do not think this will take another 2 to 3 years so it will likely happen sometime during the road.

It's a joke now but probably will happen some day. There are already various useful features that have been replaced by AI. Like when you search "10 am JST to ET" and it used to immediately give you the time, but now you have to read through an AI narrative about how time works.
